An Analysis of Research Trends in Korean Language Education for Multicultural Students

This study analyzes research trends of Korean language education for students who have multi-cultural backgrounds. To this end, this study analyzes 253 dissertations in the fields and draw implication from the analysis; first, there is a need to define language capabilities required to multi-cultural students. Second, multi-level approaches are needed to address various characteristics of learners. Third, researchers need to conduct studies that cover middle school students, high school students and incoming teenage students from foreign countries. Fourth, there is a need to expand research issues that are focusing on vocabulary based academic literacy to issues like analyzing grammar and conversational structures. Fifth, contents-based instruction model and tightly coupled cooperation systems with other subjects should be developed. Sixth, more research about evaluation and teachers’ capacities should be encouraged. Lastly, various and multi-level research methodologies are need to be introduced for the development of the fields. (Hansung University)
