Triggered by COVID-19, the whole world is now facing a grave crisis which is unprecedented in modern times. What’s more, the pandemic has rendered resurgent Christianity as a politico-theological question. This is specifically the case in South Korea where the Shincheonji Church of Jesus and the pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon came to be seen as the accelerator of the pandemic. They are, as it were, a paragon of ‘homo religiosus.’ Motivated by the status quo, this article attempts to give a genealogical account of the question of ‘homo religiosus’ against whose maleficence the renowned Protestant theologian Karl Barth has long before raised objection. It seems that as a semi-institution within modern society the praxis of tolerance or toleration has already reached its expiration date because today we can no longer consider it effective under any circumstances. However, when it comes to the Christian stance on the Jewish people, it is almost impossible to expect that Christians make up with the latter. For the Jewish nation is the People of God, but this is exactly what the Christians wants to be. The complexity by which Christianity cannot but be engulfed when they deal with the Jewish people traces back to the thoughts of Saint Paul. This self-styled apostle of Jesus Christ was a Jew, and as such he tried to abrogate the Law of Moses on the basis of Gnosticism that would since then continue to ambush in Christianity. Barth wanted to eliminate toxins from Paul’s Gnosticism and thereupon set the Protestant Church on her feet. Contrariwise, Jacob Taubes, Barth’s one-time disciple and an academic maverick, was eager to propagate and universalize Paul’s Gnostic religion which, according to Taubes, has (almost) nothing to do with Christendom. Whereas they tried to figure out what Paul really wanted to say, Barth and Taubes nonetheless did not─ purposely or not─take note of the viable connection between Paul’s Epistle to the Romans and Ecclesiastes. Their bizarre omission leads us to ponder upon a fundamental issue that lies at the bottom of all religions and convictions: the entanglement of exegesis and eisegesis. Given its deep-rootedness, generality, and permanence, it stands to reason that ‘homo religiosus’ whose intrepidity makes eisegesis thrive would become extinct not until the end of history.
