본고는 임진왜란시 의승군(義僧軍)의 봉기와 전란의 충격이라는 주제로 살펴본 연구이다. 임진란이 발발하자 처음으로 의승군으로 활동한 고승은 청허휴정의 제자 영규로 중봉조헌과 금산전투에 참여하여 유격전을 펼치다가 장렬히 순국하였다. 그 무렵 선조의 요청으로 의승군 봉기를 하게 된 청허휴정은 전국 8도에 격문을 돌려 의승군이 봉기하게 된다. 그 뿐만 아니라 그의 상수제자 사명유정(四溟惟政)을 비롯한 그의 문도들과, 청허휴정의 도반인 부휴선수와 문도들도 의승군의 유격전에 참전하였다. 이들은 분조의 임무를 맡은 세자 광해군의 통솔을 받았다. 임진왜란시 참상은 말로 형언할 수 없을 정도였으며 문화적 충격도 컸을 것이다. 예컨대 일본 침략군의 주력을 이룬 장수는 고니시 유키나가(소서행장(小西行長))과 가토 기요마사(가등청정(加藤淸正))이었다. 고니시 유키나는 천주교신자 아우구스띠누스(Augustinus)로서 최초로 한국의 땅을 밟은 스페인 세스페데스(Gregorio de Cespedes)신부를 대동하였다. 가토 기요마사는 불교신자로 일본승려 겐소(玄蘇)를 휘하에 두었다. 겐소는 제국주의적 불교적 성향의 인물이었으며, 승려 닛신(日眞)도 역시 일본 제국주의적 교리를 담고 있는 법화종계(法華宗系) 일련종(日蓮宗) 승려였다. 그리고 전란중의 흑인의 등장은 ‘해귀(海鬼)’라고 기록되어 있듯이, 당시 사회에 적지 않은 영향을 끼쳤을 것이다.

This paper is a study conducted on the theme of ``The Uprising of Euiseung-gun and the Impacts of the Imjin War``. Just as soon as the War with the Japanese in the Imjin year (the Year of Dragon) (hereafter referred to as Imjin War) broke out, Yeonggyu, a high priest who actively served as Euiseung-gun (Buddhist monk volunteer) and also a student of Cheongheo-Hyujeong (also known as the Buddhist master Seosan), heroically died for the country while initiating a guerrilla war. Yeonggyu participated in the war with General Jungbong Joheon in the Geumsan battle. In those days, at the request of King Seonjo, Cheongheo-Hyujeong decided to bring forth a revolt against the Euiseung-gun; the manifesto was delivered all over the Eight Provinces in the nation. As a result, the Euiseung-gun also fought back. Furthermore, Samyeong`s disciples, including Buddhist master Samyeong Yujeong, who was the best student of Seosan, and Buhyu Seonsu, who was Cheongheo-Hyujeong`s friend and Seonsu`s companion also engaged in warfare. They were presided over by Crown Prince Gwanghaegun who undertook the mission of the partial government. The horrors of the Imjin War were so bad it almost defies the description and the culture shock experienced by many. For example, the commander who created the main force of the Japanese invading army was Gonisi Yukinaga (小西行長) and Gato Giyomasa (加藤淸正). Gonisi Yukinaga was a Roman Catholic Augustinian; he was accompanied by Catholic Priest Cespedes from Spain who first set foot on Korean soil. Gato Giyomasa(加藤淸正) had Genso, a Japanese Monk, under his command as a believer in Buddhism. Genso(玄蘇) was a person with Imperialistic Buddhist tendency. Monk Nitssin (日眞) was also a Buddhist monk belong to the Beophwajong (法華宗) system Ilyeonjong (日蓮宗), which held the Japanese imperialist doctrine. Also at that time, the Imjin War had immense influence on the society and culture, considering that a person of African descent appeared during the war as Davy Jones (海鬼).
