본 논문에서는 등장인물의 장애를 중심으로 세미마루 전승을 통시적으로 고찰함으로써 장애에 대한 일본의 사회의식에 대해 생각해보고자 한다. 세미마루(蝉丸)는 헤이안 시대의 가인(歌人)이자 비파의 명인으로 유명한 인물이지만, 사실 생몰년과 출신 등이 역사적으로 확인되지 않는 전설적 인물이다. 세미마루와 관련된 전승은 헤이안 시대에 등장한 이후 설화집과 가론서(歌論書), 기행문과 신사의 연기담(寺社縁起) 등 폭넓은 분야의 문헌에서 다양하게 전개되었으며, 가면극과 인형극의 소재가 되어 무대에서 공연되기도 했다. 전개 과정에서 등장 인물에게 신체적 장애 그리고 황족이라는 고귀한 신분이라는 상반된 성격이 부가되었는데 이는 세미마루 전승의 가장 큰 특징이라 할 수 있다. 등장인물의 신체적 장애에 대한 표현과 시대담론에 초점을 맞춰 헤이안 시대부터 근대까지 세미마루 전승을 통시적으로 고찰함으로써 장애에 대한 부정적 사회의식이 세미마루 전승에 미친 영향을 밝히고자 했다.

In this paper, I would like to think about the social consciousness of Japan’s disability by considering the semimaru stories focusing the characters’ disabilities. Semimaru is known as a man of the Heian era and a master of Biwa, but in fact, he is a legendary figure whose birth year and origin are not confirmed historically. The fact that the characters are added with the opposite personality of physical disability and noble status of the royal family is the biggest characteristic of Semimaru stories. Focusing on the character’s expression of physical disability and the discourse of the times, he gave a general consideration to the Semimaru stories from the Heian era to the modern era, revealing the impact of negative social consciousness on the semi-maru victory.
