This study agrees with the argument that the value system of Korean has changed as time goes on and reclassifies Korean’s value system by reflecting values of Korean and Korean society and investigates and analyzes changes of the value system in detail. The investigated document is ‘2013 Survey on Korean Awareness and Values,’ and investigating method is Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory applied as the category for distinction. Examining modern Korean society with Hofstede’s theory suggests that Korea is going through a period of transition from individualism, masculine and self-restraining society to feminine and self-satisfying society. On the other hand, it is shown that modern Korean society still has a high power distance and uncertainty avoidance but little long-term oriented feature and it is different from existing classification of Korean’s value system. This study has a signification that it categorizes value system of Korean people reflecting modern Korean awareness and values correctly with an empirical analysis on Korean value system applying recent data. This paper aims to link language and culture in a sociocultural context by incorporating a TV drama series [Misaeng (‘incomplete life’) 2014] into the curriculum of an advanced Korean language course, in order to enhance the learners’ socio-languacultural competence. Sociocultural competence can be defined as various aspects of communicative ability and knowledge that involve sociocultural conventions and norms shared by members of society (Cohen & Olshtain, 1981; Celce-Marcia, Dorneyi, & Thurred, 1995; Ek & Trim, 2000). In this context, the language curriculum should help students understand and explore sociocultural aspects of the target language, which play an increasingly important role in foreign language education, at the same magnitude of importance as acquiring linguistic competence. This paper illustrates details of a design process, using a TV drama series as a valuable resource of multiliteracies, to bridge the gap between textbook learning and real-world language use. To assess the outcome, data were collected from a survey questionnaire. The project outcomes and their pedagogical implications are discussed as they pertain to students' advancement in cultural competency. (Yale University. Boston University)

Cultural norms in a particular society mean a criteria which the members of the society agree and use to communicate with each other in either verbal or non-verbal ways. Since these days language methodology emphasizes communication, ‘Non-verbal Communication’ also called as‘Body language’ is a crucial matter in language education. Especially KFL(Korean as a Foreign Language) education of overseas universities is more so. This study aims to contrast Turkish and Korean non-verbal communication ways, and to propose how non-verbal communication in Korean language education should be taught to Turkish learners. Also in order to overcome non-verbal communication differences, this paper makes the following suggestions. First, Korean non-verbal expressions should be included in the syllabus under the subject of “Korean Culture.” Second, curriculum developments based on movies and dramas should be made for Korean departments of universities at overseas. Third, work and study programs should be made for learning Korean manners. Fourth, photos, pictures, etc. which describe body languages should be included for developing localized teaching materials.(Ankara University)

With the increasing demands for Korean education, many teaching materials have been developed by utilizing a variety of medias. Although the education through TV news plays a very important role to the learners at an advanced level, it seems difficult to publish the textbooks utilized TV news. The reason is that it is an complicated process to get the contents, and the news itself has short vitality. However, the writers of this paper published current Korean textbooks taking advantage of YTN news contents, analyzed the steps up to the publication, and established the principles of education by utilizing TV news. This paper, first, summarized the step-by-step process about publishing the Korean educated textbooks by utilizing TV news, and arranged the problems that may occur in the process. Depending on the subjects, < Current Korean to Learn through YTN News > consists 4 parts and 31 units. It proposed the application plans and what the Korean teachers should pay attentions to when teaching students using this textbook. This will be shown through a teaching and learning application, which is a 50-minute class, based on unit 3 of partⅠ named ‘the Animals Under the Full Moon?’. It will be used as a standard model when teaching foreigners by utilizing TV news. (Incheon National University·Seoul National University)
