In recent years, one of the issues facing higher education is how and what we teach students at the university level. Also competence-based curriculum has received much attention in the field of education. As the conception of core competence draws more and more attention, many researchers have tried to define and diagnose core competences. Communication competence is one of the essential and transferable skills that are commonly required in performing one``s duties of work regardless of profession. The aim of this study is to diagnose the communication competence of college students and to seek for the direction of improvement in higher education. Specifically, this study examines the relations among college education, individuals’ communication skills, types of educational experiences affecting communication competence. Data from 733 college students participating in K-CESA (Korea Collegiate Essential Skills Assessment) was analyzed. Results suggest that communication competence is positively associated with GPA and academic years. These findings support that there is a value-added of college education in Korea. Furthermore, many students responded that extracurricular activities such as club, internship, part-time job are more helpful than taking regular classes for developing communication skills. Findings imply that it is required to apply the problem or situation based curriculum in higher education.

In today’s rapidly changing situations, studies of Korean Literature / Korean Language education area are facing a huge ordeal. Not only it faces demands of overall reorganization of the department’s curriculum and reestablishment of academic identity, but in some local universities it stands in a crossroads of maintenance or abolition. So far we have passed industrialization and post-industrialization rapidly and entered into information and technology centric society, however, the identity of academic discipline was firm, and the curriculum also maintained its constant frame for years. At some point it has reached the critical point. Therefore, although it may be late, it is meaningful to seek coping plans of this situation. The biggest topic in the information and technology centric society is Culture Technology. Also, the globalization and becoming multimedia of cultural industry is a powerful and inevitable trend. A cultural industry leading, higher value-added contents are ones that have a narrative, or topics that could become a daily gossip. The principle who could create and produce the most added value is the storyteller. Therefore it is necessary that, taking into account this situation, in the Korean Literature / Korean Language Education area modify major curriculum, develop and manage detailed curriculum subject. A person who is able to pull out and provide good topic, or a person who has a great discerning eye and pick out which would turn out to be worthy anywhere, or a person who specializes in planning and perform pitching and presentations that lure investment capital properly can receive the best hospitality. This study concerns and seeks for a breakthrough on developing and managing education programs, so that good storytellers, the excavators of great stories, would appear from young students of Korean Literature and Korean Language Education. In addition, this study presents few measures of subjects and composition of content that could be adopted in the aim of training a professional who could capture the public’s ambitions and preferences, and manufacture that into an entertainment.

In this paper, I tried to design the integration plan of grammar education on the basis of the Korean language education beings. Grammar education has accumulated research results. Integrated grammar education focus on the grammar of expression, Independent grammar education focus on the reproduction of classical educational contents. The purpose of the integration is the creation of value. It will be necessary to consider the purpose of integration of grammar education. Set "thinking, communicating, introspecting by the language" to the purpose, I tried to seek the solution of the actual. For that, this study presented specific measures such as understanding of compound words, communication(speaking that connect me to others), rationality and emotion, and realization(keeping the class diary, introspective writing about the life). The creation and understanding of compound words could lead to the verification of the effect of the ``creative use of language`` through the free conceptualization and interpretation of concept creation. The whole communication allows us to realize the actuality of speaking in our daily lives through the speaking that connects us to others and to experience the changes in the pattern of speaking, thereby making the learner realize the naturalness of communication. The translation allows us to grasp the principle of the Korean language formation through the change of jargon, and to have the mindset that cherishes our language. The whole communication also serves as the measure that stimulates the Korean language consciousness of the learner as part of liberal education. Moreover, the experience that leads to the rationality, emotion, and realization through the act of keeping the class diary and introspective writing will contribute to the formation of desirable humanity.

According to the 2009 revised national curriculum, new subject emerged in the category of Korean, ``Classics`` subject. But there are few argument about the origin of the subject or the character of it, and it is unusual in the view of the history of Korean education. Because the successful operating of the ``Classics`` stands on the basis of sufficient debating and inspection on it. For that, this thesis aims to search for the identity of ``Classics``, the new subject. First, this thesis searched for the context of the emerging of ``Classics in 2009 revised National Curriculum. In the 2009 revised National Curriculum, ``Classics`` reflects the main idea of the Curriculum, in other word, integration. Among the subjects in this Curriculum, ``Classics`` is the closest subject to the integration, because this subject is connected with the other subjects, and does not pursue a physical association with them. The next, we analyzed the contents of the subject to understand the identity of this subject through textbooks, which materialized the National Curriculum. The list of the classic which used in the textbooks can show the cognizance about the classic, and the learning activity in the textbooks reveals how the main idea of integration can be materialized. There are integration of understanding, application, criticism. Most people agree to the importance of classic, but many of them are apt to give up reading classic actually. It is the reason why the elaborated educational plan must be prepared, and this thesis ask more attention and debating about the education of classic.

This study aims to survey the Korean language textbooks and curriculums that reflected interpretive communication and to seek a direction of interpretive communication education. In spite of development of the perspective of interpretive communication education, it is not sufficiently complete. In the majority of cases, interpretation(or communication) afford the means of communication(or interpretation). The interpretive communication is a method of interpretation and interpretation itself in one. Therefore when educating interpretive communication, ‘one experience’ should be offered.

The article deals with learning transfer and instruction strategy in first year composition. Russell, Wardle, Downs critically analyzed the learning transfer of writing skills that students learned in their first year composition courses. The main teaching goals in FYC are that students learn about general writing skills and then apply their skills to new contexts and situations. But Russell, Wardle, Downs assert that these ways are wrong and not effective because writing should not be separated from real context and should not be generalized. Therefore, they believe what is gained and learned through FYC is not effective and does not transform into competent writing abilities for the student’s major. they suggest that the students should take writing theory education. Wardle and Downs insist ‘Writing about Writing’ education rather than Universal Academic Discourse. The article recommends revising teaching methods while maintaining the existing education style. Principles of the new teaching methods are as follows: First, students should recognize learning transfer clearly. The next principle is extracted in writing process and then applied to new situations. Lastly, the class assignment and class curriculum should have an appropriate sequence with each other. This article explains these principles in further detail.

This study aimed to emphasize the need to develop a national-level curriculum for adult literacy programs, especially focusing on writing area. Considering the need for adult writing programs increases rapidly while the response to the need is insufficient in various respects, it seems a well-organized national-level curriculum will be helpful in guiding adult writing programs to an appropriate direction and in providing educational and financial resources for the programs. As a part of the foundation of the curriculum development, this study explored current status of adult literacy programs in Korea, which showed the lack of the programs focusing on job literacy and advanced literacy. Also, adult literacy curriculums of the Province of Ontario and the UK were reviewed at the point that the two countries are running a relatively well-organized adult literacy programs. Several suggestions have been made for the next steps. First, discussions need to be made about the direction and the role of the curriculum, how to link the adult writing curriculum with elementary, secondary, or first-year writing curriculum. and how to link it with other literacy areas such as reading, listening and speaking. It is also recommended that the writing curriculum needs to consider the role of digital media.

The purpose of this study was to explore the aspect of meaning construction on writing from sources in the elementary school 5th grade class. In order to accomplish this, I made the students write after reading source texts which are related to writing task. I examined reading strategies and aspect of knowledge-transforming on writing from sources. This study focused on searching the reading strategies and aspect of knowledge-transforming on writing from sources rather than generalizing it. Based on the results of the research, there are differences in using the strategies and transforming the knowledge between high-level writer and low-level writer. Therefore, we need to educate writing from sources in the elementary school. I expect to examine writing from sources focused on elementary students.
