This study researches Park Ji-won(朴趾源)‘s thoughts of the cult of Guan-di(關帝) in ≪Yeolha-ilki(熱河日記)≫, reveals how it was shown in the form of literature. The Chosun(朝鮮) Mission to the shrines of Guan-di in Qing(淸) recalled the loyalty to Ming(明) in that place. But partly, they considered them negatively because these shrines have Buddhist propensity. Compared with the other records of travel to Qing(燕行錄), ≪Yeolha-ilki≫ looked at the shrines from much more various angles. Park described them just as they are, by so doing, brought out the meaning of them, as the popular area. Furthermore Park take note of the signboard hung on the shrine, of the record in <Hwanyeon-Dosung-rok(還燕道中錄)>, “the Confucius’ left side, the Buddha’s right side(左聖右佛)”, which was written by Kang-xi emperor(康熙帝), built up the discussion of the cult of Guan-di. The problems of “the Confucius’ left side” was discussed reasonably, with a heated and critical tone, while the image of “the Buddha’s right side” was revealed dimly by describing the scene of Seo-San(西山). Many records of travel to Qing pointed out the Buddhist propensity of the cult of guan-di, on the basis of that, they divided the shrines of Guan-yu(關王廟) in Chosun from the place of Guan-di in Qing. But Park did not stress such heretical sides of the cult of Guan-di. He thought that it was the folkways of Orang-kae(Babarians, 南蠻北狄) that regarded Guan-di as Confucius by worshiping the scholarship of him. In his ideas, it was the state of losing the basic value of China culture(中華). Park defined the core of “Orang-kae” by explaining the folkways of them which damaged the worth of Confucianism. It is not merely criticism of the cult of Guan-di in Qing, but also quiet criticism of that in Chosun on the basis of the loyalty to Ming and “Chonju-ron(尊周論)”. In the second half, by describing the landscape of Seo-san(西山), Park showed the image of Tibetan Buddhism. Provided that the essence in the folkways of Orang-kae was the state of losing the doctrines of Confucius, the most specific indicator that shows the folkways of them was Buddhist civilization. Instead of saying directly, Park assuaged escalation of tension in the first half, and left a lingering imagery of the cult of Guan-di, by depicting a scene of Seo-san. His ideas request that the intellectuals should reconsider the fervent cult of Guan-yu(關羽) in Chosun. Park was questioning that the politicians of Chosun have a proper demeanor, as they recalled the loyalty to Ming and tried to drive out Orang-kae in the shrines of Guan-yu.

This paper presents an attempt to “re-read” The Square by Choi In-hun and Portrait of the Days of Youth by Lee Mun-yeol from the perspective of bildungsromans. The plots and embodiments of subject of culture in both the novels are similar to those of German "Bildungsroman" and also exhibit enough Korean features. Culture builds characters as intellectuals and cultured individuals and thus becomes a criterion to show the cultural refinement of the upper class of the time. It also contains the policy and ruling ideology of the time. Subjects of culture ultimately seek after harmony with the world through an ego exploration process, but the results are sometimes unsuccessful. The processes and results can lead to the disillusive and romantic types of bildungsromans. While The Square by Choi In-hun is one of the representative works in the disillusive type of bildungsromans, Portrait of the Days of Youth by Lee Mun-yeol is one of the representative works in the romantic type of bildungsromans. In disillusive bildungsromans, the subjects of culture fail to narrow down the gap between the world and themselves and eventually face frustration. In romantic bildungsromans, the main characters secure their own worlds. In The Square, Lee Myeong-jun, who is capable of criticizing the contradictions of political and social reality, is one of the utmost intellectuals and cultured men of the time, but he has a feeling of disappointment due to the gap between his own ideal and the reality and chooses to take his own life. In Portrait of the Days of Youth, Lee Yeong-hun, on the other hand, strengthens his own artistic world through ego exploration and achieves harmony with the world. Here one cannot disregard the gender differences in culture building between male and female subjects of culture. While male subjects of culture build their culture through "books" both in disillusive and romantic bildungsromans, their female counterparts build their culture by the influence of male subjects rather than on their own. In The Square, the female subject is perceived as the object of abasement by the male subject rather than being embodied as a perfect cultured person. The bildungsroman by Lee Mun-yeol, however, shows different aspects from the bildungsroman by Choi In-hun, embodying female subjects of culture in two types. They either receive instructions for culture building from the male subject or become subjects of culture through their own abilities. The former become the objects of criticism to male subjects like in The Square, the latter are set as helpers that exert influences on the ego exploration process of male subjects. Those changes to female subjects are the results of accepting the changes to the consciousness of culture.

In the 21st century, colleges and universities around the nation are facing an urgent need to develop a standardized syllabus due to the differentiated lecture evaluations according to the number of assignments rather than the nature of performance tasks, the unequal distribution of subject content according to the majors and preferences of instructors, and the inequality of communication skill deviation among students because of the diversified distribution of freshmen among the domestic colleges and universities. The purpose of this study was to propose a new pedagogical plan for the “Talking and Writing” teaching material, which had been newly planned according to the changed lecturing method of “Talking and Writing,” one of the “basic” compulsory liberal arts courses for foreign students in Hanyang University. The study analyzed the existing teaching materials of Hanyang University and examined the current state of basic communication courses for foreign students and students in the non-liberal arts majors at other universities to overcome the limitations of the teaching material. The study then organized a standard syllabus to help the students of the 21st century evenly cultivate their basic communication capabilities and core essential capabilities and developed a teaching material for their practice. The teaching material first made the biggest contributions to the improvement of resource, information, and technology utilization capabilities among the foreign undergraduates. Secondly, it led the students to increase their self-management and interpersonal relationship capabilities and thus enhanced the communication abilities, one of the objectives of the syllabus. Finally, it was effective for promoting the core essential abilities needed from freshmen in Korean college.

This paper engages in a comparative analysis of the aspects of semantic expansion of the corpus of adjectives meaning ‘sweet’ in Korean and Chinese from the perspective of experientialism in cognitive linguistics. The study finds that the expansion of the meaning of ‘sweet-tasting’ is manifested in metonymy and metaphor. Among common features found in Korean and Chinese are expansions in terms of physical appraisal, aesthetic evaluation and psychological impression. A major difference is found in Chinese in which a more detailed division in target domain is developed concerning ‘甛(tian)’ and ‘甘(gan)’. Another noticeable difference concerns the sensory field for expansion: in Korean, the adjectives tend to expand into the olfactory and auditory senses whereas in Chinese the expansion is geared toward the auditory and visual senses. In addition, in Chinese the corpus of adjectives meaning ‘sweet’ is applied to human character and attitude, which is not found in Korean.

The Onomatopoeic verbs have the component of onomatopoeia, inclusive of derivational verb and derivational adjective. For instance, the derivational verbs that are derived by ‘-거리다/-대다, -이다, -하다’ fall under the purview of the Onomatopoeic verbs. The Onomatopoeic verbs demonstrate their properties of syntax and semantics in sentence that they are comprised in. Therefore the onomatopoeic verbs depend on the other constituents of sentence. A large numbers of the Onomatopoeic verbs have the use of an intransitive verb and a transitive verb at the same time. It follows from what has been said thus far that the Onomatopoeic verbs that are inclusive of derivational verb and derivational adjective are not the ergative or the zero derivative but the use of an intransitive verb and a transitive verb at the same time. I have reviewed the difference between the verb of phonomimes and the verb of phainomimes, There is not a distinct difference between the two. For example, the sentences that is affiliated with their verb appeared in the use of an intransitive verb, the use of a transitive verb, the use of an intransitive verb and a transitive verb at the same time. But on closer examination it is found that the verbs of phonomimes that are appeared the derivation of ‘-이다’ have the use of an intransitive verb and a transitive verb at the same time only.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate phonological characteristics in children’s poems of Mokwol Park on the basis of syllable structure. That is, I divide syllables of poem into onset, nuclear, and coda, then observe which phonemes are used frequently. The study about children’s poems of Mokwol Park sufficiently obtains a substantial argument in view of the literary theory. However, it is insufficient for the argument of linguistic method. Poetry is based upon the relationship of similarity among sounds. Sounds perceived as similar to one another create acceptable rhythm pairs. Because sounds are hierarchically arranged in languages, patterns in poetry can reveal the priority order within this hierarchy. So, with respect to the phonological patterns of Korean, I have analyzed all of Mokwol Park’s works. At last I found the priority order about children’s poems of Mokwol Park within sound hierarchy. Most common are syllables with onset and no coda pairs. With respect to acoustic features, the most frequent syllable utilize the [+sonorant] feature. This pattern remains consistent over time.
