이 연구는 여기 아닌 다른 곳으로부터 온 타자와의 만남을 다룬 서사들을 ‘이방인 서사’로 개념화하고, 이들 서사의 문학적 형상화 양상을 분석하여 그 문학교육적 함의를 탐색하고자 하였다. 유동하는 시대 속에서 우리는 이전보다 더 자주 이방인과 만나며, 이방인으로서 살아간다. ‘이방인 서사’는 물리적 국경의 이편과 저편을 사유하게 하면서 동시에 주체와 타자, 개인과 공동체, 공동체와 또다른 공동체 간의 내면적 국경 및 공존의 윤리를 성찰케 한다는 점에서 문학교육의 텍스트로서 주목할 만한 지점을 갖는다. 또한 이방인은 이 세계의 동일성을 깨뜨리며 이질성을 통한 변화를 촉진하는 이들로서 의미를 지닌다. 이방인은 시간과 공간 속에서 계속해서 재구성되는 유동적 존재이다. 그는 혈연적 구속이나 지역성을 초월하여 존재함으로써 그가 당도한 세계의 정체성을 흔들며 세계의 경계를 변형시킨다. 이방인들은 우리에게 기존의 세계가 정말 살 만한 것인가 하는 본질적 질문을 던지며, 이를 통해 보다 인간다운 삶과 사회의 윤리로 함께 나아가기를 촉구하는 변화의 담지자들이다. 본 연구는 이방인 서사의 문학교육적 함의를 ‘삶의 지평을 뒤흔드는 질문자로서의 형상화’, ‘점에서 입체로, 타자에 대한 인식의 재편’, ‘공존의 세계에 대한 상상적 모색’으로 제시하고, 김연수의 <모두에게 복된 새해>와 최은영의 <쇼코의 미소>, 김애란의 <그곳에 밤 여기에 노래>를 주요 텍스트로 삼아 구체적으로 논의를 전개하였다.

This study attempts to conceptualize narratives dealing with encounters with others from other places as “Stranger Narratives”, and to explore the literary educational implications of such narratives. In the present age of heightened mobility, we encounter strangers more often than ever before and ourselves live as strangers. The stranger narrative is worth noting as a text of literary education in that it reflects the ethics of coexistence between the subject and the other, the individual and the community, and one community and another. Strangers are fluid beings constantly reconstructed in time and space. They exist beyond kinship redemption or locality to shake up the identity of the world they arrive into and transform its boundaries. Strangers are the bearers of change, asking us the essential question of whether the existing world is as good as it is thought to be, and urging us to move together toward a more desirable life and social ethics. This study identifies the literary educational implications of stranger narratives as “representing a questioner who shakes up the existent horizon”, “reshaping the sense of the other”, and “initiating an imaginative search for the world of coexistence”.
