This study aimed to understand the effects of social distance between the inviter and the invitee, and interest in propositive contents on the performance of invitation, and the reasons for invitation through a survey. Total 204 Korean male and female university students(M=89, F=115) and 158 Japanese male and female university students(M=84, F=64) participated in the survey.
In the results of the survey, the invitations were more frequently made between people closer to each other. The inviters made invitations by paying attention to common interests or the other’s interests, instead of asking someone to participate in their own interests. As the reasons why men and women of Korea and Japan would make invitations to someone close, the inviters’ desire, desire of the invitee, and closeness were a lot mentioned. As the reasons for making invitations to someone who was not close, regardless of having interest in propositive contents, the desire for getting closer with the relevant person through invitation was mentioned the most. This study empirical examined the function of invitation to narrow down the social distance with others.
