This study analyzed the online conversation pattern of college students in the online messaging platform KakaoTalk using meta-dialogue analysis for online conversational education research focusing on cultural identity inquiry. The analysis is based on the theory of impression management by Goffman, theory of social infiltration by Altman and Tyler, essence of speech, characteristics of online education, and perspective of media education related to cultural identity. A metacognitive analysis was conducted on KakaoTalk conversation data of 97 first-year college students using an anti-structuring guidebook. The relationship setting was divided into individuals and groups, which were subdivided into family and relatives, close friends, older and younger peers, and distant friends. The analysis revealed that both groups and individuals engaged in positive communication with short messages at high frequency; and the messages increasingly lost adherence to the principles of grammar and politeness as they became familiar with other people. Different emoticons were used according to the degree of closeness to the other person; various expression management strategies were used to form a target image by using specific consonant or speech types. The use of longer sentences in a message and lower frequency of messaging indicated a larger cognitive burden on the relationship with a partner. The interactions also showed a tendency to communicate more or less positively, emphasizing the temporal aspect rather than the relationship. This study recommended the development of educational contents that enable learners to use proper narration in the media environment and the direction of narrative education as a tool to accumulate social capital.

I studied the paralanguage differences between a human announcer and TTS devices during the out-loud reading of news sentences, and arrived at the following results. First, the announcer’s intonation changed flexibly within a sentence whereas the intonation of the TTS devices was rather fixed at an either rising or falling tone. Second, the announcer stressed specific words within a sentence by changing her voice intensity, whereas the TTS devices maintained the same intensity throughout the sentence. Third, pause duration differed for both of the announcer and the “nVoice”-type TTS device but not for the “VoiceText”-type TTS device. In addition, the TTS devices made errors in reading by punctuating. Fourth, the announcer kept changing the pace within a sentence, whereas the TTS devices read all the words at an almost constant pace. Fifth, the announcer pronounced short and long vowels distinctively, but the TTS devices pronounced all vowels almost always using the same length. Sixth, the announcer widened her mouth when pronouncing open vowels, corresponding with the opening widths of given vowels, whereas the opening width of the TTS devices was smaller compared to that of the announcer’s. In sum, when reading aloud news sentences, the human announcer controlled the paralanguage features in a context-dependent manner, whereas the TTS devices tended to maintain the same paralanguage features throughout entire sentences.

This study aimed to provide a theoretical framework for the validation of KSL speaking assessment using the argument-based approach. As outline of the model for the validation process, the argument-based approach to validity as presented by Michael Kane was evaluated. The argument-based approach provides a framework for test score interpretation; its use is supported by appropriate and validated evidence. Based on Kane’s test validation approach, which constructed the claim and assumption of inferential processes, the argument-based approach described the assessment validation procedure into interpretive argument and validity argument. The validation of KSL speaking assessment using the argument-based approach was designed to support claims on the intended purposes of the assessment. This study presented each model of interpretive argument related to KSL speaking assessment for summative and high-stakes proficiency assessments.

The purpose of this study was to develop an empathy scale for empathic communication between family members. This study resulted in the development of four empathy scale: one for spouses, one for parents to use for children, one for children to use for their parents, and one for children to use for their siblings. The preliminary questions were comprised of 40 basic items including cognitive, affective, and expressive empathy, which were classified by type, and then modified to fit the respondents and subject in the family sub - system. The first item was selected for each scale using exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis was also performed to confirm the fitness of the factor structure and the validity of the question. As a result, the final questions were selected for each of the four scales and were verified through proper analysis, which confirmed their use as a valid test. The scales developed in this study are expected to be used to measure empathy realization aspect between spouses, parents and children, and siblings, according to the family sub - system. It is also expected to help promote empathic communication between family members.

This article suggests that self-disclosure should be understood from an interactive point of view. It also suggests that self-disclosure should be a strategy of speech communication. On examining the revised curriculum in 2015, it was found that the contents of education related to self-disclosure were mainly dealt with from the viewpoint of the speaker. Therefore, this study focused on an audience-oriented strategy, since dialogue is an interaction between the speaker and the listener. In the self-disclosure method, the principle of ‘empathy’ is most important because the audience sincerely takes into account the speaker’s self-disclosure information and goes along with his feelings. Reflecting on this point, in this study, we tried to find out the main factors that led to the positive process of self-disclosure in ‘empathic listening’ of the listener. The film, < Good Will Hunting >, was selected to confirm the development of the aspects of empathic listening strategies and the way in which self-disclosure are developed. As the self-disclosure progresses in < Good Will Hunting >, the focus and topic of the conversation is transferred from Sean and circumstance itself to Will himself. Moreover, in the process of self-disclosure, Will establishes the correspondence between his inner thoughts, feelings, and desires. In other words, the person who showed self-defensive and distorted self-disclosure changed into a person who could truly look into his inner self and express it with authenticity. Through the positive process of Will’s self-healing and growth, he was able to see the importance of proper self-disclosure. Through this discussion, it can be seen that in the process of self-disclosure, the role of the listener is as important as the speaker’s. When the listener sincerely intends to empathize with the speaker, the process of self-disclosure can be positive.
