The purpose of this research aims, on the one hand, to find out how Spanish is usually perceived by learners of SFL/SL (Spanish as a foreign or a second language) in the Republic of Korea from a mono/pluricentric perspective and, on the other hand, to try to trace back that perception to the SFL/SL materials and formal education in this Asian country. In order to do so, a survey was conducted amongst around 700 students, mainly from universities, and the results clearly show an overwhelming perception of Spanish as a monocentric language by South Korean learners. Consequently, we will try to trace back the origin of such a widespread conception in South Korean textbooks, other teaching materials and the attitudes and approaches of teachers of SFL/SL, either native or non-native, to different varieties of Spanish in their teaching. In addition, special attention will be paid to the apparent confusion of some terms such as linguistic variety, standard language, neuter language, variety of instruction, linguistic model and some others, due to their great impact in the learners’ acquisition and understanding of the target language.

This study examines the way and real appearance of learning activities in Pre-Class and In-Class of flipped learning (Spanish-Korean translation class) and analyzes the learning satisfaction of learners. It is to get an answer about what is needed to increase the satisfaction of learners at each stage of flipped learning. As a research method, I realized 8 weeks of flipped learning and measured the satisfaction of students using questionnaire. The results of the study are as follows: In Spanish-Korean translation, flipped learning through discussion improves learner's satisfaction. Participants preferred text materials than video materials as Pre-class learning materials. For successful flipped learning, it is important for learners to participate actively and for professors to give a feedback and play the role of the instructor to facilitate interaction in the classroom.

This paper discusses certain syntactic issues involved in the Spanish passive and impersonal se-constructions in which it has long been noted that they share a number of syntactic and semantic properties, though the two constructions in question crucially differ from each other in verbal agreement. A good number of research on these constructions has focused on the position and syntactic status of the clitic se, which has received different types of analysis within the generative framework. In this paper I review first some previous works on the Spanish passive and impersonal se-constructions, and then I examine the preverbal position of the internal argument of the verb, arguing that it should be in A-position (i.e. in the specifier of TP) along with the clitic se, which, following Ormazabal & Romero (2018), is located in the same position as usual nominative subject of transitive verbs.

This study aims to reflect on the linguistic interaction in Spanish between doctors and patients. Specifically, we will analyze the discursive strategies available for doctors when they communicate a diagnosis to patients. To this end, the characteristics of institutional discourse will be taken and the methodology of analysis of institutional discourse proposed by Sorjonen and Drew(2000) will be applied. Once the linguistic particularities in communicating a diagnosis are discovered, we will attempt to apply the conversation framework for breaking bad news in medicine suggested by Buckman(1984, 1992) in order to verify not only the usefulness of that discursive model but also identify the linguistic realizations of each strategy. The results can offer an interesting point of view to understand a linguistic exercise of doctors and its socio-discursive implications.

This article studies Octavio Paz in Korean literary magazines, which have been published monthly o quarterly since after Korean War to the present. We investigated 15 types of magazines published during about 40 years, to study the introduction of Octavio Paz in Korea through mentioned magazines. We found more or less 100 articles published in deferent magazines. The results of this article are as follows: 1) Octavio Paz was first introduced in Korean magazines in 1975 with a poem, but after 2010 we can’t see Octavio Paz in these magazines; 2) We can read his articles in about 15 literary magazines; 3) Handaesihag has published most of his articles with about 41 articles based on El arco y La lira and Los hijos del limo; 4) Min Yong Tae is the one who presents more articles, Kim Hong Kun and Kim Eun Jung are those who translate most his works into Korean. According to this study we can find three special things: 1) among Octavio Paz articles, translations of poems and essays are slightly over half; 2) the Mexican poet has a very broad knowledge of the East with the Book of Changes and Buddhism; 3) El arco y la lira is the most important work.

This study analyzes the territorial and maritime dispute between Nicaragua and Colombia. The long dispute between two countries resulted in a trial at the International Court of Justice. The final verdict from the International Court of Justice created more tension between Colombia and Nicaragua due to the fact that Colombia did not accept the end result from the ICJ while Nicaragua welcomed it. By analyzing the case of territorial conflict between Nicaragua and Colombia, this study indicates that Latin American particularity of territorial conflicts, the small likelihood of full-scale war, derives not only from the fact that the conflict area contains natural resources or is of the strategical importance of the region but also from the fact that persistent historical dispute of boundaries provides incentives to the conflicts. In addition, this study offers a valuable lesson to Korean society regarding its on-going conflict over Dok-do with Japan.
