『마씨문통』은 서양의 문법론을 적용하여 중국인이 저술한 최초의 중국어 문법서로, 중국 언어학사에서 현대 중국 언어학, 중국 문법학의 시발점으로 중요한 의의가 있다. 한편, 『마씨문통』은 고대 중국어를 연구대상으로 삼아 전통 언어학과도 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있다. 따라서 중국의 전통언어학과 서양의 문법론을 연결 짓는 접합점이라 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 『마씨문통』의 전통언어학 계승양상을 세 가지 측면에서 종합적으로 고찰하였다. 첫째, 최초의 문법서가 저술되기까지 저자 마건충이 전통 언어학에 가진 문제의식을 고찰한다. 둘째, 『마씨문통』의 품사론, 통사론을 구성하는 개념어 가운데 전통 언어학의 용어를 활용한 사례를 분석한다. 셋째, 예문 분석에서 인용한 허사 연구서, 경전 주석서 혹은 경학연구자의 주장에 대한 『마씨문통』의 수용 양상을 분석한다. 이를 바탕으로 서양의 문법론과 전통 중국언어학이 융합하여 현대 중국어 문법학의 틀을 형성해 가는 과정의 일면을 밝히고자 한다.

Mashi Wentong is the first book of Chinese grammar written by a Chinese author that applied Western grammar theories and marks the beginning of modern Chinese linguistics and Chinese grammar studies in the history of Chinese linguistics. By focusing on ancient Chinese, the research in Mashi Wentong cannot be separated from traditional linguistics as well. Thus, Mashi Wentong serves as a touchpoint that connects traditional Chinese linguistics with Western grammar. This paper comprehensively examined how Mashi Wentong succeeded the elements of traditional linguistics. First, this study focused on author Ma Jianzhong’s views toward traditional linguistics until the point when he wrote the Chinese language’s first grammar book. Second, this study analyzed the passages in Mashi Wentong that use traditional linguistic terms to describe the parts of speech and the Chinese syntax. Third, this paper examined how the research on function words, which was quoted in the example analysis and the commentaries of classical works or arguments presented by classical scholars, was reflected in Mashi Wentong. Through the analysis, this paper aimed to show how Western grammar and traditional Chinese linguistics converged to form the foundation of modern Chinese grammar.
