This study examined the communication style of Korean society using car stickers, particularly novice driver signs, drawing from Habermas’ theory of communicative action. The communication styles that could be observed on novice driver signs were classified into eight categories, and changes in these styles were analyzed. A novice driver sign can be perceived as a communicative device, moral protective device, or safety device by means of which the novice driver talks to the experienced driver. Such a sign is a medium of communication among the cars in question. An ideal communication can be realized if the receiver who is an experienced driver is able to accept the intention of the speaker, namely, the driver who attaches the sign on his or her car. In fact, however, the character of an individual or a disadvantaged group is more likely to be damaged within a society. The personality of both the novice driver who attached the sign and the experienced driver who accepts it should be respected on the road. This will occur when both instrumental rationality and communicative rationality are realized by the novice driver sign, as suggested by Habermas.

This study proposes the Small Scale Test(SST) model that allows students to experience taking an essay and speaking test for college entrance adapted from KSAT data interpretation type questions. This model is focused on the process rather than results, and teaching rather than assessment. The SST model does not have as much reliability and validity as large-scale tests, because it is designed for students to write an essay after their data interpretation and to give a verbal description. Instead, the SST has the advantage of offering integrated teaching of three language skills - reading, writing, and speaking; students also experience reduced assessment. The usefulness of the SST model is verified by research on a subject group of 42 students and evaluation by an expert group of 5 assessors. This model is applicable to speech and composition classes as well as essay and speaking tests for school.

The purpose of this study is to understand conflict conversations between the youth generation and the old-age generation through an analysis of TV dramas. Intergenerational conflict, the natural and inevitable phenomenon of disharmony in thought, value systems, or behavior, can be expressed verbally or non-verbally. When expressed through utterances of dissatisfaction, the result is a conflict conversation. This study focuses on the youth generation``s response utterances, which is perceived as impolite by the old-age generation. These expressions of dispreferred response utterances that cause intergenerational conflicts lead to mutual loss of face and exert a negative influence on the relationship between both generations; these expressions are not used spontaneously but strategically, out of a need to emerge the victor from the confrontation. Such research into the structures and strategies of verbal conflict can be useful in illuminating the problems and verbal processes inherent in the verbal conflicts that arise so often in daily life.

The aim of this study is to provide an analysis of strategies for eliciting involvement in the discourses of college lecture. In order to initially determine what these strategies might be, the lecture “Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do” with Michael Sandel at Harvard University was analyzed. The data analyzed using the methodology of classroom conversation structure analysis. Within the context of this study, involvement strategy can be divided into two categories: macro-elicitation and micro-elicitation. In this study, macro-elicitation involvement strategies such as “a topic as a medium-setting strategy”, “topic and theme construction strategy”, etc. were directly related to the way of presenting, developing, and maintaining pedagogical themes. Also, the results showed that lecturers utilized narrative strategy, dramatization frame strategy, and other similar micro-elicitation involvement strategies in their lectures. Narrative strategy can be considered an efficient way to present a vivid situation that relates to a pedagogical theme. Lecturers also used dramatization frame strategy to make their conversations with students into a scene, thus creating a pedagogical theme. The research showed that these strategies helped elicit student involvement in the contents of the lecture.

The purpose of this study is to design an educational method that improves students’ interpretative ability in nonverbal communication. For this purpose, the existing problems of nonverbal communication education were analyzed. As nonverbal expression is regarded as a sign that represents customary meaning, the people who use nonverbal expressions are not considered. Also, nonverbal communication education is limited to the lower sequence. There are three approaches to nonverbal communication education. First, the structural approach is to classify nonverbal expressions by type. Second, the functional approach is to evaluate the suitability of nonverbal expressions. Third, the constructional approach is to construct the meaning of nonverbal expressions in the context of the communication. In accordance with these approaches, decoding, evaluation, and interpretation are explained. Decoding is the conversion of nonverbal expressions into linguistic meanings that are customary and fixed. Evaluation is the assessment of whether the nonverbal expressions selected to achieve the intended meanings are appropriate or not. Interpretation is the interpreter’s active construction of the significance of the nonverbal communication. In addition, three principles are set up to teach how students interpret nonverbal expressions: the principle of singularity, principle of complexity, and principle of creativity. Using these elements, students have experiences of constructing creative and critical meanings of nonverbal communication that cannot be easily fixed, and creating a new meanings of nonverbal communication.

This study examines the awareness and perceptions of intermediate to advanced level. Thai learners of Korean compared to native Korean speakers, with regard to the differences between male and female utterances and utterable genderlects. The research questions are as follows: (1) Do Thai learners, compared to Korean native speakers, make different judgments regarding Korean utterable genderlects and perceiving the attitude? (2) Is Thai learners’ understanding of the obviousness of gender preferences in utterances different to that of Korean speakers? In this study, samples of utterable genderlects were extracted from the categories of phonemes, vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatics. The data were analyzed using a frequency analysis and chi-squared test. The analysis showed that the highest deviation between Thai learners and native Korean speakers was in the category of pragmatics, implying that pragmatics is the most challenging aspect of acquiring utterable genderlects. Moreover, Thai learners were, in general, well-aware of utterable genderlects with more obvious gender preferences, especially female utterances. Therefore, it can be said thatThai learners are not uniformly different from native Korean speakers in understanding utterable genderlects. Results from such studies should be reflected in the field of Korean language education.
