It is currently well accepted that collocation needs to be taught explicitly. Various experimental research shows that it is one of the most recalcitrant areas in learning L2 languages. Students demonstrate difficulties with it even after achieving a high level of second language competence, contrary to the prevalent assumption that it will be naturally acquired when learners have a certain level of grammatical and lexical competence. This paper suggests one method of teaching collocations with the case of the adjective rich. It demonstrates how the adjective rich extends its meaning and collocates by metaphor, suggesting that teachers` awareness of the cognitive principle of meaning/collocational extension increases students` ability to recognize word combinations in a more flexible way.

This study concerns the meaning generated from a particle -nun in Korean combined with a prosodic accent and the characteristic pragmatic behavior of the sentences containing it. In my previous research, I have argued that the alleged Topic marker -nun generates an existential presupposition of a contrastive alternative. In this paper, I will illustrate how the existential presupposition enables the utterances containing -nun obtain different felicity values from the canonical case marked ones in various pragmatic contexts. Speaker`s presupposition and common ground (Stalnaker1972, 1974) and accommodation (Lewis1979) will be adopted to explain the felicity differences between -nun and a case marker in the aspect of the amount of information obtained from the existential presupposition, not in the aspect of information structure differences.

This study aims to investigate English reading strategy used by Korean university students and the relationship between English reading strategy use and reading proficiency. The participants were 131 Korean university students who were studying English at four different universities in Korea. They responded to the questionnaires concerning techniques that students use when reading academic materials in English and took an English reading comprehension test. The findings indicated that (a) students tended to use global and support reading strategies moderately, while using problem-solving strategies with high frequency and that (b) there were significant differences in overall reading strategy use between high and low proficiency readers. Pedagogical implications for strategy instruction were suggested.

A writing system is a way of writing a language. The research in this field has concentrated on alphabetic writing systems. Also, the written language has been considered as a secondary system of spoken language. However, the writing system(also called graphemics) has recently been regarded as a linguistic system in its own right. Graphemics deals with properties which are not found in spoken language and a structural description of how sound system and writing system are related to each other. Graphemics includes all the ways which write a particular language. On the other hand, orthography is mainly concerned with the normative writing system. That is to say, an orthography is established as a prescriptive rule at a certain time among the feasible writing systems. Within the context of modern times, there was a great variety in the language forms; any dialectical, stylistic and ``free`` variations in the Age of Information. These are all the main objects of Korean graphemics. Among them, one of the forms could be established as a Korean orthography within the limits of possibility. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the correlation between Korean graphemics and Korean orthography.

The study was designed to investigate how collaborative writing techniques influence on English writing products of Korean college students and the improvement of their English writing abilities, compared to an individual writing opportunity. 54 college students (48 Korean students and 6 international students) taking two parallel in-tact English composition classes offered by a national university participated in this study. The participants, depending on which section of the writing course they registered, were asked to work on writing an English essay either collaboratively or individually, as three writing phases, pre-, during-, and post-writing step with a variety of activities, proceeded. Three major research instruments (students` written texts, survey, and interview) were employed to answer three research questions on the contribution of collaborative writing to their English writing improvement. The findings were that collaborative writing techniques were helpful for EFL college students not only to achieve knowledge of English, in particular, usage of grammar and punctuation but to develop their communication skills and English writing strategies even though the study failed to demonstrate that students writing their essay collaboratively produced better written texts than those writing individually. Lastly, pedagogical implications for college English composition courses and suggestions for future studies were also provided.

In current literature Saussure`s distinctive contributions to modern structural linguistics are well known, but Baudouin`s contribution was little known until the books and articles on his study appeared recently. Although Baudouin and Saussure were essentially on the same course of linguistic inquiry, i.e., reformulation of linguistic elements, they developed their own views on language and solutions to the linguistic problems. Baudouin opened a new perspective, together with Saussure, that comparison is not an end but a means in the study of language. His purpose in the study of language was to seek the general laws and forces conditioning both the diachronic and synchronic variations of language. In this paper I demonstrate Baudouin`s significance in phonological work and discuss his linguistic views on general linguistics and his major achievements focusing on the following questions: (1) the distinction between statics and dynamics; (2) the conception of the phoneme; (3) the observation on sound processes.

This paper revisits Yoon and Lee (2005)`s two types of NP coordination constructions (Type A and B). Type A represents sentences where Case (Nom, Acc, or Gen) is marked only on the final conjunct and non-final conjuncts carry the nominal conjunctive suffix -(k)wa. In Type B, Case-markers occur on all conjuncts and kuliko occurs between the conjuncts. In this paper, we propose that the symmetrically Case-marked noun phrase coordinations are not NP coordinations, contra a lexicalist approach by Cho (2008), but KP coordinations where initial conjunct licenses a null predicate. In other words, while asymmetrically Case marked NP coordinations (Type A, hereafter) are genuine NP coordinations, symmetrically Case marked coordinations (Type B, henceforth) are larger verbal/sentential coordinations. Other than syntactic and interpretive evidence already provided by Yoon and Lee (2005), we provide phonetic evidence, showing that the initial conjunct of Type B is followed by a relatively longer duration of pause than is caused by an orthographic space.

The current study investigates the characteristics of speech disfluencies (i.e., silent and filled pauses) produced by Korean learners of English. Unlike previous studies that focused on speech disfluencies in read English speech by Korean talkers (e.g., Lee, 2007; Yom, 2006; Cha, 2005), this study gathered English disfluency data uttered by Korean speakers in a more naturalistic setting referred to as the Diapix task in the literature (Kim et al., 2011; Van Engen et al., 2010; Baker & Hazan, 2010) where two talkers were involved in a spontaneous dialogue to achieve a common goal. One central finding of the current study is that Korean learners of English produce pauses to a greater extent when their conversation partner is another non-native speaker of English than when their partner is a native speaker of English. We put forward a hypothesis that can account for this finding--pauses serve as a facilitatory perceptual cue for Korean learners of English, independent from their more typical role as repairing errors (Levelt, 1983; Kormos, 1999). Additional implications that the current findings have for the studies of speech disfluencies in foreign-accented conversational English are discussed.

The subordinate clause in Old English (OE) exhibits 5 different surface word orders such as AUX-V-O, AUX-O-V, V-AUX-O, O-AUX-O, O-V-AUX with regard to the positions among AUX, V and O but the order V-O-AUX is not found. It is proposed in this article that OE subordinate word orders are derived via the application of Object Shift and V(AUX)-raising on the assumption that the base order of Old English is uniformly AUX/V-O. The assumption is based on the Linear Correspondence Axiom (LCA), which requires linearization between two syntactic objects by asymmetric c-commanding. In the meantime, the V-O-AUX order is denied by the FOFC that rules out the possibility of a head-final phrase dominating a head-initial phrase.

The additive [n] has appeared in the formation of compound nouns, derived words and phrases in the contemporary Korean. In these cases, the surfaced [n] neither originally exists nor is inserted during their derivative process. I suggest that this phonological phenomenon is caused by the sonority meditation by changing [j] to [?] within the prosodic phrase. Because the initial [j] of a following second syllable is not a vowel, [j] is changed to [?] by decreasing its sonority in order to satisfy the syllable contact constraint. Another motivation of the surfaced [n] is found at the boundary of the following word with initial /i/. The phonetic motivation of the inserted [n] is explicitly not clear and [n] also does not appear in front of the nominative case ``i`` and designated case ``i-``. We notice that /i/-initial Sino-Korean did not represent [n] insertion. Therefore /j/ and /i/ undergo different phonological processes. Historically, as the domain of initial sound law was extended to the non-initial position within a prosodic phrase, this restructuring process was gradually expanded through many kinds of words and so both conservative forms and innovative forms coexist.
