The Korean version of Hunminjeongeum, (below ‘KVOH’), was a translated book from Hunminjeongeum written in Chinese sentence by King Sejong in 1446. Thus its content consisted of the Preface, message of King Sejong, and the Main Writing, showed the sounds of the 23 initial letters, and the 11 final letters, and explained the methods of usage of those letters. The text of KVOH was presented in order of Gugyul sentences, Annotations and Translated Korean sentences. Gugyul sentences divided Chinese sentences to phrases, and added gugyeol after each divided phrases. Annotations explained lexical meanings and grammatical functions of the Sino-Korean for translating its Chinese sentences to Korean. And translated Korean sentences was made by reference of Gugyeol sentences and Annotations, wrote in the new writing system. In addition, the sound of the Sino-Korean was also presented in the new writing system too. The official title of the KVOH was Sejong Eoje Hunminjeongeum, including ‘Sejong Eoje’ to Hunminjeongeum along with annotations accordingly. As a result, even though there is a change in print-cutting frame at the first page, the title at the final page of this version was still printed as ‘Hunminjeongeum’. Also, the explanation of letters for writing of the Chinese sibilant sounds has been supplemented at the last of the KVOH, in this part, the orthography was different from the other part. From these heterogeneous nature within the text of the KVOH, we deduced that there was an original version before the KVOH.

This paper focuses on ‘sarcasm’ and the role prosodic qualities, sound length, intonation, pause, play in determining and understanding the meaning of sarcastic expressions. In order to objectively analyze the prosodic qualities of ‘sarcasm’, this paper, using Pratt, studies three factors that contribute to the meaning and understanding of sarcastic expressions, sound length, intonation and pause which are described as ‘expressive’ in this paper. Sound length which is most diverse and plays the greatest role out of the three in determining the meaning of a sarcastic expression, has been sorted based on word-initial position and word-internal position which need separations from lexical length and necessary length. In case of intonation, marked intonation of sentence types was found. Also, there were cases where the speaker expressed his or her attitude through intonation with a negative tone. For pause, physiological pause occurred unnecessarily in the middle of speaking. Pause, by creating a vacuum in the middle of a sentence, creates tensions which has the effect of highlighting the end of sentences. The longer the pause, the bigger the emphasis placed on the ensuing message was.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the Characteristics of the Korean language revealed in John Ross’s translated Bible in pre-modern Korea. Rev. John Ross (1842-1915) was a Scottish missionary dispatched to China in the late 19th Century. He had translated the Bible into Korean from 1882 to 1887. During this period of time he had revised his work for number of times with the help of Korean language assistants from the Northern area of Korea. In this study, we will discuss the following issues: what language characteristics are revealed in Ross’s Versions of Luke; how the vocabulary in the editions of Ross’s Book of Luke (1882 and 1883) were revised; and what was the revision principles between each edition are. When 예수셩교 누가복음젼셔 was published in 1882, it was criticized by Horace G. Underwood (1859-1617) the American missionary. He criticized its provincial dialects which were different from the form of central dialects. However, when we investigate the vocabulary in the versions, the results were quite different from the criticisms at that time. The provincialism was revised and reduced in the subsequent published versions as the Northern dialects were replaced by central dialects. For the analysis we have investigate the ‘t-palatalization’ diffusion rate and ‘vowel-rounding’ in each edition.

I borrowed the title of this paper from Virginia Woolf’s essay about Ivan Turgenev, “the Novels of Turgenev”. Woolf’s several essays had read and interpreted many classic writers in a Woolfian way. In particular, she expressed great interest and respect for Russian writers, one of whom is Ivan Turgenev. Although he is known as a 19th-century realist writer, Woolf understands him as the starting point of a comtemporary writer with dual attributes. Jessie Matz also uses “literary impressionism” to describe Woolf, Russian and other writers, “Impression” did not intend only objective sight but subjectivity, a duality of real seeing and personal vision. Related dualities followed, as impressionism could seem to deliver appearance or reality; to require innocence or sophistication; to favor life or art, the natural or the aesthetic. Woolf often set up a parallel relationship between binary oppositeness such as form and content, the private and the public, major character and minor character, etc. Then she freely crossed their boundaries and translated a certain problem in the one world unto that of the other. Of course this ambivalence in Woolf and Turgenev does not resolve the real problem of war, nor does it conclude the tragic troubles of all human beings. It does enable us, however, to broaden our vision and envisage a possible common life.

This thesis aims at examining the relationship of humans and animals, revealed in the two works of E. B. White, one of the renowned writers in children’s literature.: Charlotte’s Web and The Trumpet of the Swan. Beginning with the explanation of animal fantasy, the relationship between children and animals, space, the use of instruments, morality and the sense of responsibility were examined. In Charlotte’s Web the expansion of space was examined in relation with the runt, Wilbur. From the pigsty, Wilbur’s birthplace, his living space is moved to Fern’s kitchen, and when Wilbur grows up, the space is moved to the barn, where fantasy-like events take place. Despite the closed, limited space of a barn, the events which occur there play the role of making it an important space. It decides the matter of life and death. Charlotte’s Web began with the question, “Where’s Papa going with that ax?” and it creates an atmosphere of tension, while dealing with life and death. A barn is an important place where the life and death of animals co-exist. The Trumper of the Swan has the same structure and it deals with the relationship of Sam and Swan Luis, who has a speech disorder. In contrast with Fern, Sam directly makes relationships with animals. On the other hand, it is more accurate to say that animals have entered into the space of human beings. Luis seems independent and self-reliant, dealing with his handicap. Sam is a good helper in leading Luis. Though they look alike in structure, they show a difference in human-animal relationships. In Charlotte’s Web, for example, humans enter into the world of animals. In The Trumpet of the Swan, however, animals come into the world of humans. The entrance of human into the animal world and vice versa can be interpreted as the intention of White not to distinguish humans from animals. He lived close to animals, away from the city. In nature he could observe and watch animals. Based on his experience, he wrote Charlotte’s Web and The Trumpet of the Swan, which are still loved in children’s literature until now. In the course of dealing with the crisis protagonist animals and how they solve their limits, humans and nature are not divided nor separated from each other. The fact that they co-exist and help one another is in agreement with ecological life which human beings support in modern times.
