Purpose: This study was done to provide a basis for effective patient safety management activities and quality improvement by identifying the relationship among psychiatric nurses` perception of the healthcare accreditation system, safety climate and patient safety management activities. Methods: The study participants included 163 psychiatric nurses from 8 mental hospitals and data was collected using self-report questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 using mean, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Results: Main factors which affect patient safety management activities are education and organizational structure for accreditation, and the total career record. The explanatory power for patient safety management activities of these variables was 41%. Conclusion: Findings indicate that psychiatric institutions have to develop their own effective measures, work out plans to support administrative and financial nursing services, and continuously provide useful information and educational opportunities.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the suicide prevention programs for healthcare personnel to identify contents, formats, and strategies essential for effective suicide prevention programs. Methods: A systematic search using key words in English and Korean was conducted using 10 electronic databases, including EMBASE, MEDLINE, and RISS. Of 794 publications identified, 9 studies were finally included in this systematic review. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) was used for the quality assessment. Results: Of the nine experimental studies, seven studies used randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and two used quasi-experimental designs. Overall, suicide prevention programs were found to be effective in improving competencies (e.g., knowledge, communication skills, and attitudes) of healthcare personnel working in diverse settings. Limitations of these studies included a lack of rigorous research designs and reliable and universal outcome measures. Paradoxically, none of the studies were conducted in South Korea, which consistently has the highest suicide rate of all OECD countries. Conclusion: Suicide prevention programs for health personnel can be an effective way to improve competency of healthcare personnel in preventing suicide. These findings will serve as a foundation for the development of suicide prevention programs by Korean healthcare personnel.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction on burnout in psychiatric nurses and the moderating effects of social support. Methods: The participants were 214 psychiatric nurses from G city & C, G, J province. Data were collected from October 23 to November 6, 2015 and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, multiple regression analysis and moderated regression analysis. Results: Secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction had significant influence on burnout in psychiatric nurses. The explained variance for burnout was 67%. However, social support did not moderate the effect of secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction on burnout. Conclusion: Findings indicate that burnout in psychiatric nurses may have a direct influence on their nursing services. There is a need to provide nursing intervention programs in order to prevent and alleviate burnout in psychiatric nurses by decreasing secondary traumatic stress and increasing compassion satisfaction.

Purpose: This study was performed to identify the impact of self-leadership and organizational commitment on intention among psychiatric mental health nurses to remain in the profession. Methods: For this descriptive correlational study, participants were 177 psychiatric mental health nurses with more .than 3 months of psychiatric mental health experience, working in one of eight hospitals in four areas. Data were collected from December 21, 2015 to February 22, 2016 using self-report questionnaires and were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson`s correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with IBM SPSS 19.0. Results: Self-leadership and organizational commitment correlated positively with intention to remain. According to the analysis of the impact of self-leadership and organizational commitment on intention to remain, organizational commitment was the most significant predictor variable. Conclusion: Study findings suggest that improvement in the organizational commitment of psychiatric mental health nurses increases their intention remain. It is necessary to come up with a strategy which strengthens organizational commitment in order to improve psychiatric mental health nurses` intention to remain in the profession.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore ethical problems that cause moral distress in nurses and affects the quality of care provided by community mental health nurses working in community mental health settings. Methods: Three focus group interviews were held with 14 nurses working in 3 community mental health centers in Korea. Qualitative descriptive methods and qualitative content analysis were used. Results: Data analysis found 5 domains (decision making, communication, resources, safety, advocacy), 9 categories (personal information sharing issues, ethical insensibility, collisions between principles and practice, institutions unprepared in ethical problems, ethical dilemma in interactions with clients, problems with the evaluation system, problems with the budget structure, problems with the lack of safety measure, and problems with role limitation as a professional) and 11 subcategories. Conclusion: Results of this study suggest a) a need for further research on identifying ethical conflicts arising in community mental health fields, and b) on what nurses actually do when they deal with ethical conflicts, c) efforts to develop ethics support programs such as ethics education, training and reflection meetings to enhance nurses` ethical sensitivity, d) consideration of a supportive environment and culture that prioritizes ethical concerns in practitioners as well as administrators.
