본 논문은 그림 동화인 『라푼젤』을 원작으로 만들어진 디즈니 애니메이션 영화와 같은 이야기를 패러디하는 두 편의 미국시를 비교하여 분석한다. 이 세 작품은 모두 원작 동화에서 그다지 두드러지지 않는 모녀 관계와 여성의 성장 과정을 중심에 두고 있다는 공통점을 가지고 있다. 앤 섹스턴의 「라푼젤」은 여성 주인공을 탑에 가둔 마녀에게 “어머니 고델”이라는 이름을 부여하는 데 더하여, 고델과 라푼젤의 밀착된 관계가 지닌 일종의 동성애적인 면모를 보여 준다. 비록소녀가 상징계의 질서 속으로 편입되어 여성 주체가 되는 과정에서 이 관계는 단절되지만, 섹스턴은 그럼에도 불구하고 여성들 사이의 유대 관계에 큰 의미를 부여한다. 캐시 송의 「하얀 현관」은 어머니의 통제를 벗어나 밧줄을 내리고 남자친구를 방으로 끌어들이는 아시아계 미국인 소녀를 보여 주면서, 그녀가 이성애적 세계에 들어가기 위해 어머니와의 연대를 끊어내는 과정을 그린다. 이 시는 이 지점에서 끝나지 않고, 성인이 된 소녀가 어머니의 삶의 형태를 반복한다는 점을 암시한다는 점에서 동화의 세계를 해체한다. 디즈니의 <라푼젤> 역시 “어머니 고델”과 라푼젤 사이의 유사 모녀 관계를 중심에 두고 있으며, 스스로 머리카락을 자르고 어머니/마녀의 지배로부터 벗어나는 적극적인 여주인공을 그려낸다. 하지만 자신의 의지에 따라 행동하는 능동적인 여주인공의 존재에도 불구하고, 디즈니의 <라푼젤>은 결혼과 낭만적 사랑을 이상화하는 전형적 결론으로 나아간다. 또한, 디즈니의 <라푼젤>은 선한 여성과 악한 여성 사이의 전통적인 이분법 구조로 끝내 환원되는 경향을 보이며 이 구조는 인종/연령/계급의 차이에 대한 편견마저 강화시키게 된다.
This paper attempts to analyze Tangled, Disney’s animation movie based on Grimm Brothers’ Rapunzel, in relation to two poems that also parody the same story. The three re-writes of Rapunzel are similar in the sense that they all address the mother-daughter relationship and the process of female growth, which are not apparent in Grimm Brothers’ original story. Anne Sexton’s “Rapunzel” provides a name, Mother Gothel, for the witch who imprisons Rapunzel in the tower. In addition, it focuses on the extremely close relationship between Gothel and Rapunzel, suggesting that it borders on Lesbianism. Although the relationship needs to be broken so that the girl may enter the symbolic order, Sexton still puts a certain amount of value on female bonding. Song’s “The White Porch” presents an Asian-American girl who resists her mother’s control over her by throwing a rope and smuggling her boyfriend into her bedroom. This act shows that the girl severs the close tie with her mother in order to satisfy her desire for a heterosexual partner. Yet, instead of concluding her poem at this point, Song represents how the female subject ends up repeating her mother’s life. Disney’s Tangled also centers on a mother-daughter relationship between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel. The film appears to deviate from the typical pattern of a fairy tale in that it allows the heroine to cut her own hair and thereby rescue herself from the mother-witch’s rule. Yet, despite the presence of the lively female character who acts on her will, Tangled idealizes the marriage plot and the notion of romantic love. Moreover, the animation film reinforces the clearly binary opposition between a good woman and a bad woman, even connecting it to a series of differences based on race, age, and class.
