동성애에 대한 사회적 태도는 시간과 장소에 따라 변화를 겪어왔다. 고대 그리스 사회에서는 몇 가지 형태의 동성애를 용인하였다. 그러나 유대교 및 기독교의 영향을 받은 후기 아브라함 종교에서는 남색(男色)을 신의 뜻과 자연에 거슬리는 죄로 간주하였다. 소크라테스, 바이런, 에드워드 2세를 포함한 많은 역사상의 남성들은 동성연애 또는 양성애(兩性愛) 관계를 가졌다고 한다. 그러나 미쉘 포콜트와 같은 사람은 이러한 행위를 시대착오적인 것으로 간주하였다. 법률해석자들이 주장하는 일반적인 특징은 고대 사회에서나 중세 시대에 있어서 그 누구도 동성애를 독점적, 영구적으로 경험하지도 않았고 성에 대한 하나의 개념으로 받아들이지도 않았다. 존 보스웰은 개인적으로 독점적인 동성애를 누리고 있다는 플라톤의 고대 그리스에 관한 글을 인용하면서 이와 같은 주장에 반박을 하였다. 독점적이었던지 아니면 비독점적이었던지, 또는 혹은 영구적이었던지 아니면 일시적이었던지 간에, 이성애(異性愛)와 양성애와 더불어 현대 사회에 나타난 대중 매체 속의 동성애 경향은 고대 그리스와 기독교, 인도 종교, 그리고 유교(儒敎)와 도교(道敎)와 같은 동아시아의 종교가 가지고 있는 경향과는 사뭇 다른 특징을 보이고 있다.

Societal attitudes towards same-sex relationships have varied over time and place. It was accepted in some forms in ancient Greece. However, in later cultures influenced by Abrahamic religions of Judaism and Christianity, the law and the church established sodomy as a transgression against divine law or a crime against nature. Many male historical figures, including Socrates, Lord Byron, Edward II, have had terms such as gay or bisexual ap plied to them; some scholars, such as Michel Foucault, have regarded this as anachronistic. A common thread of constructionist argument is that no one in antiquity or the Middle Ages experienced homosexu ality as an exclusive, permanent, or defining mode of sexuality. John Boswell has countered this argument by citing ancient Greek writings by Plato, which describe individuals exhibiting exclusive homosexuality. Whether exclusive or not, or permanent or not, the trend of homosexuality along with heterosexuality and bisexuali ty in mass media shown in the modern global tends to show quite a different peculiarity compared with those of an cient Greece and specific religious groups such as Abrahamic religions, Indian religions, and East Asian religions su ch as Confucianism and Taoism.
