(연구배경 및 목적) 한국의 정원과 원림은 선비들의 관념과 사상이 축적되어있는 장소로써, 우리의 정서에 깊게 관여되어 왔다. 그러나 정원과 원림에 대한 올바른 정의와 통일된 구분기준이 없으며, 국어사전에서 조차 서로 다르게 정의되어 있다. 각종 연구와 단행본에서도 같은 공간에 대하여 서로 다른 용어로 지칭하고 있는 실정이다. 모호한 정의와 그에 따른 용어의 혼용은 지난 수십 년간 계속되어 왔다. 공간에 대한 올바른 이해와 깊이 있는 감상을 위하여, 더욱 명확한 분류기준에 의한 공간의 구분이 필요하다. 또한 그에 따른 올바른 용어 사용이 요구된다. (연구방법) 정원과 원림에 대한 어휘적 정의를 비교해보는 것으로 시작한다. 서로 다른 의미에도 불구하고, 지난 30년간의 연구와 단행본에서 정원, 원림, 별서정원, 별서원림 등의 용어들이 무분별하게 혼용되어 사용되어져 왔음을 확인하였다. 이에 따라 정원과 원림이라는 공간이 각각 자연, 철학, 인간과 맺고 있는 관계를 분석 기준으로 하여 세부 구분 항목을 설정하였다. 또한 조선시대에 조성된 정원과 원림 중에서 12곳의 대상지를 선정하여 답사와 공간분석을 진행하였다. (결과) 정원과 원림은 그 건축적 입지 조건과 조성배경의 철학 그리고 사용 목적과 행태에 있어서 확연한 차이를 보여주고 있다. 정원은 주거 등의 주된 기능을 가진 공간과 함께 공존하면서, 휴식과 여가는 물론 사회적 접객의 기능을 가지며 일상적 여가 생활이 이루어진 공간이다. 반면, 원림은 자연 깊은 곳에 독립적으로 존재하면서 은둔 생활을 목적으로 하며, 비일상적 주거 생활이 이루어지는 공간이다. 이러한 특성의 차이는, 정원과 원림의 어휘적 의미의 구분에서부터 실존 대상지의 분석에서까지 일관적으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 정원과 원림을 구분하고 별도로 지칭할 수 있는 명확한 기준을 성립할 수 있었다. (결론) 정원과 원림이라는 각 공간은 자연, 철학, 인간과 가지는 관계에 있어서 확연한 차이를 보였다. 이는 실존 대상들을 분석하고 분류하는 과정에서 명확하게 드러났다. 본고에서 분석한 대상지들은 공통된 특성을 가진 두 그룹으로 명확히 나뉘어졌고 각각 정원과 원림에 해당하는 특성이 분석되었다. 이 특성들은 정원과 원림을 구분 지을 수 있는 명확한 기준이 될 수 있다. 이처럼 정원과 원림은 건축적 구조가 엄연히 다르며 서로 구분되어 연구되어야 하고, 별도로 불려지는 것이 타당하다.
(Background and Purpose) Korean gardens and wonlims are places where the scholastic thought and ideology accumulate, deeply penetrating our emotions. However, there is no correct definition and a uniform standard of distinction between these two terms. Even in Korean dictionaries, they have been defined differently. In various studies, different terms are used to denote the same space, and ambiguous definitions and mixed expressions have been used for decades. To have a proper understanding of the space and acquire deep appreciation, it is necessary to make distinction among spaces using a clearer classification standard. In addition, the terminology must be used properly. (Method) This study begins by comparing the lexical definitions of the terms garden and wonlim. Despite their different meaning, it was found that for 30 years, the terms garden, wonlim, beolseo garden, and beolseo wonlim have been used indiscriminately in various research and books. Subsequently, detailed categories were established based on the relationship between the spaces such as garden and wonlim, and nature, philosophy, and human beings. In addition, a total of 12 sites were selected from the gardens and forests created during the Joseon Dynasty, and research and spatial analysis were conducted. (Results) Gardens and wonlims show a marked difference in the architectural location, the philosophy of the context, and the purpose and behavior of use. The garden coexists with the main-function space such as dwelling, playing the role in relaxation and leisure, as well as social service, and it is a space where daily leisure life takes place. Wonlims, on the other hand, exist independently in the depths of nature, enabling secluded living, and are places where nondaily residential life takes place. This difference was consistent with the lexical meaning of garden and wonlim in the analysis of 12 sites. As a result, a clear standard could be established to distinguish between the terms and to refer to them separately. (Conclusions) Each space, the garden and the wonlim, shows a distinct difference in relation to nature, philosophy, and human beings. This was evident in the analysis and classification of the 12 existing sites. The sites analyzed in this paper were clearly divided into two groups based on common characteristics, and the characteristics corresponding to the garden and the wonlim were analyzed. Such characteristics represent a clear standard that can be used to distinguish between these two terms. Thus, the garden and the wonlim show distinct architectural structures, and therefore, they must be studied separately. In addition, it is appropriate to use different terms when referring to them.
