본고는 제임스 게일의 『九雲夢』 英譯本인 The Cloud Dream of the Nine을 목표수신독자 중심의 게일의 번역관을 기반으로 번역비평을 전개한 것이다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 그의 번역관과 패러텍스트(paratext)를 검토하였으며, 3장에서는 게일의 목표수신독자 중심의 번역관을 바탕으로 원천텍스트에 보이는 인명과 동양의 문화요소 등이 번역텍스트에 구현된 양상을 분석하였다. 그 개략은 다음과 같다. 2장에서는 텍스트에 대한 번역비평을 전개하기에 앞서 게일의 번역관을 규명해보았다. 영문 잡지 The Korea Magazine과 번역서의 서문에 산발적으로 보이는 게일이 작성한 번역과 관련된 논의 속에서 그의 번역관을 추출해보았다. 특히 그가 1893년에 작성한 ‘번역의 원칙(The Principles of Translation)’을 기반으로 그의 목표수신독자 중심의 번역관을 고찰하였다. 또한 번역비평을 위한 기준을 마련하고자 패러텍스트를 검토하였다. 페리텍스트(peritext)로는 게일이 작성한 서문을, 에피텍스트(epitext)로는 예츠, 페슬러, 프란시스카의 서문과 해설 그리고 영문계간지인 The Korea Bookman에 수록된 기사인 “The Cloud Dream of the Nine by KIM MAN-CHOONG(1617-1682 A.D)”을 개괄하여 게일이 『九雲夢』을 번역한 목적과 번역과정에서 염두에 두었던 요소를 살펴보았다. 3장에서는 목표수신독자 중심의 게일의 번역관을 기반으로 번역비평을 전개하였다. 게일은 자신이 목표한 서구독자의 충실한 작품 감상을 위해 번역과정에서 원천텍스트의 서법(敍法)을 전환시켰다. 또한 게일은 서구독자에게 지식적·문화적 거리감을 유발할 수 있는 요소를 의도적으로 ‘생략’하거나 ‘로컬리제이션(localization)’ 혹은 ‘상위어(hypernym)’를 활용하여 도착어로 구현하였다. 추가적으로 번역텍스트에 자신의 가시성(visibility)을 드러내었으며, ‘미주’를 첨가하기도 하였다.

This study aims to review James Scarth Gale’s English version, The Cloud Dream of the Nine, based on his translation principles and text understanding. In Chapter 2, we clarified Gale's view of translation for translation criticism. His view of translation was extracted in discussions related to translation shown sporadically in the preface of a translation or an English magazine The Korea Magazine. Especially focusing on ‘The Principles of Translation’ he wrote on his own in 1893, we identified his view of translation. In addition to Gale's view of translation, the paratext was reviewed to establish standards for translation criticism. We analyzed the preface written by Gale as the peritext and ‘The Cloud Dream of the Nine by KIM MAN-CHOONG(1617-1682 A.D)’ of The Korea Bookman, preface and commentary of Yetts, Fessler, Francisca Cho as the epitext. In Chapter 3, we attempted translation criticism based on Gale's view of translation. First, we reviewed translation patterns generally appearing in the text such as a title, proper nouns. In addition, the translated text was analyzed with a focus on the translation strategies that Gale chose for Western readers. Gale used strategies such as 'omission', 'localization', 'endnote', 'hypernym', and so on. At the sentence level, he also changed the mood to clarify the translations.
