본고(本稿)의 목적은 한국사회에서 발생하는 이타적 집단행동을 공동체의 자기목적적 행동 경험으로 재해석하는 데 있다. 기존 연구에서 집단행동은 인간 이기성, 냄비성향, 우연과 기적 등으로 해석됐다. 그러나 외부 동기가 제한되어 있거나 자기희생을 요구하는 상황에서 촉발한 이타적 집단행동에 대한 적절한 설명이 부족하기에 새로운 관점이 요구된다. 이에 본고는 칙센트미하이의 몰입(flow)이론을 이용하여 외적 동기가 아닌 내적 동기에 기반을 둔 공동체 수준의 사회적 몰입모형을 제안한다. 사회적 몰입모형에서는 몰입의 두 축인 도전과 기술을 대신하여 사회문제에 대한 공동체의 위험 인식과 자원의 총합으로 치환했고, 이 과정에서 이타적 집단행동의 동인을 새롭게 규정하고자 했다. 2008년 태안에서 일어난 대규모 자원봉사활동을 활용하여 본 연구에서 제시한 모형을 증명하려고 시도했다. 본고는 새로운 이론의 관점에서 이타적 집단행동을 유발한 다양한 자원의 분석, 자원 간의 연계, 그리고 언론과 자원의 상호관련성을 도출했다. 태안 자원봉사활동은 우연과 기적이 아닌 공동체가 문제해결에 필요자원을 규합하여 성공시킨 공동체 수준의 사회적 몰입으로 고려되었다. 연구결과는 이타적 집단행동을 사회적 가치로 재인식하게 해줌으로써 우리 인식의 지평을 확대하고 풍요롭게 해주는 의의를 지닌다.
This study aims to reinterpret altruistic collective action in Korean society as autotelic experience of community. Prior research regards a collective action as selfishness of human nature, boiling pot syndrome, and coincidence or miracle. However, the studies showed difficulties in explaining altruistic collective action in the circumstances in which self-sacrifice in needed and external motivation is limited. Thus, the new model is required an alternative view for better understanding the action. This study develops the model of social flow in social community (MSFS) based on flow theory by csikszentmihalyi, focusing on an internal motivation. In the MSFS, the challenges and skills of flow theory have been translated into recognized severity of social problems and total resources in the society, respectively. Also, the model tries to understand various factors affecting a social flow in social community. This study tried to testify the MSFS using the case of Hebei Spirit’s oil spill in Taean. This study presents the results of analysis of various resources, relations between resources, and correlation between media news and resources. From this study, volunteer work in Teaan as of 2008 is regard as social flow in the level of social community at which people did successfully integrate various resources in our society. This study has implications for us in helping have new understanding of altruistic collective action as social value, as well as expand the horizon of perception.
