The purpose of this paper is to present the pragmatic conditions on the particle construction. In transformational grammar particle constructions were determined by particle movement. But particle movement was not enough to account for the particle construction. The following pragmatic conditions on the particle construction were found in this paper. Direct objects are preceded by particles in the following: (1) when direct objects carry new information (2) when direct objects are important. (3) when direct objects were mentioned long before in discourse (4) when direct objects are fairly unfamiliar. Direct objects are followed by particles in the following: (1) when direct objects carry given information (2) when direct objects are not important (3) when direct objects were mentioned shortly before in discourse (4) when direct objects are familiar (5) when direct objects are expected by verbs. In conclusion, particle constructions are subject to information structure. (Mokwon University)

The primary aim of this paper is to provide the teaching method of Korean deixis to foreign learners. Deixis means the word that refers the object with grammatically simple form when it is indicated again. And there are five types in deixis. They are distance deixis, reflexive deixis, universal personal deixis, speaker-hearer deixis and others. In order to teach Korean deixis efficiently we should put an emphasis on many aspects. They are selecting the essential deixis, teaching according to the levels, giving the information or contents of the vocabulary and analyzing the meaning of the lexical mentioned above. The purpose of the study is twofold: first, to analyze the syntactic and semantic nature of the Korean case alternation between the dative case marker ``-e`` and the accusative case marker ``-lul`` when cooccurring with particular verbals denoting result, situation, movement, second, to introduce the research results into the theoretical framework of HPSG. The research result reveals that, in case of ``result or situational verbs`` occurring together with a patient subject, their complement arguments are assigned with the dative case marker ``-e`` only if they possess the thematic role, [LOCATIVE]. By contrast, when the complements possess the role of [THEME], their case marker is realized as the accusative suffix ``-lul``. The research also reveals that, in the case of ``movement verbs``, two thematic roles, [LOCATIVE] and {THEME], are simultaneously required in order for the ``-e/lul`` case alternation to be permitted to their complements. There have been many approaches and methods in foreign language education. Many recent studies have introduced approaches interfaced with cognitive linguistics. The one of them is studies on the roles of conceptual metaphors in the foreign language education. A metaphor is not a language only for poems or novels any more. Since Lakoff and Johnson`s work, Metaphor We Live By (1980), metaphors are viewed as aids for better understanding of everyday conversations. And, there have been many studies recently to show how the metaphors may work in the language education. This study introduces conceptual metaphors and metonymies we often use for better understanding everyday and suggests how the metaphors and motonymies can be introduced and used in language classrooms to facilitate language learning. The purpose of this paper is to provide some new approach on some properties of somewhat puzzling V-ing constructions like English. V-ing nominalisations present a well-known problem for categorial specification in the lexicon. It has mainly been focused on solving the twin properties(DP/VP) of V-ing. For the new analysis of V-ing constructions, I show how the difference between Poss-ing and Ing-of constructions derives from the representation of argument structure. Based on light verb which assigns accusative case and introduces the external argument, I present the hypothesis that Ing-of constructions contain a defective light verb because they have an external argument position although accusative case is not observed on the object. This study considers the issue of corpus work in relation to the teaching and learning of business English. The aim of this paper is to examine typical lexical and collocational features in various texts for and about business by building and analysing a corpus of written business English. The key method of analysis is that of keyness, semantic association and semantic prosody, which show that lexical items in business English corpus have certain characteristics which distinguish business reports from general English. After a brief review about business English and ESP teaching and learning, the main research is presented to show that corpus-based analysis about business English reveals (semi-)technical lexis and strong tendencies for lexical relations. The purpose of this paper is to explain cross-linguistic differences in VP-preposing among English, German, Korean, and Japanese. As a traditional definition, VP-preposing in English preposes the verb and its objects, leaving behind auxiliary verb. However, Hoji(l989) and Cho(200l) suggest that Korean and Japanese VP-preposing is a scrambling process, moving a VP out of the complement position of the expletive verb Do to a sentence-initial position. However, all the languages do not behave syntactically. That is, in Korean and Japanese ergative and unaccusative verbs cannot be fronted; English allows all VPs including ergative and unaccusative verbs to be fronted; In German, subject of passives and unaccusatives can be a part of VP-preposing, but subject of unergatives cannot. These asymmetries seem to mean VP-preposing is not a single syntactic process. As an alternative, this paper assumes that VP-preposing is distinguished into two distinctive processes: topicalization and focalization, suggesting Korean and Japanese VP-preposing is topicalization while English and German VP-Preposing is focalization in which the fronted constituents are focused as a thetic interpretation. This paper presents an acoustic analysis of English vowel /I/. The vowel /I/ in word-final open weak syllables, so-called happy vowel, shows a tendency to undergo happy-tensing when compared to the reference vowel /I/. It is discussed whether vowel lengthening that occurs due to phonetic environments results in vowel tensing. It will be shown that happy vowel is lengthened and tensed whereas the lengthened /i/ is not more tensed. I argue that variations of happy-tensing be characterized by the different degree of vowel fronting and raising. Happy-tensing is investigated acoustically in the interview speech of six native speakers of English. Further, it is argued that the speakers of Canadian English show greater degree of happy-tensing than those of American English do. (Chungnam National University)

The English wh-cleft constructions, which consist of three parts, i.e. precopular wh-cleft clause, copula, and postcopular XP, show a peculiar behavior in number concord between the copula and the subject. The copula does not always appear to agree with the singular clausal subject, nor just with the postcopular XP. The copula is predominantly singular, but not always. Also, it can be plural before a plural NP, but not always. To explain this puzzling number concord phenomenon, we argue that the copula disjunctively agrees with the missing element within the precopular clause and the postcopular XP, and that this peculiar characteristic is attributed to the lexical properties of whatWH-CLEFT and beWH-CLEFT. Such a lexical specification-based treatment of number concord conforms to the lexicalist tradition of HPSG. (Chosun College of Science and Technology)

This study aims to analyze the indirect speech act presented in the discourse of Hotel and Tourism English. In the course of language interaction, the speaker usually try to respect the hearer`s psychological attitude in hotel and tourism English. Both the speaker and the hearer usually use the indirect speech act in which the speaker conveys non-literal meaning to the hearer. Hotel & Tourism English discourse shows that the imperative utterances represent the non-literal meaning, request, suggestion, threat, and hope, the interrogative utterances represent suggestion, confirm, greeting, and request, and the declarative utterances represent request, suggestion, confirm, and apology.
