Korean pastime activities dealt in the ancient murals of Goguryeo and the genre paintings of Joseon are not numerous; games depicted in painting are not various. The ancient murals of Goguryeo usually dealt with subjects of military arts, and the genre paintings of Joseon mostly depicted games of commoners. Since the Korean pastime activities dealt in the genre paintings of Korea usually had purposes of seasonal observance and entertainment while the group games with a mass were not dealt with much, the trend of the late Joseon genre painting appears to avoid large scale drawings of many people in various scenes as if depicting documental art, and prefer simple drawing of relatively small scale drawings of games of the commoners participated by few people. This research is an attempt to understand the disappearing folk games at the point where vigorous research of the pastime culture of Korea is not realized, and pursue original form of games; and formed, at the same time, as a solution of methodology to educate foreign learners about Korean culture. Although ancient murals or genre paintings are only a portion, they became important visual historical material for understanding traditional games of Korea, and the games became one of the themes of genre paintings attracted by artists of important positions in Korean art history. However, since understanding overall pastime activities of Korea through Korean art is difficult due to limited number of ancient murals and genre paintings dealing with various games, one can increase understanding of traditional games through seasonal customs and traditional festivals.
