이 논문은 그레마스 기호학 방법론에 입각해 중국 TV드라마 <보보경심(步步驚心)>(2011)과 리메이크 한국 TV드라마 <달의 연인: 보보경심 려(麗)>(2016)의 서사를 분석하고 비교함으로써, 동일한 원천서사가 서로 다른 문화적 맥락에서 어떠한 변이를 일으키는지 살펴보는 데 목적을 둔다. 그레마스의 기호학은 캐릭터의 구체적인 행동을 중심으로 서사를 분석함으로써 그 정향성과 최종 의미를 파악하고, 장르 및 미디어의 차이에도 불구하고 동일한 원천서사가 서로 다른 미디어와 장르, 지역 등 상이한 환경에서 일으키는 변화를 파악하는 데 유효하다. 중국 TV드라마 <보보경심>은 이른바 ‘시공초월(穿越時空)’ 모티프를 중심으로 전개되는 판타지 로맨스 드라마의 전형적인 서사를 보여주는 한편으로, 드라마의 주요 사건들이 고대 중국의 시공간을 중심으로 진행되면서 전통문화를 스펙터클하게 전시하는 중국 고장극(古裝劇)의 장르 관습을 따른다. 반면, 리메이크작인 <달의연인: 보보경심 려>는 한국 TV드라마의 주류 장르인 멜로드라마의 장르관습을 강하게 반영하기 때문에, <보보경심>과 기본적으로 유사한 사건 전개를 보이면서도 캐릭터 사이의 감정적인 교류와 관계 변화에 중점을 두는 서사적 변이를 보인다. 고대의 시공간을 배경으로 삼으면서도 건축이나 복식, 소품 등의 세밀한 배치에 초점을 두기보다 캐릭터의 표정을 주로 담는 카메라 워킹 또한 이러한 장르적 특징을 반증한다. 즉 리메이크 한국TV드라마 <달의 연인: 보보경심 려>는 중국 TV드라마 <보보경심>과 동일한 원천서사를 차용했음에도 고유한 문화적 맥락에 따라 상당히 다른 서사 양상을 보이는 것이다. 그레마스 기호학은 이와 같은 중한 TV드라마의 서사적 차이를 비교적 객관적인 방식으로 통해 확인시켜 준다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the storytelling of the Chinese drama “Scarlet Heart(2011)” and the remake Korean drama “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo(2016)” based on Gremas’ semiotics methodology to see how the same source narrative mutates in different cultural contexts. Gremas’ semiotics are a valid methodology for grasping its orientation and final meaning by analyzing a narrative based on the specific behavior of the character. The Chinese drama “Scarlet Heart" shows the typical storytelling of a fantasy romance drama centered on the so-called “time-space transition(時空穿越)” motif, while following the genre convention of Chinese costume drama(古裝劇), which exhibits traditional culture spectacularly as major events of the drama revolve around ancient Chinese time and space. On the other hand, the remake, “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo,” strongly reflects the genre customs of melodrama, the mainstream genre of Korean dramas, showing storytelling that basically focuses on emotional exchanges between characters while showing the same event development as “Scarlet Heart.” Camera walking, which mainlycaptures the facial expressions of characters, rather than focusing on the detailed layout of architecture, clothing, and props, while setting ancient time and space as the background, also disproves this genre’s characteristics. In other words, the remake Korean drama “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo” has the same original script as the Chinese drama “Scarlet Heart,” but it has quite different storytelling characteristics depending on its unique cultural context. Graemas semiotics confirm this difference in the storytelling of Korean dramas in a relatively objective way.
