The purpose of this paper is to analyze self-repair in the performance of Korean speaking test. Self-repair means that a speaker recognizes the difference between the contents and expression of discourse by him/herself and repairs it. In this study, Fifty Chinese Korean learners performed five speaking test tasks, the features of which can be categorized into covert repair and overt repair. 50 speaking samples were collected and transcribed. Covert repair plays a role in making a natural progress by means of hesitates and simple repetition. Overt repairs are used for obvious communication by means of emphasis or supple mentation of preceding discourse with substitution and repetition repairs. This study explored in which categories self-repairs features appeared in the performance of speaking test tasks. It was found that most of covert repair produced in the order of speaking test tasks number task 5, task 2, task 3, task 4, task 1. And then overt repair produced in the order of tasks 1, task 2, task 4, task 3, task 5. It is hoped that research on self-repairs features will positively link to the related issues in Korean speaking test and material development. (TongMyong University)

We need the list and level of the type of affix to apply for selecting affixes for Korean vocabulary education. There are some criteria for affix selection; frequency, productivity, predictability and regularity of function and so on. Frequency is the number of words in which an affix occurs. Productivity is the likelihood that the affix will be used to form new words. Predictability is the degree of predictability the meaning of the affix. And regularity of function is the degree to which the affix attaches to a base of known form-class and produces a word of known. In this paper, frequency of derivational suffixes of Korean nouns is extracted from word-analyzed corpus including all kinds of elementary school textbooks. As a result of analysis based on corpus, we get the list of suffix like ‘-deul, -eum, -i, -nim, -ssik’ and ‘-jeok, -mul, -hyeong, -ja, -jang’ in order of frequency. The result of this paper can be applied for developing Korean textbooks for learners in aspect of derivative teaching and learning. Research on applying the result of measuring the frequency is to be followed as soon as possible. (The National Institute of the Korean Language)

The objective of this Korean education basic research is the examination of Korean language aspects of foreign non-native, marriage immigrant women living in Korea whose L1s are Japanese and Tagalog(Filipino) mothers. The interlanguage aspects of the participants is analyzed using Mean Length of Utterance(MLU), particularly MLUw and MLUm. The results of the analysis showed a difference in MLUm during conversations between mothers and adults, but did not between mothers and children. When comparing MLUm, Japanese mothers were found to use more morphemes than Filipino mothers. This suggests that MLU is influenced depends upon L1 and that a non-native speaker will attempt to match their MLU with an interlocutor’s MLU. In regards to the aspect of interlanguage of marriage immigrant women, it first shows that universal interlanguage is not concerned with L1. This is due to the pro-verb usage of ‘하다’ which appeared equally among native Korean child interlanguage during early phases of language acquisition. This confirms interlanguage’s universality. Secondly, this language shows that language users with a high MLUm do not necessarily utter less interlanguage. Interlanguage is a universal phenomenon unconcerned with L1 regardless of MLU. This research confirms the reliability of MLU as a tool to measure Korean utterance fluency of married immigrant women, but cannot be used to measure the accuracy of those utterances. This study analyzed research trends of Korean grammar education through dissertations and articles published during the 2000s(2000 to 2012). The analysis is made in two aspects, the type and the detail subject of the studies. The analysis shows that there is a little increase in number of dissertations compared to journal articles. And As for the subject, researches are concentrated in limited detail subjects, such as grammar elements and grammar use aspects. Furthermore, most researches are considering only particular target learners and carried out through some limited methods. And the studies are scarce which discuss about Korean education grammar system and grammatical forms. The researches about teaching materials and methods are not sufficient either. This paper aims to investigate into the affixation of Chinese characters in the early modern East Asia. dealing with its development process by focusing on ‘-jeok/de/-teki’. The modern Korea, China and Japan, while accepting Western civilization, have made a great number of new Sino-Neologisms. In this process affixation of Chinese characters is generated, with a lot of Chinese-based affixes appearing. Affixation of Chinese characters happens mostly in nouns, but only ‘-jeok/de/-teki’ belongs to the affixation of auxiliary. Compared with other affixes it has experienced a different development process. This paper analyzes the affixation process of ‘-jeok/de/-teki’ revealing its origin. With 『해국도지(Hai-Guo-Tu-Zhi)』, 『서양사정(Things Western)』 and 『서유견문(Overview of Westward Travel)』 as the main references, this paper investigates affixation of Chinese characters by comparing Chinese characters of 『영화자전(An English and Chinese dictionary)』 and 『철학자회(Philosophical vocabulary)』. Recently the number of enrolled foreign students in Korean universities greatly increased, but many of them don’t have the ability to write satisfactorily in Korean. Some students cannot even make a correct sentence in Korean. In university, they get a grade from many activities, especially examinations where a large portion of the grades are taken. Studying the grammar and expressions which are used in writing the answers is important. Also, teachers need to teach that so that the students will be equipped with the basic ability to pass these subjects. Therefore this study suggests the grammars and expressions which are used in writing answers for KAP learners. First, this study researched questions for exams of six subjects that are related to Korean and Teaching Korean for foreigners. Many students cannot write proper answers because of simply misunderstanding the questions. The questions are classified into five types; define, explain, discuss, describe, and analyze. And then find the method in writing answers from type of questions by researching the rubric. Second, this study analyzed students’ examination papers. It presented grammatical errors and expressions from students’ written text. Finally, it based on the results which researched the grammatical errors and problems of students’ examination papers. This study suggests the grammars and expressions to be used in writing expository-type sentences in answering questions during examinations. It will not only help the students in writing answers by using proper grammars and expressions to make correct sentences during examinations, but also help the teachers in teaching expository type writing style in Korean writing classes for Academic Purposes. Expository writing is important to foreigners because most of the examinations given to them by their Korean classes require them to describe and explain things that they study in their classes. The purpose of this study is to accurately reflect current dictionary research through carrying out a survey with dictionary users as the subject of study, in order to qualitatively enhance dictionary research within Korean language education studies. Since the KLES dictionary is a dictionary that lists terms by subject, researchers and professors at Korea language were chosen as the subject of study. The survey questionnaires that make up the core of this study can be largely divided into two parts. The first section addresses the actual conditions surrounding dictionary usage by the questions that were given to the subject of this study, the dictionary users. Questions such as what dictionaries the subjects were currently using, what they were using their dictionaries for, as well as what problems the subjects faced when using their dictionaries, were asked. The second part suggests the subject area for the KLES dictionary that is currently being researched and questions were formulated to assess the importance of the suggested subject area. Also, to protect the current microstructure of the dictionary, they are composed of items on both appropriacy of headword description order and unrestrictedness in writing complementary measures in description. Through the results of this study, were able to accurately assess the needs of KLES dictionary users. Above all else, this study is significant in that it deducts to be necessary that for the qualitative enhancement of the KLES dictionary, further study into KLES’s subject area that was decided by consensus of specialists, further study into items that reflect the current research such as the importance of the number of entries classified by subject, and concrete, detailed guidelines for a plan for listings according to subject area and entry must be arranged. The purpose of this study was to examine the hierarchy methods of Korean irregular verbs in the context of teaching Korean as a foreign language. This study attempted to present the range and order of education that must be achieved to effectively teach the irregular predicates of the Korean language to foreign learners. First, to select irregular predicates that will be analyzed for hierarchy, this study defined irregular predicates based on a concept different from the concept applied in school grammar. Thus, since foreign learners recognize irregular predicates as the verbs and adjectives presenting structural changes in the combination between the stem and ending, this study defined irregular predicates as the predicates showing structural changes in the combination between the stem and ending. In particular, this study selected the seven irregular predicates that must be taught to foreign learners (‘ㄷ’, ‘ㄹ’, ‘ㅂ’, ‘ㅅ’, ‘ㅎ’, ‘르’, and ‘으’-irregular predicates) and sequentially ranked these predicates. This study viewed the frequency of usage and the grammatical difficulty of the predicative as important standards for the sequential ranking of irregular predicates and reflected these standards in the sequential ranking process.
