이 글에서는 순명효황후가 위관 김상덕에게 보낸 11건의 언간을 검토하고 있다. 친인척이 아닌 성균관 대사성 김상덕과 언간을 주고받았다는 점이 주목할 만하다. 왕실 여성이 정치적인 사안과 관련해서 신하에게 보낸 편지가 있기는 하지만 그것은 정치적인 맥락에서 그렇게 한 것이다. 김상덕은 1892년 세자시강원에서 세자(순종)의 강학을 담당했던 사부였다. 그런데 처음 언간을 보내는 적어도 1894년까지 이전까지 순명효황후는 김상덕을 대면한 적이 없었던 것으로 보인다. 순명효황후는 편지 보내는 것에 대해 조심스러워했다. 언간이 알려지지 않도록 해달라고 부탁하기도 했다. 그럼에도 1904년 세상을 떠날 때까지 10여 년간 편지를 주고받았다. 11세 어린 나이에 궁궐에 들어와 급격한 정치 변동과 근대사를 온 몸으로 부딪히며 살았다. 시어머니 명성황후가 시해되는 것을 목격하기도 했다. 외척의 정치참여와 격심한 갈등을 보면서 스스로 경계했다. 그래서 그녀는 친정 식구들과도 가깝게 지내지 않았다. 그런 면에서 덕망 높은 세자의 사부이기도 한 김상덕은 적절한 인물이었다. 그는 구한말 정치적 소용돌이 속에서 관직을 버리는 선비의 면모를 보여주기도 했다. 순명효황후는 황실의 근황을 전하기도 하고 김상덕에게 고종을 위해 충성을 다해달라고 요청하기도 했다. 순명효황후 언간을 통해서 구한말 급격하게 변화해가는 근대사의 흐름 속에서 왕실여성이 지녔던 내면세계를 살펴볼 수 있다.

This paper focuses on the Eongan of Empress SunmyeongHyo written in Korean. Empress SunmyeongHyo was the first empress of Emperor Sunjong who was the 27th king of the Joseon Dynasty and the 2nd emperor of the Korean Empire. All 11 letters were written to Wigwan Kim Sang Deok, who had been rector of the National Confucian Academy. Remarkably, Empress and Kim Sang Deok exchanged the letters. There was a letter to officers, but she did so in a political context. The relationship between Empress SunmyeongHyo and Kim Sang Deok was special. It is regarded that Kim Sang Deok became acquainted with the empress when he taught prince(later Emperor) at Academy for the Crown Prince. According to various circumstances, Kim Sang Deok was also a teacher to Empress SunmyeongHyo. This is because Empress SunmyeongHyo especially regarded Kim Sang Deok as a respected teacher. Empress SunmyeongHyo was very careful about sending the letters. She also asked to keep the letters secret, because she was wary of talkative and useless rumors. Nevertheless, what is the reason for sending letters to each other for a long time? As a young empress, she lived through all kinds of violent political changes and modern history. In particular, she seemed to be afraid to see her mother-in-law assassinated. Maybe it’s because of being wary, she was not so close to her family. Lonely in the palace, she seemed to need a partner that can lean mentally. It was necessary to have “a conversational partner” who could speak her mind. In that sense, Kim Sang Deok, the owner of outstanding scholars and personalities, was an appropriate figure. He also showed the aspect of Seonbi leaving his office without regret. The Eongans of Empress SunmyeongHyo could tell us an aspect of Inner World and Way of Thinking of a woman of the Royal House in the Modern history of Korea.
