이 논문은 최근 한국에서 괄목할 만한 성장을 이루고 있는 오디오북에 관한 학술 담론 중 구술성과 관련한 연구이다. 미디어 생태학 분야의 주요 학자인 월터 옹의 검토로 잘 알려진 용어로서, 논의의 방향은 ‘문자성’, ‘기술(記述)성’, ‘기록성’, ‘읽기와 쓰기’, ‘읽고 쓰는 능력’ 등의 의미를 가진 ‘리터러시’의 중요성이 너무 강조된 나머지 오랫동안 상대적으로 폄훼되었던 구술성의 가치가 오디오북을 필두로 한 디지털 미디어 시대를 맞이하여 급부상했으며, 이는 당연하고 긍정적이라는 것이다. 연구는 오디오북 산업과 문화가 이미 상당한 수준으로 성장한 미국의 논의를 중심으로, 옹이 주장한 근원적 구술성과 2차적 구술성 개념을 바탕으로 나누어 검토했다. 2차적 구술성과 관련해서는 오디오북의 교육적, 인지적 효과에 대한 담론이 주를 이루었고, 근원적 구술성과 관련하여서는 구텐베르크 괄호치기와 같은 최근의 논의들이 생산되고 있다. 개념의 검토와 함께 오디오북 문화의 건설적 창발을 위한 제언을 덧붙였다.

This paper aims to scrutinize the concept of orality related the academic discourse on audiobooks which have recently achieved remarkable growth in Korea. As a well-known term for review by Walter Ong, a major scholar in media ecology, the direction of the discussion is that the importance of literacy, which means ‘textuality’, ‘descriptivity’, ‘recordability’, ‘read and write’, has been so emphasized that the value of oral speech, which has long been relatively disparaged, has risen rapidly in the digital media era with audiobooks as the lead. The study was divided and reviewed based on the fundamental orality and secondary orality concepts claimed by Ong, focusing on the discussion of the United States, where the audiobook industry and culture have already grown to a considerable level. Discussions on the educational and cognitive effects of audiobooks have been the main focus on secondary orality, and recent discussions such as Gutenberg parenthesis are being produced in relation to fundamental orality. Along with the review of the concept, he added suggestions for the constructive creation of audiobook culture.
