Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of traumatic experiences, posttraumatic stress symptoms and mental health-related characteristics in young adults and identify relationships among the variables. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, data were collected through a Web-based survey (N=568). Structured instruments included valid measures of traumatic experiences, posttraumatic stress symptoms, depression, somatization symptoms, insomnia, and alcohol use. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, x2 tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS statistics 23. Results: Among study participants, 76.8% reported traumatic experiences. The severity of trauma was associated with high levels of posttraumatic stress symptoms, depression, somatization symptoms, insomnia, and alcohol use. Women showed more severe posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms than men. There were positive correlations for trauma experiences with posttraumatic stress symptoms, depression, somatization symptoms, and insomnia. Conclusion: Findings indicate the need to develop nursing intervention programs to relieve posttraumatic stress symptoms and improve mental health related characteristics targeting young adults, and to establish a national policy that addresses characteristics of trauma experienced in Korea.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a group counseling program using neurolinguistic programming (NLP) for individuals abusing alcohol. Methods: In a quasi-experimental study, 48 participants were recruited from five alcohol medical centers. The NLP group counseling program was provided to the experimental group for 90 minute sessions twice a week for 5 weeks. Pre-post data were collected from November, 2014 to April, 2015. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, and independent t-tests. Results: Compared with the control group, participants in the experimental group showed significantly decreasing scores for depression (t=-2.19, p=.033) and alcohol craving (t=-3.59, p=.001). Participants in the experimental group also showed improved self-efficacy related to drinking refusal (t=3.05, p=.004). Conclusion: Study findings support using the NLP group counseling program with patients abusing alcohol as it is effective in improving depression, drinking refusal self-efficacy, and craving. Therefore, the NLP group counseling program is a useful nursing intervention to prevent relapse in alcoholics.

Methods: In-depth interview were done using semi-structured questionnaire with 25 men nursing students taking clinical practice. Data were analyzed using grounded theory. Results: Core category of coping experience of these nursing students was ‘a rolling stone’. Students’ coping strategies were ‘women centered environment’, ‘physical difficulty’, ‘lack of sufficient role models’, and ‘age related’. Helping components for their coping behaviors were ‘individual characteristics’, ‘attitude to men nursing student’, ‘one’s vision of nursing’, and ‘gender equality in nursing culture’. The consequence of this phenomenon were ‘a sense of belonging’, ‘building gender free nursing identity’, ‘nursing pride acquisition’ and ‘dream of nursing expert’. Conclusion: Men nursing students emphasized ‘growing as a mature nursing student’ in clinical practice.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate a ‘patient empowerment program for schizophrenia (PEPS)’ to improve problem solving ability, quality of life, and mental health literacy for hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. Methods: The study was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Study participants were recruited from a psychiatric hospital in Republic of Korea. Of 56 participants, 20 were assigned to the experimental group and 36 to the control group. Data were collected from September, 2017 to January, 2018. Data analyses included chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests, t-tests, and repeated measure ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: After participating PEPS, the experimental group showed a significant increase in quality of life and mental health literacy compared to the control group. However, there were no significant differences in problem solving ability between the two groups. Conclusion: Findings show that patients with schizophrenia receive benefits from PEPS in terms of quality of life and mental health literacy. However, further research is necessary to develop clinical strategies to improve their problem solving abilities.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine factors influencing depression and suicide attempts among South Korean adolescent victims of violence. Methods: This secondary data analysis was based on the 11th (2015) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based survey. The study sample comprised of 1,565 students who were victims of violence and subsequently required medical treatment during the past 12 months. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses were completed. Results: Factors associated with adolescent depression due to violence were residence type, perceived happiness, sleep satisfaction, perceived stress, perceived health, gender, lifetime smoking habits, number of violent experiences, and lifetime alcohol consumption habits. Factors associated with adolescent suicide attempts were perceived health, residence type, number of violent experiences, lifetime smoking habits, and gender. Conclusion: Our study findings show that different factors affect depression and suicide attempts among Korean juvenile victims of violence. Therefore, considering these factors, it is necessary to prepare intervention strategies that include family-centered support systems, improvement in coping ability of the individual and counselors who have experience with juvenile victims of violence.

Purpose: This phenomenological study was done to explore in-depth understanding of the lived experience of primary caregivers of people with mental illness. Methods: Participants were 7 primary caregivers and data were collected from November 2017 to February 2018. Giorgi's phenomenological method was used in this study. The caregiving experiences were categorized into separate types of situational structures in terms of specific and general descriptions. Results: Six clusters and fourteen sub-clusters were identified. The 6 clusters were found to be ‘Embarrassing encounter with a disease’, ‘Sustained regret and self-defeating’, ‘Family life of constant oppression’, ‘Confinement of a mental illness’, ‘Nagging label of mental illness’, and ‘Recognizing the disease as a fate and taking courage’. Conclusion: The study findings emphasize the importance of both local and national support and the provision of information designed for primary caregivers of people with mental disability. Psychiatric nurses should understand and consider the growing number of increasing social prejudices, stigma, and caregiver burden so as to improve interpersonal relationships brought about by mental illness.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review intervention programs designed to promote mental health in multicultural children and adolescents living in Korea. Methods: A systematic search with key words in Korean and English was conducted using 9 electronic databases. Twelve studies were included in the sample for systematic review and the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Study (MINORS) was used to assess methodological rigor and quality of scientific evidence. Results: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were used in 3 and quasi-experimental designs in nine studies. Interventions utilizing art therapy were found to be effective in improving school adjustment in these children, and in decreasing levels of depression and anxiety. Learning activities and self-image were not found to be effective. In all 12 studies discussion of the theory guiding the intervention was not included and all 12 studies were rated as having a high risk of bias based on MINORS criteria. Conclusion: Findings provide a basis for developing intervention programs to improve mental health in multicultural children and adolescents. Core strategies for promoting mental health in these children and adolescents include access to age and situational characteristics. For intervention effects, development of programs to improve self-esteem and resilience is important.

Purpose: This study was done to identify and prioritize educational needs for suicide prevention competencies among 212 visiting nurses from 33 public health centers. Methods: Data were collected from August to October 2017 through self-administered questionnaires consisting of measures of suicide prevention competencies. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and Borich's needs assessment model to determine the priority of educational needs. Results: Visiting nurses reported that enhancing skills in suicide prevention were more significant than improving knowledge. The highest priority need was “utilizing counseling skills.” In addition, other educational needs were prioritized as followed by; “a strategic planning approach to suicide prevention”, “applying therapeutic communication”, “showing empathy”, and “using resources in the community.” Conclusion: The findings suggest that developing intervention programs to enhance counseling and strategic planning skills are needed to improve suicide prevention competencies among visiting nurses.

Purpose: This study aimed to (1) explore current levels of quality of life, depression, resilience and social support and (2) investigate factors associated with quality of life among parents who lost children in the Sewol ferry disaster. Methods: Data for this descriptive and correlation study was collected from December 2016 to June 2017. Structured questionnaires were completed by 114 parents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multivariate linear regression. Results: Lower levels of quality of life were reported by parents with no current occupation, who considered emotional support by others as not helpful, not disclosing self as family of a victim, experiencing change in social activities related to the disaster, and not participating in bereavement activities with other families (all p values <.05). Factors associated with quality of life were depression (β=-.53) and resilience (β=.26) and explained 48.0% variance (F=50.37, p<.001), while social support was not a significant factor. Conclusion: Our study findings provide fundamental information on the mental health status of families of the Sewol ferry disaster victims. Nursing interventions to improve quality of life of parents who lost their children in the disaster should emphasize both managing depression and improving resilience.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify effects of a psychiatric and mental health nursing class to improve knowledge about schizophrenia, attitudes toward mental illness, and learning satisfaction after using an illness narrative of a patient with schizophrenia. Methods: This study was in nonequivalent control group and a pretest-posttest design. Of the 88 nursing students, the 34 in the experimental group received 5 hours of lectures on schizophrenia plus 2 hours of learning using a patient's illness narrative. The control group (n=54) received only the 5 hours of lectures on schizophrenia. During September, 2017, an online survey was used to collect data before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests with SPSS Statistics version 22.0. Results: There were no differences for knowledge on schizophrenia or for attitudes toward mental illness between the experimental group and the control group after the intervention. However, learning satisfaction was significantly higher in the experimental group compared to the control group (Z=-2.18, p=.029). Conclusion: Findings indicate that patient illness narratives could be a useful tool to improve learning satisfaction in nursing students. Therefore, using patient illness narratives in nursing classes is recommended.
