Social Network Service(SNS) is widely used these days and many people tend to communicate with each other on SNS. Therefore, it can be expected that when communicating on Twitter, people use different politeness strategies related to ‘face’ in different contexts. This paper aims to analyze what type of politeness strategies are used in English Twitter threads. Two American politician Twitter feeds were chosen for the research and 411 tweets were analyzed in terms of tweet context and the tweets were divided into five categories. In each category, each tweet was analyzed based on Brown & Levinson(1987)`s politeness strategies. The highest tweet messages are in regard to praise and expressing support and opposing and criticising was next. The results show that people used the positive politeness strategy more when praising and expressing support. On the other hand, the negative politeness strategy was the highest strategy in opposing and criticising categories. From the research, the results shows that it is difficult to engage in Face Threatening Acts(FTA) even though people have relative anonymity when communicating on-line through SNS.

The objective of this paper is firstly to find how the students in Korea respond to teachers` and students` L1 use in the classroom. Secondly, it investigates the most effective use of the L1 in relation to the students` needs and their English acquisition. The study is based on a survey of a group of students (319 students) studying at D-university in Korea. The data was analysed statistically using SPSS software. The analysis of the data reveals that the switching to L1 is common in the English only class of D-university Furthermore, the limited and judicious use of the first language in the EFL class does not seem to hinder the students` ability to learn English but rather could be helpful for the teaching and learning processes.

This paper aims to survey the aspects of the case and to trace how the English case system and adpositions relate each other based on the universal typology. It is observed that each language has a unique case system, but we are able to find out some meaningful generalizations on the basis of the typological approach. Languages can be classified accusative, ergative, tripartite and neutral languages as how each related to the S(subject), A(agent), and O(object). There are three different ways to designate the case; by word order, NP-marking and cross-reference. In NP-marking, either declension or adposition is used to mark the case. Since it is observed that using adpositions is the most frequent way to mark the case, we can find the significant universality: adpositions have various functions not only of marking cases but of linking words, modifying nouns and adverbs. Adpositions are originally derived from content words such as nouns, verbs and adverbs. Each adposition had its own concrete meaning, but as time goes by, it has extended to have abstract meaning.

The purpose of this paper is to make it clear where an inverted locative or directional PP moves in inverted locative PP constructions. The main points of previous studies can be summarized into the two following questions: Does the inverted PP move to TP-Spec or not? and where is the left peripheral position of the inverted PP if it moves to the left of TP-Spec? This paper has shown that the disputes on these questions are attributed to too simple a generalization of different structures due to the verb types. With a lot of empirical evidence I have illustrated that the most adequate description about the PP position can be achieved by positing three different positions (TP-Spec, FocP-Spec, and TP-adjoined position) according to three classes of verbs (be, unaccusative, unergative).

This study examined variation in the countability of mass nouns like information and knowledge among the EFL learners in Korea and Japan which belong to the Expanding Circle. The countability of nouns is frequently cited as a marker of nativeness which distinguishes Inner Circle norms in TESOL from the Outer and Expanding Circle usage. The study inspected the countability of mass nouns in a corpus of cross-cultural communication between EFL learners and compared the results with the data from the other varieties of English used in the Outer and Expanding Circles. Based on the analysis, the study evaluated potential causes of variation, investigating differences between Outer and Expanding Circles. This study notes there is notable and widespread countable use of nouns that are generally non-count in Inner Circle Englishes, but such usage is highly infrequent overall. There appears to be greater variation in the Outer than the Expanding Circle. Based on the results, some implications about lexico-grammatical variation in lingua franca use of English and the plurilithic nature of English.

This paper critically reviews the salient features of AGREE advocated in late Minimalism. It is to show that AGREE-based grammar is doomed to suffer from the shortcomings in both conceptual and empirical points of view. Conceptually, the argument that AGREE is a more economical operation than MOVE does not fit with the hypothesis that both AGREE and MOVE is a virtually conceptually necessary(VCN) operation. Empirically, expletive construction, a classic example for AGREE-based analysis, is to be recapitulated by MOVE-based analysis. That is, it is to show that AGREE-based analysis cannot account for some prominent characteristics of there-construction.

The purpose of this study is to explain the distribution of Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) in Korean based on the veridicality theory. Zwarts(1995) and Giannakidou(1999, 2001, 2006) provide an account for English NPIs by making use of the notions ‘verticality’. ‘anti-verticality’, and ‘non-verticality’. While assuming that this line of approach is on the right track, this paper attempts to analyze the distribution of ‘amwu-N-to’, ‘amwu-N-(i)lato’ and ‘amwu-N-(i)na’. I claim that ‘amwu-N-to’ is licensed in anti-vertical contexts, whereas ‘amwu-N-(i)lato’ is licensed in non-veridical contexts, and ‘amwu-N-(i)na’ is licensed even in vertical contexts as well as non-veridical and anti-veridical contexts.

Kim (2012) claims that if non-contrasting propositions are connected with the connective nuntey ‘while’, the sentence becomes infelicitous since that connective is an adversative conjunction. However, there may be examples which are also infelicitous when the coordinator- ko ‘and’ is used instead of nuntey. In this vein, Kim`s (2012) grammaticalization that the propositions A and B connected with nuntey should have contrasting meaning is not an if-and-only-if condition for the use of the contrastive nun-marked element. Contrastive nun-marked elements are only used in the position where contrastiveness is assigned when two non-contrasting propositions are connected with the connective ciman/nuntey or even with the coordinator ko ‘and’. The contrastive nun-marked sentence-initial element in the subsequent clause of the ciman/nuntey construction induces the sentence to hold contrasting propositions. The contrastive nun-marked element should be in the Spec of a phase (Spec of vP or CP) where the output effect of contrastiveness is assigned.

This paper investigates the loanword adaptation patterns of Russian plosives in Korean. To discuss this issue, we observe the loan adaptation patterns of Russian in Seon-bong newspaper (from 1922 to 1937). As well documented in the literature (Avery and Idsardi 2001, Ahn and Iverson 2004), Korean employs a three-way obstruent system showing lax, aspirated and tense contrasts, whereas the plosive series in Russian is characterized by a different two-way contrast, i.e., plain voiceless, and voiced. There are certain common characteristics and differences among these two languages; Russian belongs to a [voice] language whereas Korean belongs to a [aspiration] language. Thus, Russian has the voicing distinction which Korean lacks. In this paper, we will propose typological adaptation in loanword contexts. More specifically, we first argue that the phonemic vs. phonetic mapping patterns can be decided based on the laryngeal typology of the target and the recipient languages. Then, we will show how the phonetic factors such as VOT and F0 function for the loanword adaptation, depending on the laryngeal typology. We also investigate the modern adaptation (The regulation for Russian loan from The National Institute from Korean Academy) patterns of Russian loanwords in Korean.

The purpose of the study is to investigate feedback preference to student reflection incorporated in Korean university English foreign language (EFL) writing classes. It explored how they responded to self-reflection questions when integrated into their regular lessons. The goal of this research is to help Korean students become more dynamic reflective thinkers and to increase their learner autonomy. A student reflection questionnaire on self- reflection and autonomy was administered as well as a questionnaire on student perception of composition, unit tests and follow-up student interviews on the results of the questionnaire. Summarized are the impacts of student reflections on learning and autonomy, as well as the findings on the strengths and weakness of incorporating and using reflection in the Korean EFL university writing classroom. The findings from Spring 2013 indicate that students would benefit from participating in reflection to facilitate autonomous learning.
