본 논문은 정량적 정보를 표현하기 위한 시각적 방법을 구체적으로 분석하고, 효과적인 방법을 정리 및 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 데이터의 홍수 속에서 단순 데이터로 머무는 것이 아니라, 복잡한 데이터를 기반으로 한 체계적인 정보로 정리 될 때에 보는 사람들의 이해도는 올라가며, 이를 시각화할 경우 이해도는 한 층 더 높아진다. 시대 및 기술의 변화로 대중에게 요구되는 정보의 처리와 정보의 독해를 효과적으로 이루어내기 위한 시각화 방법을 연구한다. 본 연구는 <미래 사회와 지리적 기반 정보의 시각화에 관한 연구>(조형미디어학, 2018, 21-4호)를 시작으로 확장 연구한 결과물이다. <2. 정량적 정보 시각화의 구분>에서는 정량적 정보의 시각화가 많이 이루어지는 분야 별로 살펴보며 시각화의 특성을 분석한다. <3. 정량적 정보 시각화와 시각 요소>에서는 정량적 정보를 나타내는 시각 요소의 종류에 따라 정보를 전달하는 방법의 차이를 심층적으로 살펴보고 특히 레이아웃의 중요성을 입증한다. <4. 내러티브(스토리) 정보의 시각화>에서는 앞의 내용들을 토대로 정량적 정보로 스토리텔링을 하고자하는 내용의 디자인에 초점을 맞추어 심층적 분석을 통한 효과적인 방법을 제안하며, 역시 레이아웃의 중요성이 강조된다. 정량적 정보가 단순히 숫자나 차트를 전달하는 데에 그치지 않고 거시적 관점의 내러티브를 제공하는 시각화 방법을 모색한다.

This research focuses on analysing and proposing effective visualization of quantitative information. With overflowing data, intelligibility rises when data is arranged systematically as information is derived from complex data. It becomes even more effective when information is visualized. With changes of time and technology, this research looks into designing effective approach for the public to handle and comprehend quantitative information. This research is a further study that roots from < A Study of Geography Based Information Visualization in the Future Society >(Formative Media Studies, 2018, 21-4). < 2. Classification of visualizing quantitative information > analyzes different areas where quantitative information is visualized frequently. < 3. Visualizing quantitative information and visual elements > focuses on different communication approaches according to the visual element that represents information. It also emphasizes the importance of layout when information is transformed visually. < 4. Visualizing narrative information > builds up on chapter 1,2 and 3, focusing on visualizing narratives that are based on quantitative information and proposes effective approach for visual storytelling, also emphasizing layout. This research shows a macroscopic viewpoint of visualizing quantitative information beyond the boundaries of numbers and charts.
