This ethnographic study investigated how the students in a third-grade classroom chose their writing topics and how they perceived their peers` choice of writing topics in relation to gender. The study is situated in the literature on the children`s writing and gender discourses as well as children`s enactment of gender identities taken from the media production. Data collections included a semester-long participant observation, field notes, semi-structured interviews, informal, retrospective conversations with the teacher and students, and collection of the students` writing artifacts. Unlike the findings from the previous studies that demonstrated students` representations of gender stereotypes in their stories, the students` stories in this study were not consistent with conventional gender binaries. Instead, there were several unrecognized and unnoticed moments at which the students were not subjected to the conventional gender binaries. Implications suggested that teachers can create a classroom environment that invites students to become aware of question and disrupt taken-for-granted gender relations and discourses. Such an explicit effort to address multiple gender constructions with students would contribute to creating more inclusive and socio-culturally sensitive literacy education.

We may point out three important points about family. First, family is the starting point of the birth of vertical human relations. Second, such vertical human relations are not limited to a specific family but are, though informal, a kind of social phenomenon that has attained a social consensus. Third, the ethical value of vertical human relations formed through family may vary according to each people`s historical situation or customs, and the enforceability of such relations based on social consensus may be different. This study proposes to discuss the three issues through stepmother stories handed down in Korea and Japan. I discuss that the typical pattern of stepmothers` evil deeds is different depending on whether the former wife`s child is a son or a daughter. That is, unconditional sacrifice is forced on the former wife`s daughter through domestic labor, extramarital pregnancy, etc. and on the former wife`s son through his sacrifice to cure his parent`s disease. In addition, such typical patterns mean the deprivation of the deprivation of the former wife`s daughter`s position at home and the deprivation of the former wife`s son`s position in society. In order to restructure the vertical human relation of the family, the stepmother has to deprive the former wife`s children of their positions based on the established family relation. In this sense, stepmother stories reveal violence that is either hidden in families built on vertical human relations or tabooed in normal families.

This study investigated the position of discourse in Korean education. First I have discussed the necessity of argument, pointing out the fact that the contents of discourse teaching is not sufficient. For the goal of discourse education to be apparent, I have distinguished discourse from grammar. Dividing it into two dimensions, I have presented it according to these dimensions. In the internal dimension, comprehension and expression of cohesive and coherent discourse have been set up as a teaching-learning activity. On the contrary, strategies of communication have been an established goal of the teaching-learning activity. The strictness and hierarchy of these contents in teaching setting should be residual issues for further debate.

The purpose of this study was to examine writing assessment according to raters` career length and gender. A total of 83 teachers were asked to rate essays written by students following completion guidelines in an empathizing task. The results showed that writing assessments differed by teachers` career length and by assessment criteria, and that assessments changed based on the gender of both the students and raters, thus revealing gender bias and same-sex depreciation. These outcomes suggest the following: First, teachers should control writing task criteria. Second, rater gender should be controlled in large-scale writing assessments. Lastly, teachers should examine and reflect on their own writing assessment skills even if they have sufficient teaching experience.

The present study investigated changes in three types of anxiety by Korean heritage language learners over a year and their correlations with achievement. The study population consisted of sixteen Korean heritage students who took two semesters of a Korean class offered by a large southwestern university in the U.S. As other previous studies, Korean heritage learners showed a relatively low level of anxiety in all three different measures and had highly negative correlations with achievement, confirming that students with high anxiety had lower achievement than students with lower anxiety. Moreover, all three anxiety measures showed highly positive correlations with each other, indicating that one type of anxiety can be a predictor of other types of anxiety.

This review revolves around pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) from Shulman`s periods and contemporary contexts. Despite growing interest in PCK in Korean literacy education, there are still unresolved issues and confusion around the concept. As problematizing this concern, this paper aims to provide a tentative solution for the issues. The PCK is a still useful framework that educational researchers and practitioner prefer to use because it overcomes the traditional dual professional systems: separate in-service teaching tracks of content and pedagogy. It also has scientific evidence that teachers with PCK are better for teaching roles than teachers without PCK. Nevertheless, PCK does not stand without issues and critiques. First, there are issues of PCK concept per se. PCK is an elusive concept so that educational researchers provide a variety of interpretations. Since it was proposed nearly 30 years ago, the idea of PCK did not reflect the new perspective of learning and instructions: teachers` assessment, metacognition, and professional determination were missed in the original concept. Second, the characteristics of Korean language education make difficult to conceptualize PCK in the domain of language use. By emphasizing the knowledge transformation, adaptation, and reflection phases, a new model of PCK is proposed as a tentative solution to these issues. This model can capture dynamic, contextualized, interactive nature of teacher knowledge in the Korean language education.

The purpose of this study was to explore the Internet reading strategies that are used by elementary school students to locate specific information. Fifteen upper-grade students who registered in a book discussion class at Korea University participated in the study. Data was collected through a survey, navigational records, and participants` stimulated recall. Researchers separated the process into three phases: initial searching phase, the search result reading phase, and in-site reading phase. Additionally, we set an evaluation phase that was observed throughout the three phases. More than 30 strategies were identified and some strategies were used across multiple phases. Findings suggested that 1) Early age readers have to learn about these strategies and how to apply them in actual situations. 2) A balanced approach of training for both printed and Internet reading is needed for these students. 3) Strategies that are related to the Internet environment will be helpful when readers access the information. 4) There is a need for additional attention to students` familiarity with technological aspects.

This research examines what motivates students to learning Korean, and how their motivation also affects their preferences for content of Korean culture and Korean popular culture/K-pop. For this study, I conducted surveys of 155 students and interviews with 30 students enrolled in the beginners` level Korean language course at The University of Queensland in 2014. The results show that students are motivated most by ‘K-pop’ and ‘Korean popular culture’, followed by Future job prospects, and Others. Regardless of their different motivations, students commonly showed high preferences for learning content related to ‘Daily life in Korean society’, ‘Greetings/etiquettes of Korean society and language’, while they showed lower preferences for topics such as ‘Fashion’ and ‘Housing’. The average mean score of culture content students wanted to learn for beginners` level of Korean is included in the paper. In addition, the results showed that K-pop did not significantly impact the students` preferences in cultural content, but that the influence of Korean popular culture was much more significant. There were strong/moderate positive correlations between interest in ‘Korean popular culture’ and culture content. However, the students` ultimate aim was not to learn Korean popular culture; rather, they want to understand the daily interactions of Korean people, greetings/etiquettes of Korean society and language, and Korean target culture including the different values and traditions embedded in Korean popular culture. This research focused on beginner level of Korean, in order to gain an understanding of the general trends of students` motivations. Further study of intermediate/advanced Korean learners is needed.

This study aims to systematically collect and organize studies relevant to education of acceptance of novels with the method of systemical review and to understand the trend in education of acceptance of novel research in addition to offering constructive suggestions. In this research, a total of 67 studies were finalized for analysis from three kinds of search DB. The categories for analysis of studies (aim, knowledge, acceptance, attitude, teaching and learning methodology, teaching material, evaluation) were set based on the education curriculum system. The basic tendency of studies is as follows: the research on education of acceptance of novels, which gained popularity starting latter half of 2000, is centered around middle school students and modern novel texts. Common research methodologies employed were analysis of novels and analysis of education curriculum and textbooks. The characteristics of each category of studies are as follows. The research on the aim, knowledge, attitude, and evaluation is still in its preliminary stage and thus needs to get into stride in future. Accounting for a great portion, research on education of acceptance has been carried out with an ideological orientation on one hand and with its focus on the novel texts themselves on the other hand. The research on teaching and learning methodology has been conducted at various levels including activities, discipline, and theories while the education on teaching material has been textbook-oriented. As such analysis results show the current status of education of acceptance of novels, it can serve as the basis for systematically reviewing and developing education of acceptance of novels.
