왜 인공지능은 체스를 두는가? 이 논문은 딥 블루와 알파고의 대국이 인류 정보기술 역사에서 중요한 한 페이지를 차지하고 있는 한편, 내비게이션과 스마트폰속의 ‘빅스비’는 여성의 목소리로 안내하고 응대하는 인공 생명에 부과된 젠더체계에 문제를 제기하는 데에서 출발한다. 테크놀로지의 발전 과정에서 종종 기계의 ‘지적능력’을 남성적인 것으로, ‘상냥함’으로 대변되는 공감과 감수성 등의 감정 능력을 여성적인 것으로 재현하는 젠더 문화가 18세기 감성의 문화 이후 자동인형의 젠더적 분화와 무관하지 않음을 주장하면서, 19세기에 발표된 오귀스트 빌리에 드 릴아당의 『미래의 이브』를 감정 능력을 지닌 인공 생명 프로젝트로 읽어 본다. 이를 통해 특히 인공 행위자에 감정을 부여하고자 하는 시도는 많은 경우 인간을 대표하는 남성 주체가 타자로서 여성-기계에게 욕망을 투사하는 과정에서 생산되는 남성중심적 환상과 분리되기 힘든 것으로 파악한다. 결론에서는 영화 <엑스 마키나>를 통해 남성 창조자가 일방적으로 읽고 쓰는 텍스트에서 스스로 자신의 플롯을 쓰는 행위자가 되는 여성 안드로이드의 진화를 살펴본다.

Why does Artificial Intelligence play chess? This paper starts from this question that problematizes the conventional division of gender in contemporary IT practices that tends to represent intelligence of chess-playing AI as male, while female voices from automotive navigation systems and voice recognition software kindly respond to human’s request. By briefly surveying the history of artificial life from Pygmalion’s statue and an eighteenth-century female automaton of culture of sensibility to a female android in Auguste Villiers de l’Isle-Adam’s L’Ève future (1886), this study reads Villiers’s novel as a project of building an artificial life with affective capability. A close analysis of the novel suggests that the dream of making an affective artificial agent has a tendency of anthropocentricism tinted with male-centered fantasy of creating the ideal female companion as the projection of his own desire. The conclusion addresses Alex Garland’s recent film Ex Machina (2015) as an arguable sequel to L’Ève future in the evolution of a female android into an agency of writing her own plot, denying to be written with anthropocentric desire.
