본문은 20세기 격동의 역사 속에서 교회의 공적 역할을 수행했던 두 인물, 마틴 니묄러와 오토 디벨리우스의 사상과 활동을 조명하고 있다. 교회정치가이자 목회자로서 두 인물은 동시대의 바르트나 본회퍼와 같이 탁월한 사상가로 거론되는 인물들은 아니다. 그러나 반세기에 걸친 독일 현대사의 시대적 도전 속에서 두 차례의 세계대전, 나치의 집권, 조국의 분단의 시기를 해쳐 나갔던 인물들로 자리매김하고 있다. 특히 두 인물은 저항정신의 산물인 고백교회를 탄생시킨 주역들이었으며, 종전 후 교회를 재건하고 분단 상황 하의 민족을 이끌었던 역사적 증인으로 자리매김하고 있다. 본문은 두 인물의 사상과 실천을 국가와 사회의 관계, 이상주의와 현실주의의 대립, 실천의 모색 속에서의 신학적 성찰과 같은 측면을 중심으로 살펴보고 있다. 이들은 특히 신학의 향방을 정함에 있어서 그리스도의 주권과 말씀의 신학을 앞세우고자 했으며, 실제의 역사는 하나님의 주관 하에 이루어진다는 사실을 증거 해내고자 했다. 이러한 도전에 대해 역사적-신학적으로 고찰하며 한국교회의 현실모색을 위한 반면교사를 찾고자 시도한다.

This study highlights the thoughts and activities of two figures, Martin Niemöller and Otto Dibelius, who played the official roles of the Church in the turbulent history of the 20th century. These two men were church politicians and pastors, and they were not considered to be outstanding thinkers when compared with contemporary theologians such as Barth and Bonhoeffer. Nevertheless, they are recognized as leaders who had gone through the two World Wars, the rise and fall of the Nazi Regime, and the division of the Fatherland, spanning more than a half-century of German contemporary history. In particular, they were the key figures that contributed to the establishment of the confessional church, which was born out of the spirit of the resistance. After the end of the war, they reestablished the church and acted as historical witnesses who led the people in the divided nation. This study focuses on the ideas and practices of the two men in terms of the relationship between the state and the society, idealism verses realism, and theo-logical reflection on their faithful practices. With its historical-theo logical review, it seeks to find a model for the solutions for the challenges of the contemporary Korean church.
