This paper aimed at examining Korean learners` grammar acquisition focusing on the tense use in complex-compound sentences. As such, we examined 13,748 words-size corpus of three intermediate mid to advanced low level learners` written texts over 22 months longitudinally. After annotation work with focused tagging set to mark the tense use clause and the error point, we analyzed quantitative results by SynKDP corpus analyzing program. Over 1,787 sentences including 1,450 conjunctive clauses and 1,178 embedded clauses, there were 29 conjunctive tense errors and 42 embedded tense errors. Frequency of errors implicated the importance of teaching adnominal clauses of embedded clause. Moreover, learner corpus also newly showed that there were strong discouragement factors in acquiring conjunctive clause tense use comparing to embedded clause tense use against conventional view. The primary aim of this study is: 1) to determine error sources and the effects of each error source in an analytic evaluation on APK(Academic Purpose Korean) writing ability; 2) to estimate the generalizability coefficient; and 3) to suggest optimal measuring conditions for an analytic evaluation on APK writing ability based on the generalizability theory. For the design of the G study(Generalizability Study), a three-facet crossed model(p x r x i) was used with two academic writing task(a test with 2 hour limit and a report with 1 week term), 9 raters, and 10 analytic scoring items. The D study(Decision Study) design was used in an identical manner as the G study. The result of the G study for estimating error sources in the analytic evaluation on APK writing ability indicates that error sources for raters have a more significant impact than error sources related to analytic scoring items associated with the score of the writing test. As for the generalizability coefficients in the D study, increasing the number of the raters had more significant impact than increasing the number of assessment items in the analytic evaluation on APK writing ability. However even the ratio in the error dispersion of the raters is not small, the ratio in the error dispersion of the items is 0. It means that these 10 analytic scoring items guided a coherent response from 9 raters. Therefore, it seems useful to train the raters with these 10 analytic scoring items.(Yonsei University)

The objective of speaking education in Korean is to help the learners develop abilities to communicate with native Korean speakers freely. In real life, however, it is not easy for Korean learners even in the intermediate level to take a leading role in conversations with native Korean speakers. Thus Korean learners need to study how to construct creative stories outside their limited conversation study patterns to take an initiative in speech and lead the conversation. In that aspect, more emphasis should be put on speaking education in Korean education by using storytelling. Research on storytelling has recently attracted attention in the field of Korean education, which means the number of researches is limited compared to other language research areas including English education and education for young children. In addition, it is difficult for learners themselves to search researches that provide the analysis results of storytelling assignments. Thus there should be enough researches on the characteristics of storytelling created by Korean learners in depth to design educational plans with storytelling. Taking that perspective, this study set out to analyze storytelling data created by Korean learners and investigate the characteristics of story structure in their storytelling, problems with their story construction, and any differences in their story construction abilities in a storytelling assignment according to the learning stages. The results will help to design educational plans for storytelling and to devise a set of specific evaluation criteria for story creation tasks in semi-direct speaking evaluation. (Donga University)

The aims of this article are to reveal the types of murye appearing in Korean speech act(especially in the situational and relational conditions of Korean novels and essays), to compare the types of murye and impoliteness strategies(cf. Brown and Levinson 1987, Culpeper 1996, 2003 and Bousfield 2008) and to help the leaners of Korean language maintain social relationships and lead successful communication. In Korea society, murye is provided the words and behaviors which are against socially adopted norms-authorization(permissions) of relations, needs, competence, space and accord between words and actions. Impoliteness analogizes with murye but with the different social norms and relational works, it puts basic wants before the social norms and has something to do with the intention of speaker. Therefore as difference, there are not discordance between one`s words and actions, refusal of fellowship, self-praise in impoliteness strategies and as in common of murye and impoliteness, there are non-consideration for others` needs and invasion of others` region. The purpose of this paper is the research in the Ethnography of Communication which is similar to that of studying culture in foreign language. It is because both aim for an explanation of the culture in which language is spoken, including communication patterns particular to that language. Observing types of behavior and communicative events which are unique to the target language culture will be helpful to language students who reside in the country where the target language is spoken in this case, students learning Korean and living in Korea. Foreign students can learn and find cultural differences in Korean language and Korean culture simultaneously because television dramas, as a composite culture, include the various life styles, behaviors, emotions and thinking of Korean people. Thus this study applied ethnography of communication which can help to observe learners find out by themselves and debate on the cultural differences in the drama they have seen and check validity and reliability through participation. Culture education that uses ethnography of communication is an effective method that helps understand learner`s capability of communication by themselves that result from the culture of the target language. This research marks the initial step toward the research on Korean language education for Christian missionaries in the colonial period. There have been some discussions on Korean language education for Christian missionaries in the field of History of Korean Language Education. Yet these do not go beyond mere conjecture, and there have not been any study which is supported by historical evidence. By using a meeting record, Annual Meeting of the Federal Council Protestant Evangelical Missions and a journal, The Korea Mission Field, both published by the Federal Council Protestant Evangelical Missions, this research managed to show that there in fact was a Korean "Language School" at least between 1920 and 1936. With the same materials, there search also made clear the educational system of the "Language School" and its educational curriculum, which under went changes five times, as well as the text books used and their transformation. Korean language education of this time is considered to have been terminated after 1942, when the Pacific War occurred and missionaries were chased away from Korean Peninsula. However, it is considered that after the liberation Korean language education was resumed for the missionaries returned to, and newly coming to, Korean Peninsula. It is also probable that this may have some connection with the establishment of Yonsei University Korean Language Institute, where the so-called "modern" Korean language education started. Further research is expected to be done on this historical continuity.

This study aims at analyzing Korean situational demonstratives and examining Chinese learners` acquisition process of Korean situational demonstratives. For this purpose, Chinese learners` use of Korean situational demonstratives is examined in two ways: we first examined the difference between Chinese learners` and Korean native speakers` use of Korean situational demonstratives. Secondly, we examined Chinese learners` acquisition process based on their level of Korean language proficiency, beginner, intermediate and advanced. The following is the result of this study: we first found the acquisition process of Chinese learners is different from that of Korean native speakers. If the referent is in the domain of speakers, Chinese learners` use of Korean situational demonstratives is similar to that of Korean native speakers. On the other hand, if the referent is in the domain of hearers or speaker-hearers, Chinese learners have much difficulty in using Korean situational demonstrative and their use is quite different from that of Korean native speakers. Secondly, we found Chinese learners differently used Korean situational demonstratives according to their language proficiency: in the context where objective and subjective judgement is at the same time possible, Chinese learners showed the different use of Korean situational demonstratives based on their proficiency. This study could contribute to a clarification of foreign learners` acquisition process of Korean situational demonstratives which has not drawn attention in Korean language education. The purpose of this study is to analyse Korean language learners` interlanguage development of topic-prominent characteristics focused on subject ellipsis, topic markers ``un/nun``, and double-nominative construction from the perspective of the type of language and to investigate whether the result supports language transfer or universal grammar. To conduct an experiment, the learner`s writing materials were collected from beginning learners under six months and advanced learners over eighteen months who came from China and America, and ten Korean native speakers. They watched a silent film named "Mr. Bean", then wrote a story about the film. As a conclusion, the result showed that subject ellipsis, topic markers ``un/nun``, and double-nominative construction appeared as same with native Korean speakers in spite of learners` native language and the spending time of learning Korean. This study also found out that learners showed strong use of topic prominent characteristics no matter their native language at the early stage of development. These results support the view of universal grammar. (Kyunghee University)
