본 논문은 마가렛 앳우드의 소설 『시녀 이야기』를 만약 구약성서를 남성우월주의 적 시각에서 왜곡하여 섹스를 단지 수태 행위로 간주하고 여성을 자궁으로 물화시키는 전체주의적 신정국가(길리어드)에서 대리모 여성으로 살아간다면 어떨까에 대한 사고실험으로 읽고자 한다. 본 논문은 불임인 사령관 부부에게 배정되어 아기를 낳아주는 대리모 계급인 한 ‘시녀’의 내면적 독백으로 서술되고 있는 『시녀 이야기』에서 이루어지고 있는 여성의 몸에 대한 사고실험의 중요한 두 요소에 초점을 맞추겠다. 하나는 시녀의 언술의 외부를 차지하는 길리어드의 성/젠더 지배담론이고 다른 하나는 시녀의 의식의 내부를 차지하는, 과거의 사회에서 그녀가 경험했던 성적 자유, 감각, 친밀감, 욕망이다. 대량 불임을 초래한 대재앙 이후 세워진 길리어드는 인구 절감을 성해방을 포함하는 여성권의 신장에 기인하는 것으로 보고 생존과 체제 유지를 명분으로 전통적인 가부장제 여성상을 규범으로 부활시켜 여성의 몸을 인구 생산 및 증식을 위한 도구이자 원자재로 환원하고 여성에 대한 성적 착취를 정당화한다. 시녀는 성 노예와 다름없는 현재의 생활에서 철저하게 금지되어 있는 것들을 자유롭게 누렸던 과거의 기억을 소환하여 자신에 대한 이야기를 만들어냄으로써 이데올로기 교육과 처벌 제도 등을 통해 자신을 억압하고 훈육하려는 길리어드의 단일 서사에 저항한다. 감정, 느낌, 감각적 이미지로 이루어진 오브프레드의 이야기는 여성의 몸을 교감이 이루어지고 욕망이 발현되는 감성적 실천의 장으로 다시 쓰는 여성적 글쓰기로서 길리어드의 남근로고스중심적 지배담론에 저항하는 몸짓이다.
This paper reads Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1986) as a thought-experiment that speculates about what if fertile women have to live as surrogate mothers in a totalitarian theocratic state called Gilead that fetishizes women into the womb and permits sexual intercourse only if it serves procreation, which Gilead elevates as its national top priority to offset its plummeting population. This paper focuses on the two main interlocking strands of the first-person narrative of the novel whose narrator is a surrogate mother called Handmaid: Gilead’s dominant discourse on sex and gender reflective of the backlash in Reagan’s neoconservative era against the achievements of the second-wave feminist movement and the Handmaid’s memories about corporeal senses, feelings, desires, affects, and emotions that Gilead regards as waste and thus forbids women to have. The Handmaid is inscribed into the phallogocentric system of Gilead as no less than a sexual slave by ideological indoctrination, surveillance, and punishment; however, her memories struggle to resist this inscription. This paper examines the ways in which Gilead relegates woman and woman’s body into disposable bodies to be exploited in the name of sustaining the state in the aftermath of mass sterility. It also argues that the Handmaid’s narrative is a form of feminine writing that counters Gilead’s phallogocentric dominant discourse by reclaiming the woman’s body that feels, desires, loves, and communicates.
