이 글은 근대화, 산업화 이후 급속도로 파괴되고 있는 자연에 대한 반성과 위기의식 속에서, 우리 선조들은 자연·생명을 어떻게 바라보고, 어떤 관계를 유지해왔는지 한국민요를 통해 찾아보고, 지속가능한 미래를 위해 우리의 인식과 태도를 어떻게 변화시켜야 할지 성찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이에 한국민요 중 자연·생명을 다룬 노래를 택해 노래 속 화자(서술자)에 따라 사람이 화자인 경우와 자연·생명(동물)이 화자인 경우로 나누어 민요 속에 나타난 자연·생명관을 고찰하였다. 인간의 목소리로 인간·자연·생명의 관계를 풀어낸 노래로 <줌치(주머니) 노래>, <누에 노래>, <서답(월경대) 노래>, <애운애기 노래>, <타박네 노래>, <쌍가락지 노래> 등을 살펴 본 결과, 이들 노래에는 자연의 모든 생명은 서로 연결돼 있으며 인간은 자연의 일부라는 점, 인간의 이승 삶은 저승의 삶이나 환생한 생명과 밀접하게 연결돼 있다는 점, 자연·생명, 그중에서도 특히 동물은 인간을 위로하고 애환을 나누는 존재라는 점이 부각되고 있음을 밝혔다. 한편 자연·생명의 목소리로 나타내는 노래인 <소 노래>, <닭 노래>, <꿩 노래>, <생선 삼촌 노래> 등의 동물 노래에는 동물도 인간과 마찬가지로 고통과 슬픔을 느끼는 존재이며, 가족과 같은 공동체를 이루어 살고 있음을 보여줌으로써 인간 중심의 삶을 돌아보게 하고 있다는 점을 살폈다. 이를 통해 한국민요에 나타난 가장 중요하고 근본적인 자연·생명관은 생명 약자인 자연·생명을 존중하고 배려하는 의식과 태도임을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 이에 미래 세대가 자신들의 필요를 충족하며 살 수 있는 ‘지속가능한 미래’를 위해, 인간의 생명 약자에 대한 폭력적 삶을 반성하고 자연·생명과의 공생을 모색해 온 한국민요 속 정신을 다시금 되새겨야 함을 강조하였다.
This article aims to determine how our ancestors looked at nature and life and how they maintained their relationship with nature in Korean folk songs. In addition, it reflects on how we should change our perceptions and attitudes for a sustainable future as we face the crisis of nature, which is rapidly being destroyed after industrialization. Therefore, I chose songs that cover nature and life among Korean folk songs and divided them into cases where the person is a speaker, according to that narrator, nature and life (animals) are also speakers in the song. As a result, the following points were found. First, the songs that unravel the relationship of humans, nature, and life with human voices, such as “Pouch Song” and “Silkworm Song,” reveal that all lives in nature are connected to each other, and human beings are part of nature; what humans do in this world is closely related to the life of other worlds or reincarnation. Moreover, these songs emphasize that nature and life, especially animals, are beings that understand and comfort humans. On the other hand, the songs that are expressed from the voices of nature and life, particularly animal songs, such as “Cow Song,” “Hen Song,” and “Pheasant Song,” show that animals, like humans, feel pain and sorrow, and that they are living in a community like a family. These songs make us reflect on the human-centered life. To this end, the spirit suggested by these folk songs should be revived for a sustainable future society, reflecting on the violent life of human beings against the underprivileged, and seeking and practicing symbiosis with nature and life.
