This study aims to compare reading ability and vocabulary and grammar competence of Korean language learners by dividing them into two groups, i.e. a Hanja (Chinese characters) culture group and a non-Hanja culture group. It also aims to examine the correlation of reading ability and vocabulary/grammar competence. Despite a large number of studies on mother tongue influence in Korean language education, no study yet has distinguished between the Hanja and the non-Hanja culture groups. The study showed no significant difference between the two groups in case of vocabulary and grammar competence. However, the Hanja group displayed better reading ability than the non-Hanja group. Also, the Hanja group learners showed higher improvement in their vocabulary and grammar competence and reading ability at the intermediate level when examining by Korean proficiency level changes in their vocabulary/grammar scores and reading scores. Moreover, as proved in the previous researches, a strong correlation was confirmed between the vocabulary/grammar scores and the reading scores in both groups. The correlation was stronger at the beginner level than at the intermediate level. (Keimyung University)

Vocabulary research of Korean language learners has typically focused on selecting vocabulary items for educational vocabulary lists and searching for effective vocabulary instruction. However, measuring vocabulary has been discussed only in the sub-area of vocabulary test of TOPIK or as an instrument of test results of experimental studies, and not in measuring learners’ language ability. The instrument to measure vocabulary knowledge needs to develop to not only measure vocabulary size, but to also describe the characteristics of language learners' proficiency. This study conducted some pilot tests to measure vocabulary size and knowledge for advanced Korean learners and discussed some advantages and disadvantages of tests as an appropriate method of assessing vocabulary size knowledge. Measuring vocabulary size is limited by the selection of vocabulary items and the format of the test. The study used a random sample of 500 words from < Basic Dictionary of Korean > containing 50,000 words to estimate vocabulary size by a way of checking for whether the word was known or unknown. The result of this test was compared to the result of measuring vocabulary knowledge tests of academic words. In calculation of the correlation of these tests, an instrument to design for vocabulary measurement would be proposed. (Yonsei University)

This study is aimed at helping Korean learners in understanding Korean symbol and then Korean culture more deeply, by examining the cultural meaning of the headlines and how symbols are being used in contemporary culture of Korea, focused on expressions of the headlines. As symbols imply cultural heritage that underlies Korean thought and emotion, we can understand the identity of Korea and Koreans through symbols. Such symbols may be efficiently utilized in intercultural communication, because it is possible to communicate thoughtfully only when properly understanding symbols of other’s culture. Symbols are expressed by metaphor in contemporary culture in many cases. In addition, as headlines implicitly present the contents of the entire article by means of omission and metaphor, we might misunderstand the whole contents of an article if we don’t properly understand symbols used for the headline. Accordingly, it is very important for Korean learners to grasp what meaning the symbols have in Korean culture, which are mainly used for the headlines, for the purpose of understanding contemporary culture of Korea. Therefore, this study examined advanced researches to divide symbols in four categories such as ‘animal, color, number, and plant’, and reviewed how each symbol is presented in specific headlines on portal sites. It is expected, through this, to provide significant education regarding symbols, that help Korean learners in understanding contemporary culture of Korea through the newspaper articles. Furthermore, it may contribute to expansion of Korean teachers’ background knowledge about the Korean culture. (Kyung Hee University)

This study analyzes research trends of Korean language education for students who have multi-cultural backgrounds. To this end, this study analyzes 253 dissertations in the fields and draw implication from the analysis; first, there is a need to define language capabilities required to multi-cultural students. Second, multi-level approaches are needed to address various characteristics of learners. Third, researchers need to conduct studies that cover middle school students, high school students and incoming teenage students from foreign countries. Fourth, there is a need to expand research issues that are focusing on vocabulary based academic literacy to issues like analyzing grammar and conversational structures. Fifth, contents-based instruction model and tightly coupled cooperation systems with other subjects should be developed. Sixth, more research about evaluation and teachers’ capacities should be encouraged. This study focuses on learners studying for academic purposes and aims to develop a speaking assessment tool using a task-based approach that can evaluate speaking skills for use in professional academic activity. Specifically, the author performed an analysis on tasks featured in a current textbook on speaking for academic purposes, and the results were used in the examples provided with the speaking assessment questions. The task analysis was conducted in three ways; analysis toward main speech functions, ways of participation, and topics of each task. According to the result, the specific speech contents were different for each main speaking function, such as presentation and discussion. For former, the main content was delivery of facts and for the latter, opinion statement was more important. In addition, a pilot test was conducted to verify validity of the given question. An assessment tool developed from such procedures offers the following benefits. First, the questions are developed through a cyclical process. Second, the results of the assessment can provide respondents with information on their weaknesses and strengths for each speaking function. Third, the study adopts a method of group participation rather than individual participation for the function that involves interaction between learners in a speaking environment for actual academic purposes. This paper examined several cases of ‘parallelism transcription of original word, translation of the original word, teaching method and syllabus related concept term, transcription of equivalent concept term’ targeting the main concepts of more than two times which has appeared ‘questions and choices, example’ of the 11th volume TKFL area in TTKFL from 2006 to 2016. As a result, confusion occurs when there is confusion about the transcription and translations of the concept terms within the same test, and the confusion is more appeared when comparing the another test. In order to solve the problem of selection and decision of the concept term of TKFL area in TTKFL, the following points are proposed. First, for the consistency of spacing and punctuation of the concept term, it is necessary to supervise the questions, answers and an example according to spelling system of Hangeul. Second, in the case of a concept term with original word, the original word are indicated together with parentheses in order to reduce the confusion of examinee. Third, in case of a phonetic transcription of the original word, a concept term is written according to the Loanword Orthography and the Romanization of Korean. Fourth, the translation of the original word use the translation of the Korean language first and optionally with the selective use of literal translation and transliteration by Parkchangwon(2009). Discussion for decide upon an confirm the translation of the main concept terms and the standardization of the orthography should be started collecting opinions from the TKFL Community. In the future, in order to maintain the reliability and consistency of the national certified test, it is necessary to publish a list of the concept terms that are presented in TTKFL. We see from the vowel systems of the world that vocalic phonology generally consists of the three basic vowels, /a i u/ and some other vowels in an ordered fashion. Nevertheless, it is obvious that vowel system of one language differs from another in number of vowels it contains and its inventory. It is well known that vowels are basically classified by the three conventional parameters for vowel description, namely height, position in a front-to-back dimension and lip-rounding. One might say based on this that different vowel systems are different in the three primary parameters. However, a simple description on whether or not a specific vowel, say the high front rounded vowel /y/ is present or absent in a system cannot judge whether the system is universal or very isolated. The question that then arises is which types of vowel system are more universal, and what determines whether the system is universal or not. This paper aims to develop and provide an evaluation model or standards for the vowel systems of natural languages. The model in this paper consists of six standards, two from the property of vocalic typology in relation with number of vowels, and four from the three conventional properties for timbre of a vowel sound. The two standards, [Number of vowels] and [Vowel inventory] fall into the former, and the standards, [Lowness], [Equilibrium and Symmetry], [Frontness] and [Lip roundness] into the latter.
