본 연구는 바르트의 의미작용 모델로 포스트모던 그림책의 의미작용 과정을 살펴보았다. 포스트모던 그림책은 기존의 관습을 전복하려는 특성을 지니고 있다. 따라서 글과 그림이 상호작용하는 것을 넘어서, 그 심층의 의미작용을 살펴보고 탐구할 필요가 있다. 포스트모던 그림책에서 함축적 의미작용을 살펴볼 수 있는 분석 도구로 바르트의 의미작용 모델에 주목하였다. 바르트의 의미작용 모델은 기호의 의미 작용을 외시적 의미와 함축적 의미로 나누어 분석한다. 이를 활용하여 포스트모던 그림책의 특성을 반영한 의미작용 과정을 파악할 수 있었다. 포스트모던 그림책 중에서 『검정과 하양』과 『냄새 고약한 치즈맨과 멍청한 이야기들』의 의미작용 과정을 살펴보았다. 이 그림책에서 글과 그림은 기존의 관습으로 해석되지 않는다. 그렇기 때문에 독자는 기존의 관습에 위반되는 글과 그림을 통해 인위적 신화를 구성한다. 새롭게 구축된 인위적 신화는 그림책을 재해석할 수 있는 의미작용을 한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 독자는 포스트모던 그림책을 읽는 즐거움을 발견할 수 있다.

This study examined the signification of postmodern picturebooks. Postmodern picturebooks have the characteristic of overturning existing customs. Therefore, beyond the interaction of text and pictures, it is necessary to explore the deep signification. This study presents Barthes's signification model as an analytical tool to investigate depth semantics. Barthes's signification model divides the semantics of symbols into extrinsic and implicit semantics. This is appropriate to understand the meaning of the postmodern picture book reflecting characteristics. We analyzed the significations of postmodern picturebooks "black and white" and "The Stinky Cheese Man: And Other Fairly Stupid Tales". These picturebooks lead us to construct artificial myths through writings and pictures that violate conventional customs. The newly constructed anthropomorphic myth has a meaning to reinterpret picture books. Through this process, readers can discover the pleasure of reading postmodern picture books.
