This paper aims to provide a efficient structure and essential contents of Korean teaching material comparing the former materials. For both beginners and experts in studying foreign language the knowledge of pronunciation is very important. Thus education of pronunciation should be considered more important than any other one. However, the teaching materials which was published in either Korea or China can satisfy neither teacher nor student. Considering this situation, this paper compared and analyzed the representative books which are used in educational institutions of Korean language in China. The paper observed how the books describe the vowel, consonant, the final consonant and the rule of phonological change in Korean language. Then it pointed out the problems and proposed the plan of developing a comprehensive teaching material for basic Korean learners in China. (Inha University, Ocean University of China)

Knowledge about Korean language History(KLH) is not only ‘inert knowledge’ about Korean language of past period but also ‘active knowledge’ which contributes full understanding the present-day Korean language and is valuable in Korean language education. KLH is very helpful in teaching letters, phonics, grammar, and vocabulary of the Korean language. Especially KLH serves to reduce foreign student’s difficulties caused by preconceptions that the Korean language has many exceptional and irregular linguistic phenomena. KLH makes many learning materials understanding that seem to require simple memorials. Furthermore KLH helps foreign students to understand Korean traditional culture well. Hence Korean language teachers need to understand this role of KLH in Korean language Education. (Hannam University)

The purpose of this study is to bring up the necessity of culture instruction based on value in Korean education and to suggest its practical methodology. The foreign learners studying in Korea have strong language needs while those studying in the U.S. and Europe have additional needs of knowing Korean culture as well. Therefore, this study attempts to provide foreign learners with some information and knowledge about Korean modern cultures and to facilitate their understanding. The traditional classes teaching Korean culture simply focus on delivering information about Korean life culture. In this regard, this study tries to overcome their limitations and to provide foreign learners with the opportunity to know Korean peoples’ perspective implicit in their life style. This study examines Korean value oriented culture from the viewpoint of culture relativism and explores the characteristics of Korean cultures from the contrasitive cultures’ standpoint. Korean learners can appreciate Korean peoples’ perspective by value approached study. (Kyunghee University)

The purpose of this article is to provide some ideas to generate cultural education contents for the Spanish-speaking world. The premises are that to make gound in Korean studies, in the Spanish-speaking world, including Chile, there needs to be a culture and language educational unit, putting emphasis more on the culture. The author wants to say that Korean studies can take root through cultural education, to raise appropriate issues that can lead to understanding and sensitivity to intercultural differences. This article analyzes the Korean culture classes at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso since the second semester of 2004 and at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile since the first semester of 2006. Many Korean texts which were developed in Korea deal with Korean cultural education as a part of a language education course. But that’s not appropriate for the Spanish-speaking learners whose interest is more practical, that is to learn how to facilitate and accomplish their business goals and activities through understanding cultural differences. The aim of Korean cultural education has to be tailored to the learners interests and needs to learn more that what we Koreans want to teach them. Showing the role of tradition in modern Korean society and its meanings in other cultures can be the foremost element to introduce the students’ concerns and to create an appropriate Korean cultural text for futre application in the Spanish-speaking cultures throughout the world. The Language and Culture......The heroes, Man-taek and Hee-cheol are 38-year-old single men. Man-taek is a simple farmer still living with his mother. He is too naive to even catch a girl’s eye. Man-taek’s best friend Hee cheol is a impudent taxi driver but actually he’s also a pathetic single man. Suffering difficulties to find the brides to marry, the two friends decide to leave for Uzbekistan in search of their soul mates. There, Man-taek meets a North Korean defector, Lara who is a smart local interpreter, and they rejoin in South Korea while Hee-Cheol marrying Alonya, a ‘‘Koryosaram’ (Korean living in Uzbekistan). This movie is partly successful in portraying the pain and loneliness of those living in the peripheries of the world by making good use of familiar rural reality and Uzbekistan’s foreign landscapes. But the movie still advocates pure-blood nationalism, which is repeating a recipe that ‘Korean wave(halliu)’ movies borrow. A protagonist from one side of the divided Korean Peninsula and an antagonist from the other, their fates tragically or comically entangled. The plot is originated from the mindset that blood is thicker than water, and this thick blood should be none other than Dangun blood. It’s time for ‘Korean wave(halliu)’ movie maker to take into consideration what kind of themes they have to adopt and how they make scenes for open society that is broad-minded to the extent of embracing people from different ethic groups. Recently culture learning has been a much-discussed topic in Korean as a Foreign Language. The discussion focuses on teaching bits of cultural knowledge. However, ‘cultural practice’, ‘attitude’ and ‘reflexive attitude regarding to/ about self- and other-identity in a multicultural context’ are hardly treated, which are key points of ’intercultural understanding’ in a globalized age. This paper aims to make some suggestions for the direction of cultural learning in KFL in terms of this unexplored aspect of intercultural learning. Based on the concept of learning a foreign language as a means of interacting with people of another society and culture, it is attempted to apply the ethnographic research method to learning a culture in KFL. through Korean traditional musical instrument “Daegeum”. It makes foreigners to understand Korean spiritual world and to upgrade Korean language abilities. Following suggestions are made with the theoretical background above. 1) Korean educational field should be allowed to choose the general cultural factors without restriction. 2) The educational category selection of Korean traditional music should not be affected by the popular subject or the wide preference range of the masses. 3) The teaching method of cultural relativism which acknowledges the traditional culture difference between learners and teachers is recommended. 4) Culture learning for the better understanding of Korean language should be an education of experience and sensitivity. 5) Culture learners should express their cultural experiences and feelings through training for integration of 4 language skills. Also the field experience of culture learning through “Daegeum” verify that teaching method for Korean language through Korean traditional music can be effective. (Sun Moon University)
