Purpose: This aim of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of interpersonal relations on the association between emotional intelligence and happiness of nursing students. Methods: Both junior and senior nursing students were selected for this study (N=187). The survey was conducted using self-reported questionnaire between March and May, 2018. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis with Sobel test. Results: The happiness of nursing students had positive correlation with emotional intelligence (r=.70, p<.01) and interpersonal relations (r=.60, p<.01). Emotional intelligence had positive correlation with interpersonal relations (r=.63, p<.01). Interpersonal relations had a partially mediating effect on the relationship between emotional intelligence and happiness of nursing students. Conclusion: According to this study, interpersonal relations played an important role to buffer the impact of emotional intelligence on happiness among nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a psychological program to improve interpersonal relations to enhance the happiness of nursing students.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of alexithmia on the relationship between attachment and depression in early adulthood. Methods: A convenience sample of 260 young adults responded to the survey. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and path analyses using bootstrapping. Results: The path analysis indicated that anxious attachment and alexithymia was positively related to depression, but there was not a significant relationship between avoidant attachment and depression. In a modified path model, alexithymia mediated the positive effects of anxious attachment and avoidant attachment on depression. Conclusion: Our study findings suggest that early adults who have insecure attachments are vulnerable to alexithymia and depression. Targeted interventions to improve emotional expressive ability may reduce depression in early adulthood.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the association of multiple addiction risks with life satisfaction, depression, and suicidal ideation in Korean adults. Methods: This study was descriptive correlational. Data were collected in 800 adults (405 males, 395 females) aged 20 to 69 years recruited using the proportional allocation in a city on April 2017. The structured questionnaire consisted of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, the Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for adults, the Problem Gambling Severity Index, the Drug Screening Inventory, the Korean version of the Satisfaction with the Life Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and the Scale for Suicidal Ideation. Results: Adults with multiple addiction risks had a low level of life satisfaction (p=.003) and high levels of depression and suicidal ideation (p<.001) compared to other participants. Multiple addiction risks were associated with low life satisfaction (β=.12), high depression (β=.21), and suicidal ideation (β=.20). Significant factors of life satisfaction were low suicidal ideation, a simple functioning job, high level of education, and unemployment status. Conclusion: Multiple addiction risks are associated with life satisfaction, depression, and suicidal ideation. The comprehensive mental health assessment for multiple addictions should precede the development of preventive multidimensional interventions.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between violence experiences and violence responses of psychiatric nurses. Methods: In this descriptive study, 211 psychiatric nurses were recruited from twelve psychiatric hospitals. A structured self-report questionnaire was used to measure the study variables. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and a series of multiple linear regression analyses based on Baron and Kenny’s method with the SPSS 24.0 program. Results: Violence responses positively correlated with violence experiences (r=.15, p=.031), but negatively correlated with social support (r=-.25, p<.001). Social support was a significant variable on violence responses (β=-.26, p<.001). Social support did not moderate effect (β=-.06, p=.377). However family support was significant in controlling emotional responses to psychiatric nurses’ experience of verbal violence (β= -.15, p=.027). Friends support was significant in controlling social responses to psychiatric nurses experienced verbal violence (β=-.14, p=.041). Conclusion: Our study findings indicate a need to provide social support for preventing and alleviating violence responses of psychiatric nurses.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to translate Tromsø Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS) into Korean and verify the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the TSIS. Methods: This study used a methodological research design. Exploratory factor analysis, content, construct, criterion-related validity, and internal consistency reliability of the TSIS were evaluated. Participants, 269 nursing students, were recruited from three universities in three provinces in South Korea from November 2016 to April 2017. Results: The Korean version of TSIS contained 16 items. Exploratory factor analysis showed three factors that explained the construct validity with a three-factor solution; that explained 61.3% of the total variance. Concurrent validity was associated with the Global Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (r=.68, p<.001). Cronbach's α for the 16 items was .80. Conclusion: Our study findings suggest that the Korean version of TSIS was a valid and reliable scale with a robust factorial structure and useful for measuring social intelligence of nursing students.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a structural model based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecology of human development theory, that illustrates relationships of happiness and associated factors among Korean college students. Methods: Study participants were 357 college students recruited from five universities throughout the convenience sampling. Self-reported data were collected from November, 2018 to January, 2019. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and a structural equation modeling in order to identify factors associated with college students' happiness. Results: The tested model demonstrated the acceptable model fit compared to the hypothesized model, that explained college students’ happiness with 68.7% accuracy. Positive family function, high self esteem and ego-resilience were significant factors associated with happiness for college students. However, positive friend support was not significant in our model. Conclusion: Our study findings suggest that both family and individual interventions are required to reduce negative emotions and increase happiness of college students. In particular, multicomponent interventions should include the concepts of self esteem, ego-resilience, and family function in terms of assessment and intervention contents tailored to Korean college students.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review intervention programs for experienced nurses’ job stress and mental health. Methods: Searches of literature were conducted through four electronic databases (RISS, KISS, PubMed, and CINAHL), focusing on the recent 5-year publications in English or Korean. Thirteen studies were selected for the final analysis and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network checklist was used to assess methodological rigor and quality. Results: Randomized controlled trials were used in five studies and quasi-experimental designs in eight studies. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and group approach were the most frequent types of interventions in six and nine studies respectively. On average, the intervention was required for eight weeks and 60~120 minutes per session. After evaluating the effects of CBT, complementary alternative therapy, informative training, simulation training and stimuli control, most of the tested interventions reduced experienced nurses’ job stress and improved mental health, but informative training did not. Conclusion: Despite the obvious importance of experienced nurses in quality of nursing care, it has not been well studied due to limited numbers of studies with less rigorous design. Study findings provide a basis for developing intervention programs to reduce job stress and improve mental health for experienced nurses.
