Speech Corpora for Foreign Language Education: Methods and Tools

본 연구는 현대의 기준에 맞추어 잘 디자인된 발화 코퍼스의 구축 및 활용이 외국어 교육에 있어 교사, 학습자 및 연구자들에게 구체적으로 어떤 도움을 줄 수 있는지 보이고자 하였다. 이를 위해 400명에 이르는 프랑스어권 모국어 화자의 발화를 체계적인 프로토콜 하에서 녹음한 자료로 이루어진 대규모 코퍼스 프로젝트인 Phonologie du Français Contemporain(PFC), 그리고 이를 모체로 하여 출발한 프로젝트인 Interphonologie du Français Contemporain(IPFC)에 대해 소개한다. 특히 IPFC는 다양한 나라에서 프랑스어를 배우는 학습자들의 발화를 PFC와 동일한 프로토콜 아래에서 녹음하여 구축한 학습자 말뭉치로서 말뭉치 구축을 위하여 사용하는 방법론, 프로젝트의 중요한 성과 및 구축 과정에서 대두된 이슈와 한계점 등을 제시하고, 이 같은 프로젝트가 제2외국어 학습 및 교육 측면에 어떤 시사점을 던져줄 수 있는지 논의한다. 마지막으로 두 프로젝트에서 구축된 발화 코퍼스를 바탕으로 이루어진 연구들에서 산출된 여러 교수학습자료들과 발화 말뭉치를 분석하기 위해 개발된 프로그램인 Dolmen을 소개한다. 한국어 학습자 자료 기반 문화습득 연구의 현황과 과제

The purpose of this study was to examine trends and future tasks of the research that investigate culture acquisition based on Korean learner data. This study started from a step to define concept keywords focusing on culture acquisition and Korean learner, search for then, by these keywords, the articles that utilize Korean learner data published in various academic journals over the past 10 years. The analysis considered status of the researches approaching to the culture acquisition based on Korean learner data in two major aspects; acculturation related on migration or long-term stay(marriage migrant women, immigrated children, foreign student) and culture learning in the perspective of speech act. Based on thorough review so far, this study was able to show not only the recent trends of empirical research on Korean learner’s acculturation and culture learning, but also the way that the diversification of Korean learner data should advance in future. The present study basically aims to make a Korean dialect grammar syllabus for migrant brides, and to find ways to develop effective teaching & learning materials and plans. To this end, the present paper, as part of the basic research, compares the suffixes that can correspond to those in the standard language in terms of grammatical constraints, semantic functions and usage, while centering on ‘-(eu)na/-no’, ‘-(ee)ra/-ro, ‘(eu)ra/-ro’, ‘-da/-do’ and ‘-(n)ga/-go’ which are the suffixes of an interrogative ending, “hae-ra” which is one of the least honorific form, in order to develop an effective Korean dialect grammar education for migrant brides, since the form is the most representative interrogative ending in the Andong dialect. In the Andong region, the interrogative sentence formation is greatly different from that of today’s standard language as the dialect retains many traces of the medieval Korean language. Therefore, for effective teaching & learning of those suffixes, the sentence-end focalization and intonation should be understood and practiced, centering on the vowel contrasts between ‘ah’ and ‘oh’ forms so that learners will be able to read the different intentions of a speaker for smooth communication. 구어 담화에서 나타나는 ‘무슨(museun)’의 담화표지 기능

Up until now, studies on ‘museun’ focused on functions of interrogatives and infinitives. However, this research looks into ways in which ‘museun’ is used as discourse marker in spoken language rather than interrogatives and infinitives. Discourse marker usually influences discourse structure or information structure, and it acts as a significant function of discourse which shows the speaker’s psychological attitude or relationship with the hearer. In this research, the object of study was conversations between characters that appear in Korean semi-spoken corpus. Here, ‘museun’ in various contexts will be analyzed to understand its functions as discourse marker, and this analysis will be compared with preceding researches to look at the differences. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to understand the actual function of ‘museun’, which cannot be defined as interrogatives and infinitives, in spoken discourse. (Yonsei University)

재미 동포와 재남미 동포의 언어 사용 양상에 대한 비교 분석 연구

This study aims to compare and analyze the language use patterns among Koreans in the Korean communities in North and South America. It is important to survey attitude, environment and use patterns concerning the Korean language in both groups to understand how the language is changing and transcending as a mother tongue. The survey data was collected in major residental locations of Koreans in the US, Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. The analysis of topic related to language attitude and perception, language proficiency, and language use environment showed that Korean-South Americans were higher Korean proficiency than Korean-North Americans. Especially, in the case of the 2nd generation groups, the Korean-South Americans showed a stronger proficiency in the Korean language use. Korean immigrants in both areas have a immigrant history jointly, however, the current social, economic and educational systems and policies could affect the language choices and change of Korean immigrants in both areas. Based on the results of this study, the future use of Koreans are predicted in both areas. (Yonsei University)

이주민의 사회통합을 위한 한국 문화 교육 방법 연구

This study investigated the content and methods of teaching Korean Culture Education to immigrants in order to stabilize and integrate them into multicultural Korean society. As Korea becomes a multicultural society, due to language and cultural differences, immigrants in Korea face lots of difficulties and conflicts to adapt themselves into Korean society, It is urgent to build up an ideological foundation in order for the society to overcome these conflicts and to integrate all of them into the multicultural Korean society. In this study, we propose a interculturalism as a principle of social integration. Interculturalism disintegrates superiority of power inherent in diversity and puts emphasis on mutual respect and solidarity. In this study, first, we suggests ‘interactivity’ and ‘individuality’ as the characteristics of interculturalism. Based on these characteristics, we analyzed the cultural aspects < Korea and Korean culture for immigrants >, the textbooks of social integration program, for both beginner (1,2) and intermediate (1,2) levels. We reviewed these textbook to find out whether they are appropriate for the social integration of the Koreans and immigrants. Based on the results, we suggest methods to enhance social integration. 학습자 말뭉치 구축을 위한 구어 전사 지원 도구의 개발 방향

The main purpose of this study is to suggest the way that develops the automatic transcription tool for foreign learner’s spoken corpus construction. The automatic transcription tool is primarily applied for efficiency. However, In terms of transcribing foreign learner’s speech is treated as the spoken corpus, transcription tools incorporate speech recognition process should be focused on the accuracy of recognition. In numerous cases, transcribing speech through the automatic tool is operated by the native speaker’s parameters. In those cases, corpus data can be established as an inappropriate form that is caused by inaccurate speech recognition based on the native speaker’s data. Therefore, the process of perceiving foreign learner’s speech should be programmed through the foreign learner’s parameters can raise the recognition rate. The foreign learner’s parameters can be composed of their own phonetic properties and frequent patterns of error.(Hongik University, Yonsei University)
The research subject of this study is the Curriculum Development of Korean for Interpretation and Translation Purposes. For Korean interpretation and translation Studies has become an important area of research in recent years, particularly in China due to the rapid increase of the number of Korean Interpretation and Translation programs at graduate and postgraduate levels. Foreign students will want to learn the Korean translation and interpretation. This high level of Korean language education requires foreign learners to the Korean translation and interpretation. However, Except a few subjects or classes, The Korean education has not yet developed such a program. This study explores the curriculum development of Korean programs for interpretation and translation and attempts to offer a model through the program of the Korean language education for foreigners. This paper attempts to review Korean education curriculum for Interpretation and Translation development approaches on Korean language school, Analyze Content for education and the learner surveys approaches, focusing on Assessment of learners who have completed this program.
