본 연구는 서사무가에 나타나는 ‘자살’의 양상과 의미에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 죽음에 대한 대표적 의례라 할 만한 함경도 망묵굿의 굿거리 가운데 자살 모티프가 특징적으로 나타나는 〈도랑선비 청정각시〉, 〈대감굿〉을 대상으로, ‘‘자살’이 갖는 신화적 의미를 새롭게 살피고 그 의례적 함의를 짚어내고자 했다. 우선 서사무가 <도랑선비 청정각시>를 분석하였다. 청정각시는 신혼초에 죽은 남편 도랑선비를 만나기 위해 갖가지 지난한 시도를 행하지만 뜻을 이루지 못하다가 ‘자살’을 통해 그와의 만남을 성취한다. 이승과 저승, 또는 삶과 죽음 사이의 본질적 엇갈림이라는 문제상황을 극복하는 핵심 역할을 ‘자살’이 수행하고 있다. 청정각시의 ‘자살’은 본인이 간절히 원하는 바를 이루기 위한 의지와 염원이 집약된 행동으로서 그 핵심적 의미는 상징적 죽음을 통해 기존의 자기자신을 버리고 경계를 넘어선 새로운 존재로 거듭나는 데 있다고 볼 수 있다. 다음으로 <대감굿> 서사무가를 분석했다. 이 무가는 주인공 짐달언이 억울하게 패사한 아버지 짐미련의 원수를 갚은 뒤 스스로 목숨을 끊는 내용으로 이루어져 있다. 이 서사무가에서는 아버지 원수갚기와 신으로 좌정하기라는 두 서사가 서로 단절돼 있는데 그 전환을 추동하는 것이 ‘자살’ 모티프이다. 짐달언의 ‘자살’은 아버지의 복수에만 매몰된 과거의 삶을 스스로 청산하는 상징적 죽음으로 이해할 수 있다. <도랑선비 청정각시>와 <대감굿> 두 서사무가를 통해 볼 때 망묵굿에 나타나는 ‘자살’은 자기 포기나 좌절과 같은 일반적인 의미와 질적으로 다른 신화적 의미를 지니고 있다. 그것은 주인공들이 적극적인 자기 선택을 통해 자신이 매몰돼 있던 지난 삶과 결별하고 존재적 거듭남을 추구하는 일로서 성격을 지닌다. 그 과정을 통해 주인공은 경계를 넘어선 영원의 존재로서 신격을 부여받는 것이 특징이다. 아울러 ‘자살’ 모티프가 갖는 제의적 의미를 분석하였다. 망묵굿은 죽음에 대한 굿이다. 망묵굿 굿거리들은 가족이나 이웃의 죽음을 앞에 두고 삶과 죽음 사이에 가로놓인 존재에 대해 전면적 성찰을 행하는 과정으로서 의미를 지닌다. 서사무가는 망자의 죽음을 음미하는 동시에 의례적 죽음을 통해 굿 참가자 자신이 죽음을 간접경험하는 과정으로서 성격을 지닌다. 두 죽음의 만남을 통해 삶과 죽음의 경계를 넘어선 제의적 소통이 이루어진다. 아울러 굿 참여자들은 언젠가 맞이할 스스로의 죽음을 미리 경험하는 가운데 그것을 받아들이고 넘어서는 경험을 하게 된다. 삶과 죽음의 아득한 경계를 경험하면서 그것을 넘어서는 의례적 몸짓의 극점에 ‘스스로를 죽이는 일’로서 자살이 놓인다고 할 수 있다. 망묵굿의 ‘자살’은 죽음을 통해 죽음을 극복하는 역설적이고도 초월적인 몸짓이라고 할 수 있다.

In this study, it was examined the aspect and meaning of 'Suicide' in shamanic narratives. To this end, it was focused on the motif of 'suicide' shown in < Dorang-Seonbi Cheongjeong-gaksi > and < Daegamgut >, the main songs of << Mangmutgut >> in Hamgyeong-do. It intended to examine the symbolic meaning of 'suicide' in the mythical context, since this Gut is a ritual to honor the souls of the dead, and 'suicide' is emerging as an important element of the process of the god’s taking seat on. First of all, it analyzed < Dorang-Seonbi Cheongjeong-gaksi >, a shamanic narrative. Cheongjeong-gaks went through many attempts and hardships to meet Dorang-Seonbi. Chengjeong-gaksi had a different result from his previous attempts through 'suicide', but it was verified that her suicide was playing its role to bring the most essential and dramatic change in terms of that she was able to be with Dorang-Seonbi. It was analyzed that Chengjong-gaksi's 'suicide' was to embody herself who was newly reborn, abandoning her own nature in order to pursue what she wants and to be reborn to be right woman to him at the same time. Next, it was analyzed < Daegamgut >. Daegamgut has a story of Jimdaleon paying back the enemy for his father, Jimmiryeon who died in the war. In this shamanic narrative, it was cut off each other from the revenge for father and the process of gods taking seat on, and it is the 'suicide' motif that drives this changeover. Jimdaleon's 'suicide' can be understood as a symbolic death to end his past life which was solely hung up on the revenge for his father. As such, it can be explained that the 'suicide' in Mangmutgut has a literary meaning as a symbol showing that the main characters of shaman songs are pursuing their existential change and breaking with their subordinate lives through 'self-selection' In addition, the ritual meaning of the “suicide” motif was analyzed. << Mangmutgut >> symbolizes a 'suicide' as an image of person, who boldly forsake one's former self in order to pursue a new self. And it reminds people of the meaning of reflection and communication about themselves through the narratives of the main character who committed suicide becoming gods. Also, the changeover of mythical characters into new beings through self-selection is consistent with the wishes of the audience who participating in Gut for the dead. It may also reflect the audience's desire for their dead to do so through the characters who chose to die on their own, dreaming of a new changeover. Through this, the participants of Gut can overcome the rite of passage of death while purifying the death of the deceased. << Mangmutgut >> has also a ritualistic meaning.
