Purpose: This study aims to investigate gender differences in the association between depressive symptoms and weight, weight perception, and body satisfaction among Korean adolescents. Methods: A secondary data analysis was performed on data from 33,374 adolescents who participated in the 2015 Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey. They were classified as underweight, normal weight, or overweight/obese; weight perception was classified into perception of being underweight, normal weight, or overweight/obese; and weight satisfaction into desire to gain weight, satisfied, and desire to lose weight. Results: Among boys, perception of being underweight (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07~1.35) and desire to gain weight (AOR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.30~1.62) were associated with depression. Among girls, perception of being overweight or obese (AOR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.07~ 1.29) and a desire to lose weight (AOR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.18~1.42) were associated with depression. Conclusion: Gender differences were observed in the association between weight perception and depression in adolescents. The perception of being underweight among boys and the perception of being overweight/overweight among girls were associated with depression. Thus, gender-specific intervention programs to correct weight perception and weight satisfaction are needed in order to relieve depressive symptoms in adolescents.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean Version of the Nurses’ Self-Concept Instrument (NSCI) geriatric hospital nurses in Korea. Methods: Bilingual nursing professionals performed translation and back-translation. Reliability and validity of the content and construction of the instrument were confirmed. Internal consistency reliability was determined. Construction and concurrent validity were verified using fac-tor analysis and correlation coefficients. Results: The total 14 items for the Korean version of the Nurses’ Self-Concept Instrument (NSCI) were retained through item analysis. In explanatory factor analysis, four subcategories were pro-posed with their names of each factor: ‘Leadership’, ‘Staff relation’, ‘Knowledge’, and ‘Care’. The four factors accounted for 78.81% of the variances. The Cronbach’s α regarding internal consistency were .77~.91 for the NSCI subscales. Correlation among four subcategories ranged .62~.84. Conclusion: The findings show that the Korean version of the Nurses’ Self-Concept Instrument is reliable and valid for measuring professional Self-Concept of geriatric hospital nurses in Korea.

Purpose: This study aims to examine the relationships among social discrimination, subjective health, and personal satisfaction based on the country of origin. Methods: The analysis was based on 16,958 immigrants who participated in the National Survey of Multicultural Family 2015 in Korea. This study conducted stratified cross-analysis of social discrimination for the differences in subjective health and personal satisfaction. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the relationships among social discrimination, subjective health, and personal satisfaction were examined with multivariable logistic regression. Results: There were differences in experience of social discrim-ination, subjective health status, and personal satisfaction according to the country of origin. Groups without the experi-ence of social discrimination had better subjective health and personal satisfaction than the other groups. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that a discrimination prevention program needs to be developed based on a cultural approach.

Social support was measured with the MOS-SSS (Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey), self-esteem with Self-Esteem Scale, hope with the Nowotny Hope Scale, and health conservation with the Sung’s Health Conservation Scale. IBM SPSS 20.0 was used to analyze descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Factors affecting the health conservation of the vulnerable elderly people were social support, hope, education level and subjective health status. These factors explained 64.9% of the health conservation. Purpose: Competency is a key foundation of the nursing education curriculum and a baseline element of nursing practice. The purpose of this study was to explore the competencies of community health nurses in a maternal early childhood sustained home-visiting program based on nurses’ field experiences. Methods: The participants were 21 nurses who had more than 1 year of experience in this program. Reflective interviews were performed; lasting 1 hour per nurse, on August 18, 2016, and the collected data were analyzed using qualitative directed content analysis. Results: Twenty-four themes were extracted for 9 competencies. The major themes included implementing a long-term relationship-based approach, providing client-led service rather than expert-led service, helping mothers with psychosocial difficulties, and applying skills in a practical manner in the home environment. Conclusion: In order to develop a home-visiting program as part of maternal-early childhood nursing practice, nurses should develop com-petencies that help them make significant and positive interventions. Results indicate that the curriculum for commun-ity health nurses should be changed to improve competencies in building relationships with clients and to focus on the application of skills in specific cases and in clinical practice.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of an intervention of self-feeding for elderly residents who were eating with assistance or eating by himself/herself with spilling food. Methods: The Participants were 11 elderly people and 6 formal caregivers from 7 nursing homes in Korea. The intervention was to use the spoon and chopstick sets designed for compensating the weakened eating function. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through observation, structured questions, and in-depth interviews. Results: The mealtime was significantly increased by 3.2 minutes (p=.011) after the intervention. Three themes were extracted for the meaning of self-feeding expressed by the elders; fighting alone for self-feeding, pride of participating in the study, and burden for self-feeding and research participation. Caregivers expressed the meaning of the elder’s self-feeding such as the regret of missed chances, facilitating rehabilitation, the increase of the eating pleasure and quality of care, and ambivalence. Conclusion: Self-feeding has become an opportunity to recognize life values for the elders in nursing homes; for the caregivers, to reconsider caring of the elderly. Posture and eating utensils were also important to improve self-feeding skills.
