Latent class analysis (LCA) is intended to estimate categorical latent variables that explain the covariance between the indicator variables and to construct a measurement model based on the response of the indicator variables. Clusters can be estimated based on the different response patterns indicated by the respondents. LCA is not only used to classify the clusters but also enables secondary analysis using estimated clusters to search for the relationship with other variables or differences between clusters. However, in a commonly used 2-step approach, respondents are not allowed to be included in other clusters even though they possess various attributes. Therefore it has a limitation that it can not consider the classification error because it is assigned to only one cluster by excluding the probability of being included in another cluster. To overcome such limitations, this study compares the results of the 2-step approach and the 3-step approach using empirical data. The 3-step approach incorporates the classification error into the estimation of a parameter using auxiliary variables. As a result, the 3-step approach showed a higher level of validity in the comparison between clusters in the case of small samples. And there was no difference in the results between the 2-step approach and 3-step approach when there were a large number of samples.
