The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of incorporating dictogloss and dialogue journal activities into middle school writing class with regard to student writing ability and attitude toward English writing. The study was implemented with 95 students in the experimental group drawn from 194 students in total. Study participants were assigned different writing activities and homework every week for a period of 15 weeks. Pre and post writing tests were administered in order to gauge the effectiveness of the dictogloss and journal writing activities. Furthermore, pre and post training questionnaires were provided to the students in order to ascertain whether students experienced a change in attitude toward English writing and cooperative learning. To evaluate students` writings, an analytical scoring method was used. It consists mainly of four categories: content, organization, grammar & vocabulary, and mechanics. Results indicate that the dictogloss and dialogue journal writing activities are effective in developing writing skills and encouraging students to write in English, while promoting positive attitudes toward English learning. These writing experiences facilitated an invaluable opportunity for authentic practice for the learner and lowered anxiety by providing freedom of subject matter and encouraging collaboration. Blake`s advocacy of human desires may be said to have somewhat political implications when it is read in the context of the contemporary discourse on sex and population. Malthus, in his famous Essay that triggered nationwide sex panic, suggested moral virtue and the restraint from marriages as a powerful check on increasing population. He even denies the poor the right to subsistence, blaming their poverty on their moral laxity. Francis Place, severely attacking his prejudice, contradicts all of his assertions in detail from the view point of the poor laboring class. In Every Woman`s Book Richard Carlile, on the other hand, positively asserts the value and importance of sexual love. Then he turns his attack on the prohibitive moral code of Christianity that has denigrated love into a fancied sin. He attributes prostitution and other sexual perversions to the mistaken notions of chastity and its hypocrisies. Blake seems to have in mind these contemporary discourses on sex when he emphatically reiterated his condemnation of reason and eulogy on desires. In this respect, Blake`s indignation over sexual repression should be considered to be a way of expressing his outcry for political emancipation on the part of the impoverished class. In this paper I track down some layers of violence embodied in Saturday. What is under scrutiny is Baxter, the vengeful thug in London street. Then I move to discuss how McEwan criticizes the biological determinism which reinforces the division between the classes, races and cultures in the multi-cultural era in London. In many ways, Saturday is a fictional response to global violence such as 9/11 New York terror and Iraq war. McEwan`s primary concern centres around how to contain violence and dissolve discrimination. By doing so, he hopes to establish a peaceful world. This leaves us to meditate on how to confront “the Other”. In conclusion, I argue that Ian McEwan is a very ethical writer in the sense that he takes the views that the politics of exclusion and discrimination of “the Other” is not humane. By addressing the need to have a sympathetic capacity towards “the Other”, he wants to let us speculate a better world. The application of some key terms and views taken from Zizek to an analysis of McEwan`s novels is particularly viable and rewarding. (Chungnam University)

This paper explores Theresa Hak Kyung Cha`s experimental poems, visual poems coupled with moving images, which are tools to express her identity as Korean American. Writer, artist, video artist, and filmmaker, Teresa Hak Kyung Cha`s avant-garde, multi-genre visual poems challenge the monolithic, linear, and logic-driven meaning that is produced by languages by using experimental poetic techniques. Cha also tries to combine social contents that History embraces and poetic forms in her poems to express her in-between identify as a Korean American. For her, History is a record of the Western dominant class and has suppressed the voice of underprivileged groups such as Asian Americans. Therefore, Cha tries to reveal their authentic voice through their personal records or memories, which have been ignored by History. (Berkeley Christian College and Seminary)

This paper is to examine the reason for writing “Hapworth 16, 1924” with the epistolary by Salinger. In the work main character Seymour Glass didn`t do well with unspiritual people and withdraw from the everyday reality of the Camp in 1924, since he has super soul as a genius. To reveal his thoughts to us Salinger needed a logic, and he wrote “Hapworth” using the long epistolary. The preface in “Hapworth” suggests the possibility which Buddy copied it as short tale, though its originality was written by Seymour. It contains more negative information of Seymour`s personality than other Salinger`s works, because Buddy did not want to write on negative view of Seymour`s personality depicted by Seymour`s point of view. Accordingly we can know it becomes the confession of Salinger`s Oriental religion written by the epistolary, though “Harpworth”, Seymour`s long letter, is private and immediate about his life in the Camp. For Lacan, desire cannot be satisfied even when our demands are met. The lack of being is the cause of constructing love-illusions. The act of love is caught up in fantasies. Morel, Gertude, Paul, Miriam and Clara fall in love in Sons and Lovers, but their relationships are found out as self-deceptions. Their love has been mediated through the ``object a`` without which love is impossible at all. Each of lovers is positioned at an ``object a``, promising the fulfillment of being by their Imaginary integration. However, this is a mis-recognition; in love, there is only the signifying process of metonymic displacement. Furthermore, the love-illusions are manipulated by the sexual differences through ``all`` and ``not-all`` or ``Having the Phallus`` and ``Being the Phallus``. Men and women are camouflaged according to their gender roles under the structural effects of the Phallus. This kind of sexual relationship inevitably ends in a disaster. Sons and Lovers unveils an ontological tragedy - the impossibility of love, and the lack of being is the criminal of causing the existential tragedy of love. (Hannam University)

One of the most gifted and prolific novelists of the twentieth century and a noted moral philosopher, Iris Murdoch was concerned with recent ethical issues. Murdoch`s philosophical vision is based on the recognition of true reality of individuals. By using fantastical elements in her novel, Murdoch stressed that selfish and illusioned characters come to recognize their own fantasy and attain to the vision of reality. Charles Arrowby in The Sea, the Sea, is a famous theatre director and actor who has retired to the seaside. His aspiration for power leads him to confuse dream with reality, imagination with perception. At the end, he comes to realize he was a self-centered man who has simply followed fantasy without knowing the reality of himself and others around him. Murdoch`s novels are dramatizations of the lives of the people who are confused or deluded by fantasy but who seek enlightenment, freedom, and understanding of reality. Cultural and global awareness are required elements for successful teaching of foreign languages in elementary schools. The National English Revision to the Elementary English Textbook acknowledges the necessity of including English speaking cultural instruction in English language classrooms to promote explorative learning between the students` culture and those of the target language. This study analyzes the suitability of cultural elements included in the National English Revision of the Elementary English Textbook. This study identifies those elements that are unsuitable for cognitive and affective levels of development associated with elementary learners. Instructional elements unconnected to lesson objectives were also identified and addressed in this study. Moreover, this study recommends guidelines for selecting and developing effective cultural elements and strategies for elementary school English language instruction.
