this study, we aim to construct a database for Japanese language education based on the “interactive method of classifying and analyzing lexical items” with special reference to adverbs and the method of teaching synonymous adverbs in Japanese as part of Japanese vocabulary teaching. The “interactive method of classifying and analyzing lexical items” is the term proposed in the present study; it means ‘bi『lateral, dialogue』based,’ as reflected in inter ‘among, between’ and active ‘active.’ The learners and the teacher interacted with each other, and I constructed a database for Japanese language teaching based on the proposed method with special reference to the adverbs which a number of learners want to study. This teaching method and practice enable the learners to extend the meanings/usages of their targeted adverbs, and they are utilized to analyze and classify the adverbs of the same level in accordance with Japanese Language Proficiency Test, synonymous adverbs, various conditions on the meanings/usages of these adverbs, and Korean adverbial expressions. In the previous literature, relatively little attention has been paid to adverbs in general, compared with verbs, and adverbs have been analyzed to serve as exceptional conditions on the meaning of a sentence or as additional materials to the sentence. There has recently been a growing body of work on temporal adverbs and synonymous adverbs from various points of view, concerning grammatical research, semantic research, research on Japanese language education, cognitive linguistic research, research on Korean『Japanese contrastive linguistic, and corpus』 based research on vocabulary. Still, the objects of these inquiries are rather limited. In the present work, I apply the “interactive method of classifying and analyzing lexical items” to yatto, an adverb which is taught in the early stage of Japanese language teaching and which is especially frequently used among the adverbs appearing in JLPT and JPT exam papers, and contrast it with its synonymous adverbs youyaku, tsuini, and toutou. Through this practice, I constructed a database for Japanese vocabulary education based on spontaneous examples of adverbs, and set out the method of teaching synonymous adverbs in Japanese.
