본 논문은 중국 국가통계국의 31개성(省) 1인당 소득 및 소비 자료와 2018년 CFPS(중국가계패널조사) 서베이 데이터를 이용하여 중국 도시지역 중산층의 규모와 특징에 대해 분석하였다. 중산층의 기준은 중국 정부의 1인 월소득 2,000-5,000위안인 절대적 기준과 중위소득의 75%-200%의 상대적 기준을 적용하였다. 전국 및 동부, 중부, 서부, 동북부지역 도시 중산층의 규모를 추정하고, 중산층의 직업 구성과 교육수준에 대해 분석하였다. CFPS 2018 분석 결과, 중국 국가통계국의 절대 기준에 부합하는 도시 중산층은 전국 30.73%, 동북부 33.04%, 동부 32.33%, 중부 31.66%, 서부 25.62% 순으로 나타났다. 상대적 기준을 적용하면 전국 도시지역 중산층은 31.81%, 지역별로는 동북부가 37.89%, 서부 32.19%, 동부 32.04%, 서부27.68%로 나타났다. 이는 동부지역의 평균소득과 중위소득이 가장 높지만 소득 양극화가 큰 반면 동북부지역은 상대적으로 소득격차가 크지 않아 중위소득 집단에 속하는 비중이 크게 나타난 것으로 분석된다. 도시 중산층의 직업 중 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 것은 약 60%의 사영기업(私营企业)이었으며, 국유기업(国有企业)과 사업단위(事业单位)가 그 뒤를 이어16.51%, 11.87%를 차지하였다. 중산층의 교육수준은 최종학력 기준 중학교와 고등학교 졸업이 가장 높은 비중을 보였으며, 중산층의 학력은 전반적으로 동부지역이 다른 지역에 비해 낮은 수준으로 나타났다.

This paper analyzes the size and characteristics of the middle class in China using NBS(National Bureau of Statistics of China) data and CFPS(China Family Panel Studies) 2018. The size of the urban middle class is 30.73% and 33.04% in northeastern, 32.33% in eastern, 31.66% in central and 25.62% in western, based on an absolute definition of per capita income of 2000RMB-5000RMB per month. Using 75%-200% of the median income as the relative definition, the size of the middle class is 31.81% of China’s urban population and 37.89%, 32.19%, 32.04% and 27.68% in the northeast, central, eastern and western of China respectively. Although average income and median income in the eastern region are the highest, the size of the middle class is not larger than northeast. The share of jobs in private enterprises is almost 60%, followed by SOEs(state-owned enterprises) and government-sponsored institution with 16.51% and 11.87%. Members of the middle class have a middle school and high school diploma. The average educational attainment of middle class in eastern is lower than other regions.
