초대교회 당시에도 전염병이 창궐하였고 현재까지 계속되고 있다. 그러한 재난 속에서 초대 기독교는 왜 인류가 이런 끔찍한 시대에 봉착하게 되었는지 보다 만족스러운 해명을 해주었고 희망차고도 활력적인 미래상을 제시했으며, 기독교의 사랑과 선행의 가치관은 사회봉사와 공동체 결속을 돈독히 하는 데에 크게 기여하였다. 재앙이 닥쳤을 때 기독교인은 더 훌륭하게 대처했고 그 결과는 월등히 높은 생존률이었다. 이것이 뜻하는 바는 매번 역병이 휩쓸고 간 후, 기독교인은 새로운 개종 없이도 전체 인구에서 차지하는 비중이 더 커졌다는 것이다. 한국의 초기 선교역사에서도 전염병이 창궐할 때마다 의료 선교사들은 고통속에 있는 자들을 위해 희생하며 그들을 전심을 다해 봉사하였다, 이렇게 섬겼을 때에, 그들은 한국인들에게 기독교 신앙의 본질과 복음의 능력을 실제적으로 보여 주었다. 이러한 희생과 봉사가 새로운 복음의 씨앗이 많은 사람들에게서, 특히 고통을 당한 자들의 삶 속에서 솟아오르게 했던 생명의 모판이 되었다. 또한 모든 선교사역이 원활하게 펼쳐질 수 있는 선교적 교두보를 마련하였다. 그런 면에서, 초기 한국교회 역사 속에서 전염병을 치료하는 가운데 복음전도를 개시하고 활성화하는 데에 어떻게 기여했는지를 고찰하면, 현재 코로나19로 인한 심각한 사태를 이겨낼 수 있는 교회의 사명과 기독인의 자세를 바르게 정립하는 데에도 도움이 될 것이다. 이 논고에서는 전염병을 중심으로 다양한 질병과 장애를 극복하는 과정에서 의료선교가 복음전도에 기여한 바를 고찰하고자 한다.

The epidemic spread rampantly even during the early church and it is still continues today. Early Christianity gave a satisfying explanation in such a catastrophe rather than a reason why mankind ended up facing this terrible time and it presented a hopeful as well as energetic image of the future. The values of love and good deeds in Christianity contributed greatly to strengthening social services and solidarity of community. Christians reacted better when a disaster strikes and the result was an exceptionally high survival rate. In other words, the importance of Christians in the entire population became more essential without new conversions after a plague swept away at all times. Medical missionaries made sacrifices for those people in pain and they served them with all their hearts whenever a temporary prevalence of a disease broke out also in the early history of missions in Korea. They practically showed Koreans the essence of the Christian faith and the power of the Gospel. These sacrifices and service became the seedbed of life that had rose in the lives of, especially, the suffered from the individuals who have a lot of seeds of the new Gospel. In addition, a missional bridgehead has been prepared for every single mission ministry can unfold smoothly. In that sense, studying how it played a part in initiating and revitalizing evangelism while treating an epidemic in the history of the early Korean church will assist to properly formulate the mission of the church and the attitude of a Christian that are able to overcome the serious situation caused by the current Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a respiratory illness that is capable of spreading from person to person. In this paper, I will examine the contributions of medical missions to evangelism in the process of overcoming a variety of diseases and obstacles centering on infectious diseases.
