The purpose of this study is to explore the ambivalent responses of consumers to intelligent personal assistants (IPA), to identify the level of consumer ambivalence by type, and to investigate the effects of consumer ambivalence on the intention to accept IPA. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were integrated to achieve the research objectives. First, we conducted a 1:1 in-depth interview with 20 general consumers who had experience using IPA to qualitatively explore the types of consumer ambivalence, and conducted an online survey of 308 potential users of IPA. Data were analyzed by reliability test, descriptive analysis, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 24.0 program.
The main results of the study are as follows. Consumer ambivalence to IPA was classified into three dimensions. The first type is the ambivalence that the use of personal information provides the benefits of personalization, but at the same time the privacy risks increase. The second type is the ambivalence for the convenience of IPA to bring convenience but at the same time inconvenience. The third type is the ambivalence for an IPA to be friendly and fun, but at the same time feel stuffy and mechanically cold. As a result of analyzing the difference in the level of ambivalence according to demographic characteristics, the higher the woman, income, age, and education level, the higher the ambivalence of the use of personal information. In addition, women showed significantly higher emotional ambivalence than men. As a result of examining the effect of consumer ambivalence on the acceptance intention of IPA through multiple regression analysis, it was found that the ambivalence of using personal information had a significant positive effect on the acceptance intention, while the emotional ambivalence had a negative effect.
This study has academic value in that consumer ambivalence for innovative technologies such as IPA can occur at various dimensions and the impact on consumer behavior can be different for each type of ambivalence. The study also provides useful marketing implications for IPA practitioners.
