협력과 선의의 경쟁을 강조해 왔던 미중 양국관계가 점차 다양한 영역에서 경쟁을 넘어 갈등의 관계로 나아가고 있고, 최근에는 언론 영역에서도 이러한 갈등이 심화되고 있다. 본 연구는 언론관에 대한 미국과 중국의 근본적인 인식 차이와 함께 중국의 언론 환경 변화가 미중 갈등을 촉진하고 있다고 분석했다. 먼저 언론을 둘러싼 미중 갈등은 체제 경쟁의 성격을 갖고 있기에 양국이 패권 경쟁을 지속하는 한, 미중 언론 갈등은 지속 및 심화될 가능성이 크다. 이와 함께 시진핑 집권 이후, 중국 내에서 언론 통제가 강화되고 있고, 언론 시장에 대한 외국 기업의 진입 장벽이 높은 것 또한 미중 갈등을 야기하고 있다. 한편, 미국의 글로벌 언론 매체들과 어깨를 나란히 할 정도로 중국 언론 매체들의 국제적 영향력이 커졌고, 미국 본토에서도 적극적으로 활동을 하며 영향력을 행사하면서 중국 언론을 견제해야 한다는 미국 내 여론이 미중 갈등으로 이어지고 있다. 한국과 중국 사이에서도 언론관의 차이가 존재하고, 중국의 미디어 시장에 대한 진출 방안을 적극적으로 모색해야 하는 만큼, 미중 언론 마찰을 주의 깊게 관찰할 필요가 있다.

The U.S.-China relations, which have emphasized cooperation and competition in good faith, are gradually moving to conflict in various areas, and recently, they are also showing serious conflicts in the media sector. The study analyzed that China’s media environment changes, along with the fundamental difference in perception between the U.S. and China on the press, are promoting the U.S.-China conflict. First of all, the U.S.-China conflict over the press will continue and deepen as long as the two countries continue to compete for hegemony, because conflict over the press have the nature of system competition. And since Xi Jinping took power, press control has been tightened in China, and the high barriers to foreign companies’ entry into the media market have also caused conflicts between the U.S. and China. In addition, public opinion has grown that the Chinese press should be kept in check as it is actively engaged in activities in the U.S. and the international influence of Chinese press has become similar to that of American press in the world. As there is also a difference in press views between Korea and China, and we have to seek ways to enter China’s media market, it is necessary to carefully observe the U.S.-China conflict over the press.
